27-year-old nursing student found strangled in her bed in parents' Long Island home
A 27-year-old nursing student from Long Island, New York, was found strangled in her home, police said.

Kelly Owen's body was found by her parents around 3:30 p.m. Thursday at their South Farmingdale home, about 42 miles east of Manhattan.


The Nassau County Police Department said Owen woke up around 8 a.m. and got her 6-year-old daughter ready before her father took the girl to school.

The Homicide Squad reports the details of a Homicide that occurred at approximately 3:41 pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 in South Farmingdale.

According to Detectives, Police responded to 14 1st Avenue for a twenty-seven-year-old female not breathing. Upon arrival, Officers located the body and it was determined that the body had expired at the scene and was pronounced by an Ambulance Technician at 3:50pm. The Medical Examiners Office has determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation. The victim has been identified as Kelly Owen, 27, of South Farmingdale.

This is a criminal homicide being investigated by the Homicide Squad. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Kelly Owen, 27, normally heads over to her daughter’s school at 3 p.m., Nassau Police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a Thursday press conference, according to Newsday.

But instead, Owen’s parents returned home at 3:30 p.m. and found their daughter’s car still in the driveway, according to the police official.

“That is what alarmed them to what had happened,“ Fitzpatrick said. “They went in and discovered her body.”

Nassau Police say when they responded to the home they found the body of Kelly Owen, a mother of a 6-year-old girl, in her bed. News 12 sources say she was strangled.

Authorities say there appears to be no obvious signs of a break in. Neighbors say the area has always been safe.

Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick says Kelly was a nursing student, currently on a break, and an active member of the PTA at her daughter’s school.

Authorities say she was found dead by her parents after they noticed her car still in the driveway Wednesday afternoon – a time when she is normally at the school.

Sounds like the killer is someone she knew.

Neighbors are working closely with police, sharing home security video, hoping to spot anyone suspicious entering or leaving the Owens’ South Farmingdale home.

The fact she was found in her bed leads me to believe she may have been killed early in the day...who gets her daughter ready for school? I imagine it is her since she’s so active in the PTA and also picks her up.
So why was she in her bed?
Did she have a consensual encounter that went horribly wrong? Would explain the lack of break in if she let the person in.
I hope neighbors or her own house has cameras.

The article is hard to read, thanks for clarifying. I actually work at a nursing school and the students will typically take advantage of break to relax and study. They never seem to stop studying. I also know a lot have a bad habit of reading in bed, because they’re more comfortable.
Maybe her routine is to take the daughter to school before class and due to the break, she went back to bed and or was studying.
I just don’t understand how or why she would be back in the bed. That’s very intimate. A stranger would not insist they go to a bedroom to strangle. It’s also not a place to flee from someone. It’s usually a persons safe haven.
