The scenario of a transient/homeless perp makes a lot of sense to me in terms of the MO. She was apparently killed by a rock, and it may have been a crime of random opportunity. But if so, it makes no sense that there is no DNA match popping up in the system. Vagrants/transients usually have been arrested a time or two and are in the system, in my experience. So I find that odd and it makes me rethink that part.

News reports have said she was strangled. There was speculation about her being hit by a rock and stunned but I don't think that has been verified.

As to DNA not popping up in the system unfortunately this is very common. Not everyone that has been arrested has DNA on file.

Could be a young homeless (or not homeless) person, not in the system yet.

I'm still leaning toward a young perp, though less strongly than I was before.

Cause of death was strangulation. The rock is just hearsay right now. Not confirmed.

How accurate is it on a map? I noticed it places her murder in Ozone park. Which is near Howard beach but not exactly close to her place of murder.

I read yesterday on Instagram, Karina's best friend commented on a mutal friends post that the award is still at $100,000 and the rest will go towards events, runs, and foundations. I'm not sure if this has changed. Because I do recall her Dad stating the reward is at $200,000 now.

$200,000 is a huge reward !

Most likely not connected, but Jamaica Estates is not too far from Howard Beach.

Edit: Hit reply too fast. I'm sure they collected his DNA in this case, how long does it take for it to be in system?

It's my understanding it can take some time for it to be put into the system. I believe someone posted here regarding CODIS and there being a backlog. I might be wrong so anyone can correct me.

In this case they may run it against the DNA they have from Karina rather quickly though. Seems to me like it's unrelated but you never know.

Hoping for some form of an update tomorrow since it will be 2 weeks since she lost her live. We haven't heard anything about the increase in reward money brining in more tips, no poi, nothing [emoji17]

Based on what I know from my stepsisters murder some DNA from rape cases can take years and years before they are entered into the system. Many states have serious back logs in their DNA programs and samples have been known to sit for years before finding their way into CODIS. Hopefully since this is in close proximity and because everyone is on high alert in that area they will try to cross match the DNA to see if there is a match.

Yes, I just saw that too and have been looking at the map. The major difference is the perp committed the crime in his home, not outdoors. Seems like he prefers to "order" his victim to be delivered to him rather than go out for one.

But maybe he's indoors because he's hiding injuries. IDK. I don't think it's the same perp....but worth adding to the list of theories.

Adding, this perp (the one caught today in a brutal rape, not connected to Karina as far as we know) has a record:

"A Queens man accused last year of raping a prostitute at knifepoint is now charged with the brutal rape of a 43-year-old woman — again at the end of a blade — in his home."

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york...aping-woman-knifepoint-home-article-1.2751936

Again, no known connection to Karina that we know of, other than he committed a brutal rape in his Queens home.

Absolutely. I wish I could remember the case, but there was a Dateline episode about a rapist and murderer who attacked another victim while his dna was backlogged from being entered. The victim's family was understandably very upset. Getting his dna into the system in a more timely manner could have saved her life.
I'll try to find it.

I did a quick Google search of CODIS backlog by state and didn't get what I was looking for. In the midst of getting my two crazy boys ready for an early bedtime but I plan on looking into this further because it's extremely concerning.

Obviously this backlog is a serious problem!

It's definitely a problem! I'm quite sure that the case I posted about is not the only one. It's really sad and frightening!

Why isn't this considered high priority? Why not hire more people to get caught up?
