Boyce said police expect to have the results of DNA analysis of body fluids found at the scene in a few days.

A law enforcement source said detectives couldn’t tell from a visual analysis of the evidence whether the fluids found were saliva or semen but that DNA testing will be able to determine that.

“Karina helped us identify this person,” Boyce said. “She had the DNA under her nails, she had touch DNA on her back and there was more DNA on the cell phone. That’s how we were able to bring the profile up and that’s how we made the link.”

Investigators found DNA on her body, but it did not match anyone in the data banks.

According to Boyce, investigators were able to create a suspect profile based off of a 911 phone call that placed Lewis in the Howard Beach area months before the murder.

Boyce said Lewis does not have a criminal history, but does have

So it seems that he went into Howard Beach a few months before he allegedly killed Karina. And someone called 911 to report a suspicious person. Wonder when the off duty LEO called the precinct about this suspect ? It was reported that the off duty LEO called after Karina was killed. But then early news reports are often confusing. jmo

LE knew from video that no one exited the park in Queens after Karina entered. So they started looking at the Brooklyn entrances to the park. Then they looked at any suspicious activity in that area BEFORE the crime. Then they noticed people (including LE) who called in "suspicious character" reports that matched the "Before" activity.

That is painstaking work. This case was not solved by a lucky break or by a repeat offense (which was my concern), but by tedious and diligent work. Hard-working heroes touch my heart every time.

I think the perp regularly went into the park. He did something (what?) that got noticed enough the people called 911 about him. He kept doing whatever that was so that he had summons from the police.

What could that be? Riding his bike on sidewalks instead of the street? Smoking dope? Panhandling? I have no idea. Anyone have an idea?

Wonder about the dates of those summonses on the bike path

Boyce said police don’t believe Vetrano was stalked and that the murder occurred following a “chance encounter.”

Chanel Lewis, 20 ....
Lewis, who does not work and lives at home with his mother;;;
Lewis is also alleged to have made “detailed incriminating statements.”
Investigators on Sunday were executing a search warrant at his home.
Profile of Lewis and uncovered multiple summonses issued to him placing him in the area dating back to 2013.
DNA of Vetrano’s suspected attacker on her cellphone, neck and fingernails.

Boggles my mind how these losers are almost always unemployed. Why is it ok in some families for a 20 yr old to not have a job or go to school yet still live at home? When I was 20 and living at home I was in school and working full time. My parents would not have let me stay otherwise.

Lewis was interviewed Thursday evening after he was identified as a potential suspect, and he let cops take a DNA sample, Boyce said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office then tied Lewis to DNA recovered from under Vetrano’s fingernails, her back and cell phone, and he confessed Saturday to “each step of the assault,” Boyce said.

He emerged as suspect in Vetrano’s killing in part through a 911 call in May — several months before the slaying — that described him a “suspicious person,” Boyce said.

The 911 caller alerted cops to someone prowling through back yards in the neighborhood.

Lewis lives with his mother nearby, at 576 Essex St., sources said.

Hmmm... that address isn't public housing as has been reported. Looks like a single or multi-family home.

When I look up the address on google and look at a 2013 version of the street view, I think I'm seeing a bike. I am not 100% sure I have the right address so not providing a link.
