“We got to get this done,” said Vetrano’s father Philip Vetrano, a retired firefighter. “(The testing) just targets criminals — it’s one criminal related to another criminal, so it’s only targeting the bad guys.”

His wife Cathy Vetrano also demanded the tests be done.

The latest development in the murder investigation came a few days after Vetrano's parents called for the New York State Commission on Forensic Science to allow familial DNA matching in New York, which lets police to search the state and federal DNA database to see if a suspect's relative is in the system.

The suspect in this case was caught from his own DNA, not familial. That's what's been reported thus far. The person agreed to submit his own DNA and it was a match.

They didn't use familial dna on this case. They were petitioning for NY to allow it. Feb 10th they were going to vote on it. The suspect gave his DNA on his own.

In the U.S., individual states have the option to pass their own familial searching laws. Four states – California, Colorado, New York and Florida have taken the lead in this area. So far, only Maryland has categorically banned familial searching.

It is not allowed in NY yet (only partial, not familial), this is what the Vetranos are fighting for. I hope they continue, and I'm sure they will, even if suspect is already caught.
