Could the caller have used a voice enhancer/disguiser? I have not read anything about that as a possibility.

In the 48 hrs show, the lawyer from buffalo (who seems to have heard the tape) described it as a soft and in control voice. I think I remember hearing that description before this show as well.

watch all the videos again with that in mind and tell me which voice if any in a line up would you describe as soft. Brewer seems to have that NY raspy, low, possibly a smoker? voice. Not much audio of Pak, but from the youtube dog videos he sounds ... ummm distinctly not like the "white male" they describe the voice as... which leaves good ole Doc. Now that's a voice that could be described as soft.

but you should all listen back and judge for yourselves.

Thank you for the information you shared, and clearly he is distancing.

This paragraph is what bothers me the most too. Why on earth would he contact Shannan's family, for any reason at all? Why would anyone ask him to? Most importantly, why would Shannan's BF and Driver ask him to?

I can see a guilty party that lives in the area asking the head of the Association to make an inquiry just to see how much the family knew. To use the ruse of Doctor and Head of the Neighborhood Assoc. to feel it out. But the BF and Driver??!!! Makes no sense at all.

Do the BF and Driver know him personally? Still, if they did know him, it makes no sense.

I completely agree. There's no rational explanation for this statement and I hope that LE has investigated this further.

I personally wish that all suspects in murder cases would write letters, lol. Writing reveals things about a person that the spoken word cannot convey (provided that the writer has been educated to a level of proficiency in writing and that they are writing in their native language). One of my favorite quotes ever was from a professor of Spanish and Portugese studies at my university. He said, "the languages we carry will, in the end, give us away".

Do you mean the capitalization of the term 'missing persons posters'? I didn't notice any other odd capitalizations in his letter. For whatever reason he turned that term into a specific noun, as if those posters were the only posters of that type in the entire world. This could be due to two things: 1. he sees this case as the only missing persons case in the whole world because in some ways it has affected him (which would show extreme narcissism, even if he isn't directly involved IMO), or 2. he's incorrectly trying to make the reader know that he is referring to specific posters. The second example can also be seen when people put quotation marks around certain words for no apparent reason (i.e. an advertisement that says: "sale" today). I noticed that he did use quotation marks around the word 'treated' in the first letter. At first I thought that he might have done this because he is using a word that was reported by others to have been something he allegedly said. If you read further down that first letter, you will see that the next time he uses a form of that word, he does not put quotation marks around it. He may have left the quotes off the second 'treat' because he might have thought that he was now replying directly to whatever allegations were being made against him. If he had put quotes around the word 'treat' throughout the letter, then I would say that there's a definite psychological reason for it; however, since he only did it once, I don't think it's necessarily strange.

yes, "Missing Persons Poster" was what i was referring to. I'm inclined to think, like me, he doesn't remember the specific noun rule. I'm still thinking he just wanted to add focus to "Missing Person". I know that in all the videos he appears in (news12, abc, cbs) he definately throws around the word 'Missing' a lot (his wife too), like that aspect is very very important to him :)
It is hard to hide our true feelings/intentions isn't it.

Yes it is. Another thing that jumped out at me is the line in letter 2 where he says, "I was home, sleeping with my wife." Why is it necessary for him to mention that he was not only sleeping, but sleeping with his wife? Does he say this in order for us to think that he would never have anything to do with a prostitute? Does he say this to give himself an alibi? I could be wrong, but I believe that most people would say, "I was asleep during that time" or "I was at home, sleeping." The mention of his wife seems strange to me.

... One other thing that caught my eye was CPH's mention of how MP and Shannan's boyfriend "asked him to call" Shannan's family. Why would they do this?

Yes, curious ... given that in the link that waltzingmatilida provided above, SG's boyfriend had already called the family on May 3.

The mystery of Shannan's disappearance began on May 3, 2010. Sherre Gilbert got a phone call from her sister's boyfriend reporting that Shannan hadn't come home in two days.

"Immediately, I started to panic ... I knew when he called me that it was something serious..." she says."I could hear the fear in his voice."

Thanks, that does make real sense. Come time for the second letter, he has had time to think/worry and wants it to look like "he doesn't even know how to spell the girls name". :)

do you make anything of the odd capitalization?

I thought the same thing, Truthspider. He wants it to look like he knows so little about her that he can't spell her name. M-C, thanks for all the info. When I first started reading about this case I just assumed Shannan was w/ an O. After a few posts and couple articles it registered to me that I was misspelling her name. My point being that I think most people would not even spell it Shannan, unless they read about her a bit. So, IMO, it is hinky!

ITA, makes no sense. Can it be verified by the BF or MP? Although MP seems pretty hinky, too.

Umm ... sleeping with my wife (as opposed to whom?), didn't see SG, but when I did see her looking sick and distressed, I was sleeping with the wife. I didn't call SG's family, but when I did, I called on May 6 and May 9. I don't recall what was said, but I sure didn't say I "treated" her at my halfway house that I don't have. No clue what I DID talk about in that 4 minutes, but I sure know what I didn't talk about.

C'mon ... who said the doc isn't looking good? :)

What I'm going to say is completely my opinion, and I'm not accusing him of anything.

That being said, when I was watching the 10-second snippet of CPH on 48 Hours last night, I couldn't help but notice that his body language and behavior seemed odd. Now, I have to acknowledge that this was just a tiny snippet of footage that was taken of him, and I couldn't hear what he was saying or what was being asked of him. However, his body language is very weird IMO. He looks like he's talking to the media, then appears to me as if he realizes that he's either saying too much or talking to people who suspect him of something so he starts to turn his back and walk away. For whatever reason, he suddenly turns around and starts talking again. To be completely fair, I have no idea what the media were asking him, but based on his body language, it seemed to me as if his ego got in the way at the end and he had to turn around and say something to the media even though his first instinct (based on his turning around to go back into his house) was to walk away. Did anyone know what he was saying, or what was being said to him? His behavior looked impulsive and erratic (in my opinion) in that clip.

I asked this a long time ago but I don't think we have an answer:

After GC saw MP the morning SG disappeared, I wonder who eventually let MP back through the gate when he left the community? GC saw MP, called LE, then said he went to the gate to let LE in, but there's never been any mention of how MP got back out of the gated community.

Is it possible that the gate was still open due to LE coming in and out? Or am I not understanding the timeline correctly?

Do you need to authenticate anything to exit? I would think code on the way in, and automatic on way out, but I have never been inside the gate.

ITA Esecially becuase, if I have the time line right, he admits to calling after all the publicity.Who would put themsleves near the situation? And from the earlier reports/interviews he (nor his wife)did not seem all that sympathic to what was going on.

How about the emotional difference between the various news clips:

1. at his doorway - he looks winded and shocked and how he "can't believe it's even happening"

2. walking shot - excited and smiling by the cat and mouse game he is playing with the news (and the news is playing with him ;)

3. semi-casual in the car - while wife is driving, notice how he touches face while answering questions, then tries to fix hair, then finally awkwardly closes his lips over his teeth in a self conscious gesture. (pants on fire)

4. on his steps with wife - in sunglasses, shook up and exhausted from "the tough couple of days" they have had because of this.

Why the sever range of emotions? In all of the clips Brewer is in, he seems to be the same stern, semi-douche, long island guy, an average New Yorker :) Brewer doesn't seem to be enjoying any part of this investigation, or getting overly anxious about any part of it.

The range of post-crime behaviors usually include flight (check), participating in the investigation(check), fabricating an alibi(check, check) purpose in avoiding apprehension(check), enjoyment with the continuation of the fantasy (clip 2.)

Post-crime behavior often places the murderer at greater risk of apprehension (phone calls) but they seek the excitement of staying involved with the murder and continuing their fantasy (power).

Thank you so much for that Shadowraiths ;} What a peach.

Having watched so many of these shows on TV I'd have to say this one was exceptional in so many ways. The info was more currant than usual, so many interesting points were included {like what the voice of the killer sounded like}. And seeing the specific geography of the area down to how dark and isolated it really is there at Oak Beach and the spot where Shannan's hoop earring was found ~ brought us all right there. IMO

I loved the show putting out the thought - is the SK watching 48 Hours with us, and almost lost it. A show memorializing his killings might be the next best thing to his doing them, I thought. I'm betting he was settled in for a full hour's watch, sipping Sherry and recording it all.

After all, we learned on the show he is somewhat of an unusual SK, a psychotic sexual sadist I believe it was said on the show.

One thing about 48Hours.. It really gave these women a voice and made them real. The interviews with the family members brought home thier love and despair. I thought Maureen's sister was so eloquent and strong, and showing the log of how many jobs she had applied for and did not get, surely will quiet crtics who toss these gals off as just hookers. Shannon's sisters... so vulnerable. Maybe it will spark some interest from the general public

ITA Crimesnooper and think the show was very well outlined which possibly made the interviews with family so genuine. They stated in their own words what the script would want pointed out.

I can't remember the last few comments of the show. But I know I stood up and was blown away by the thought the writers/ producers or whoever, were trying to call this guy out without actually saying that on TV. I hope that makes sense. Tantalizing him, almost daring him to make another move. I thought how clever is that and hope he bit.

Oh, I know, it was a website you could go to with provocative questions where one would hope he would come and enter into the discussion. I bet they were watching that site - they threw 2 questions out there I believe. A 'Simply Fascinating' approach to calling out a killer IMO.

As CPH starts off his first letter to Mrs. Moriarity of 48 Hours:

Any important story is worth getting right.

Simply chilling.

BTW, I also liked the show's moderator. She was very sharp and nice looking but not too pretty or blubbery to take away from the presentation of the story. Nice job IMO
