Retaliation against a pacifist community? lol....That seems bizarre... But as we have learned around here, there are all kinds of people out there.

I have to assume that the Border Patrol was notified immediately since it is only 10-15 minutes from the border.

Many in the community do not like the Amish because of the buggies on the road and the manure. The buggies have been involved in many accidents and some view them as a hazard on the roads. There is also resentment by some because the Amish are "protected" and do not always have the same laws as the rest of the community. I personally have no issue with the Amish and enjoy having them here.

If an Amish teen/young adult chooses to" become English" (non-Amish) the parents are not happy, but most will accept their child's decision. The plainer Amish orders (yes, some Amish are stricter than others) will still shun people. Shunning occurs when the person is baptized in the Amish faith, then leaves the faith after they have been baptized. Persons who were never baptized in the Amish faith and they then choose to leave are not shunned. There is an excellent weblog about the Amish-here is the link : http://amishamerica.com/ . The Amish, along with the Mennonites and Hutterites, are Anabaptist. The girls are of the Schwarzentruber order, one of the plainest.

It is not unusual for the Amish to set up a roadside stand outside the family home to sell produce, fruit, eggs, honey and other items.

I am praying that both girls will be found safe. Just MOO, but the Amber alert should probably be extended to PA as well.

St. Lawrence County Undersheriff Scott Bonno says, “A tarp has been laid at scene to protect potential evidence at what is believed to be a crime scene.”

According to Bonno, the witness is a neighbor who says he saw a what he believed to be a white, four-door sedan interacting with the children at the vegetable stand. The witness did not see the car pull up, but Bonno says the witness did see it just as it was about to leave.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are working the case, as many as 7 Bonno believes, and he says the F.B.I. does have an agent getting involved.

Bonno says nearly 50 officers were involved in the overnight search.

The overnight search included road blockades in Ogdensburg, Gouverneur, Potsdam and Jefferson County, according to Bonno.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells says the girls speak Pennsylvania Dutch, and one of the girls speaks English

It is such a shame there are no photos to release of the girls, in their description, if their clothes and bonnets are removed, they will not Stand out as much, although FM is reportedly cross eyed, that's the only thing that would be obvious.

The family and whole community must be beside themselves with worry.
The witness who said a passenger got out the car and was seen putting something in the back of the car, I wonder if it appeared like a struggle.
Is it routine for the two girls to attend the stall alone without an adult?
I really hope there's some news soon x

The other thing I think would be obvious/hard to conceal is the fact that one of the girls (the 6 year old) has a scar on her forehead and missing front teeth.

It sounds to me that the family was there, but had went into a nearby barn to milk a cow (or something like that?) and when they returned the girls were gone. I don't think it's routine that they are left completely alone out there.

Besides their clothing, another thing that will make these two girls stand out is that they will not be speaking English... from the above, only one (presumably the oldest) speaks English, their customary language is Pennsylvania Dutch.

These girls are probably taught to respect elders - which in their case would be any adult. Also, they are non-violent / pacifist as well. Unfortunately, that could mean that even if they were in trouble they might not fight back / struggle / scream / run away. So scary!

I see Amish children outside alone all of the time. They are usually very friendly and wave when I pass by them.

I once saw a boy, who could not have been over 4yo, all alone out in a field sitting on a stool milking a cow.

Even though one speaks English there will likely be a heavy accent.

Yes, it was said only one girl speaks English. I really hope it is someone that knows them and believes they are saving the girls, for whatever reason. I know very little about the Amish community, do they welcome outsiders into their community or do they keep themselves to themselves? X

IME the Amish in this area interact with our communities regularly. I doubt that they would invite you over for dinner but they do interact at stores, the post office, etc.

They would only interact where needed, banking, grocery store, etc. Most would only work for others within the Amish community, they wouldn't "hang out" with "outsiders" unnecessarily.

Very interesting, thank you. Besides FM's crossed eyes there is nothing identifiable about the girls. Minus the aprons and bonnets, of course.

I am just jumping on this thread...

saw it first on the scanner thread...

IIRC... The other girl has a round scar on her forehead...

someone correct me if I am incorrect...

TIA...:seeya:

People are allowed to leave the amish though, they even have rumspringer sp? where the teens go and live like non amish and try forbidden things like movies and electricity etc. Then they have to choose to come back to the amish church and way of life. If they choose not to they are shunned i think, or at least they no longer live with families etc. but it isn't something terrible that they are forced to live forever
I grew up in Amish country in Ohio. R-sp is not for this age group. They were milking cows and went to the road side stand to help someone who stopped by. As for forcing to be Amish... these are small kids that are not even to the age where they get to decide that. These are small kids. Also R-sp does not always include them leaving. It is a time where they are allowed to make a choice and explore their options. Again, these are two small children that are not in that age bracket in my experience growing up my entire life in this community.

So scary for these two girls and then not to have any pictures makes it worse. Praying that they are found and unharmed.

I visit the community/area these girls are from on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. In this specific community they may not be welcoming in terms of homes-I really don't know- but they are friendly, and will talk to others at stores, and make conversation, outside of regular chatter. For ex. I spend quite a bit of time at the local Joannes in Ogdensburg, almost every time I am there there are Amish women in the store shopping for various fabrics.I have had numerous conversations with the adults/mothers as well as their young kids.

The young kids/teens do also run roadside stands alone.

I find the local community tends to be split on the Amish, theres not much middle ground, it's either anger/rage or just a "live and let live" attitude. I don't know if that is common everywhere, or just in this area though.
