Two Amish sisters were abducted from their roadside farm stand near New York's border with Canada and a massive hunt to find them was under way on Thursday, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office said.

Dozens of law enforcement officers, including U.S. Border Patrol agents and New York State Park Police, and volunteer firefighters manned road-checks and canvassed motorists after the girls vanished at 7:20 p.m Wednesday from their vegetable stand off Mount Alone Road in Oswegatchie, about 10 miles from the Canada border, Sheriff's Deputy Shawn Wells said.

An Amber Alert was issued for the girls, who wore bonnets and aprons over dark blue dresses as their religion requires. They live in the rural area's Amish community and were identified as Fannie Miller, 12, and Delila Miller, 6.

Witnesses who flooded a police line with tips identified a white four-door sedan as a suspicious vehicle, a spokesman for the sheriff's department said.

"We've had a lot of reports of suspicious white vehicles but so far nothing has panned out," Deputy Wells said.

The Amish, who live throughout the United States, with the nation's largest community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, are known for their old world ways. Shunning electricity and other modern conveniences, they drive horse-drawn buggies.

OSWEGATCHIE, N.Y. Authorities are searching for two Amish girls they say may have abducted from a roadside stand near the Canadian border.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office says police patrols are out searching Thursday morning for 6-year-old Delila Miller and 12-year-old Fannie Miller.

Officials issued a special alert for the two girls after they were apparently abducted around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the rural town of Oswegatchie, 150 miles (240 kilometres) northwest of the New York State capital, Albany.

Police say the girls went to wait on a customer at the family's roadside stand.

A witness saw a passenger in a vehicle put something into the back seat, and when the vehicle drove off the children were gone.

Both girls were wearing dark blue dresses with blue aprons and black bonnets.

ok thank you

I want to clarify that by "rescue" I was not trying to disparage the Amish community. Just throwing out ideas and a kidnapping by a relative who left the community didn't sound far fetched to me. Like I said, my knowledge of the Amish comes solely from reality shows and books. Not a big Amish population here in California!

I meant no disrespect to their religion or values.

Are there any photos anywhere of the girls? Amber Alert without photos kind of defeats half the purpose of how to locate them :(

Hope they are found soon and safe, just being in a car is probably terrifying them. imo

I think you could be on to something here. Per a few documentaries I've watched, it's becoming more common for members of the Amish to leave their community. Once out, some of them will help others to leave the as well.

Also, another sad thought, but they might have been taken and thrown into a sex trafficking operation.

Perhaps *if* this is so, the abductors would get a premium for supplying such "innocent" and wholesome girls. :(

In NYS, they will not issue an amber alert if it is a biological parent who took the child. It becomes a "custody issue" and is referred to family courts. The police usually won't even write a report. Unless it violates an existing court order, and even then, it's not a criminal report. It just basically documents the "violation" of court order so it can be referred to in family court.

Just an FYI.

This is so scary because it's right near our summer house.

And yet no pictures of them anywhere. Will be hard to recognize them without photos :(

Er... I don't know why I quoted who I did. That was meant for who crystalina quoted. Sorry!

"Delila Miller has brown hair, brown eyes, weighs about 50 pounds and is roughly four feet tall. She has a round scar on her forehead and is missing front teeth.

Fannie Miller also has brown hair and brown eyes and is five feet tall and about 90 pounds. She is crosseyed.

Both of the girls have heavy accents and speak in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect, but the 12-year-old, Fannie, speaks English, SYR reported.

Sheriff Kevin Wells added that because of the time that passed since their disappearance, the girls may be wearing different clothing or have had their hair cut.

Oswegatchie is on the Canadian border 150 miles northwest of Albany.

Anyone with any information about the abduction is asked to call 911."

I'm sorry for my ignorance but do Amish allow photos to be taken? It certainly will make it harder for anyone to recognize them especially if the person that abducted them has changed their clothing.

I hope they're found soon and safe.

My god there are so many places these girls could have been taken. It's very rural up there. Where their farm was - it's off of 812- and if you take that straight into ogdensburg and turn left onto 37 headed south (which then turns into 12) - our house is right off rt. 12.

The good news is, since the amber alert was issued, the vehicle will be stopped at the border. I'm going to ask my mom to send me info if she has it. They are up there right now.

I don't believe they do, which makes this even tougher to locate them i'm afraid

Only one registered sex offender seems to be in area..
Have link, but not sure if appropriate for posting.

Wow, this is scary. Could the kidnapper (and I'm hoping!) be a parent or relative who left the Amish community? Wanted to "rescue" them?

This is my first guess. The alternative is all too familiar and horrifying :(
