"At the arraignment, which did not begin until 11:20 p.m., Justice Paul M. Lamson granted the two Miller girls and their mother an order of protection from the two suspects, and also an order for Ms. Vaisey from Mr. Howells. The judge told Mr. Howells that he should seek a private attorney, as his salary for his job at the Wound Healing Center of Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center would make him ineligible for a public defender. Ms. Vaisey works at the Bows and Bandanas Pet Salon and Resort, Potsdam.

During the arraignment, it was stated that Mr. Howells has three children, but does not have custody of them.

Brad Riendeau, attorney for Ms. Vaisey, said his client also was a victim of Mr. Howells. “I’m pointing the finger at him on her behalf,” he said after the arraignment."

"We were able to put this together quickly, which is surprising in itself'' I agree! It's actually a miracle these girls got away. Thank God these kidnappers left them alone for a bit . And thank God the girls were not afraid because I'm sure when they were left alone, they said something like ' dont leave or else' but they got away. Brave , smart girls ! ! !

Well, I get that abused women can be made to do lots of things, but when it comes to ' commit a crime that will net you life in prison', its' really time to throw that excuse out the window. Sorry, maybe that's just me, but I would not fear ANY man as much as I would fear life in prison.

She has a public defender (so got it right away); his job makes him ineligible for that--he's been instructed to get a private atty. Her atty is already pointing the finger at him saying she's been his victim as well.

“The girls are home, they were checked out at the hospital last night,” Rain said. “They are fine.”

The St. Lawerence County Sheriff's Office said in a statement late Friday that the couple's arrest “no doubt saved young children from future abuse.”

The Amish girls, 12-year-old FM and DM, 7, were “extremely” instrumental to finding the perps, Rain said.

Authorities are now trying to learn more about where the girls were kept during the 24 hours they were missing. Rain spoke from the couple’s home at 1380 County Route 21 in Hermon, where investigators were searching the house.

I wonder if they chose the girls because they thought it would be easier to get away with. They knew the family probably didn't have photos or telephones. They probably would have continued on with their plan if it wasn't all over the news. They were thinking nobody would be ever to find the girls due to the Amish lifestyle.

By ' intent to hurt' I guess we can surmise that no hurt took place . It almost never ends that way. These young ladies are so blessed.

Heart break ! I don't know why because we see this all the time on here, all the MF'ing time. But because of their closed and quiet society, I feel this was extra hard on them. You'll be ok, little ones.

Couldn't agree more. ESPECIALLY if that fact was not confirmed and they were making an assumption, which I highly suspect. I usually do not even watch CBS news because they suck, but it was on already when I turned on the TV this morning. I wonder if that fact was removed the next time the story came around.....

I've been thinking about the man that drove them home, and while I think some people will find it 'unorthodox', I understand it. I don't know how close his property was to the perps, but if he was a neighbor, and the perps said that they would be back soon, he may have not wanted to risk waiting for the police. Especially if they had weapons, etc. Maybe guns were mentioned and they just wanted to get the heck out of there. I know the police PROBABLY would have gotten there before the perps got home, but what if they didn't and the perps went to the neighbors house? What if there was a nasty confrontation or shots fired? Plus, there were police all over the girls' hometown, so it's not like it would be hard to find an officer once they got home.

In a situation where there are two dangerous, unpredictable people who could show up at any time, I would probably want to leave too. JMO, though. I mean the girls saw the perps, knew where they lived (so did the man who drove them), so I don't think he thought that they would suddenly point the finger at him as the perp .

Also, I think they gave them watermelon vs a cooked meal because it was quick. I think that they were trying to get the girls out of there ASAP. Being Amish, I'm sure that they don't really eat 'processed' foods, so watermelon may have been the most whole, quick, kid friendly food available.

I read on one articles that they passed the perp's car on the way home and ducked in the back seat, so they didn't have a whole lot of time apparently between leaving the neighbor's house and the perps returning.
