A little bit too late now- but there are now NYPD surveillance cameras on 78th St in Howard Beach by Spring Creek Park.

Perhaps wishful thinking, but maybe he's bold enough to eventually return to the area to revisit the scene

This is unrelated, but an observation I made today. While walking to my office building this morning in the middle of 42nd Street, right across from Grand Central a man was sitting on the steps of a restaurant masturbating. Right out in the opened. Now I've lived in NY my whole life, worked in the city for many years, seen many crazy things but nothing like this. I was perplexed. There were many people walking by and saw the same thing I saw. The men either looked and looked back, or laughed. The women were disgusted and many of us moved to the side and called 911 or looked for a cop to wave down. The cops finally showed up and asked the man to stop and leave. What?!?! I thought something like this was illegal. Turns out that this wasn't the man's first time getting caught. Why wasn't he behind bars. He had his pants down, genitals out. Why was this okay? And if this isn't his first time, it won't be his last. What if he turns to a woman next and rapes her? I just don't get it. Society allows it..then someone in the end pays for it...like KV. SIGH.

OMG - I cannot believe they told him to simply move on.

I'm shocked too. I thought at least they will bring him in and fined. He was clearly a homeless man, but still. If he is told to move on and go on to continue his day, and then commits a bigger sexual crime. Sickening.

I'm hoping he does too. I'm hoping it's someone sick enough to want to see what is going on. Someone not smart enough to know police are around still. I think this is why there was (still may be) a police emergency response truck sitting right at the beginning of the bike path of 78th st, shinning the headlights right into the bike path.

I still think it is someone from that neighborhood.......someone who can see the joggers
Now that it appears she jogged more than once alone I wonder if that's a possibility.

When the weeds were up 10 feet high, there would have to be a path from the house to the trail.
I wonder if they ever observed this?

I also was under the impression that this solo jog was that day only (or that she rarely jogged alone). If she jogged that route regularly alone, that changes things.

Sigh.

OT
I saw it once back in the mid 80's in the subway tunnel. But the guy was covered up a bit and lying down.

I also found the "homeless" to be more polite than the Wall Street types down in the subway tunnels.

I no longer live there (in the NYC area) but the news makes it sounds like NYC has gotten unkempt again since DeBlasio.

I was rarely afraid riding on the subway. Even later at night. (This was in the 80's)I remember riding it one night when it was just me and Bernie Getz!

Yeah, you seem to hear more and more about these subway incidents!

My story is also O/T ish but last night I had my first encounter like that, and I'll never forget the lady who helped me, and reminded me about the importance of kind/vigilant strangers in the face of evil like this. I dozed off on my usual Brooklyn bound train after leaving a bar after work and I woke up to a woman sitting next to me and asking if I was getting off soon, because the guy across from us, she said, had been harassing her for several stops and being lewd and touching himself. Apparently he set his sights on me when he noticed I was falling asleep, and she came over to wake me and tell me about him. As she was doing this he stared cursing at us, touching himself more, generally being weird - I did wake up at one point and notice him but figured he was just a drunk person. I pretended that I had many many stops to go (she winked at me and played along) and then I basically ran out of the train mid-sentence when it was actually my stop. I was so, so grateful for her and yes, worried about leaving her there - I called the transit police right away to report it and they said they would try to have someone there by one of the upcoming platforms for that train.

She was also watching forensic files on a laptop and called herself a true crime buff, which makes her alert to weird/creepy behavior like this - hah, if that was one of you sleuths in person, thank you so much! :) And yes, I was chastised by the person I had been with in the city earlier, who was already worried about the late subway ride and asking me to text when I get home. I'll be careful about falling asleep from now on.

Edit: And I was checking the local news to make sure there wasn't any incident after I got off, I see this and this is definitely him! Holy crap. https://twitter.com/NYPDnews/status/768124446343303168 Not sure if it was posted because of my call last night, or if I should call again?

Although early news reports confused the case narrative, I do recall reading a couple of times that she had jogged by herself before. I wonder if she had always jogged in the fire lanes when she ran alone. From the beginning of this case I felt instinctively that this was not some random rape and murder. FWIW and jmo

Wow that is so scary! I am always afraid to fall asleep on my train ride home, although it is usually very crowded, it is still scary.

Interesting, thank you for sharing. Wonder if they have any DNA from those cases and odd that I've never heard of these case until now!

Also, per the 🤬🤬🤬 page there is a recent update from her father. The award is now at $200,000.

Seems like she only began jogging without father since his recent back injury.

Also, the nearby resident appears to be saying birdwatchers frequent a nearby sanctuary; the homeless frequent the encampment by the bridge,

but the fisherman:

...regularly frequented the park. They often walk to the end of 165th Avenue, cross into the park and pick up a trail that leads south to the water, said...who has lived by the park’s main entrance on 165th Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard since 1971.

The day we walked the Trail of Tears for Karina we saw fishermen coming out of the weeds and going to their cars.

I wonder if NYPD has questioned any of the frequent ones. I know they requested DNA swab of homeless men.

Does anyone know if it was ever mentioned if she was wearing socks? Or if one sock was missing? I don't think I recalled hearing any of this but just curious after seeing something odd today.

I don't remember socks being mentioned, only that 1 shoe was found a distance from her body I think.

I believe they have everything bc this was reported after her sneaker and earbuds were located:

<snip>

BBM

CBS2 has learned the victim’s missing sneaker was found about 100 feet from her body. Her missing headphones were also found.

A police source said all Vetrano’s belongings are now accounted for.
