Yes, I read an article that the new 3 were found about 500 meters apart. It may also include the one found the other day. I'm going to see if I can find the article but there are so many now...

Found it

"The latest discovery was about a mile east of where the other four were found. The four dead women's remains were strewn about 500 yards apart."

ETA #2: I wonder if they are talking about the original 4 now that I'm re-reading it. It isn't really clear.

Terrible.

I've been following this story, but haven't commented before now.

I just wanted to touch on a few things that you guys were talking about.

That one truck on the Bing picture; I'm pretty sure that is some type of truck with a camper over the bed of it. It also doesn't appear to be a very new truck either, it looks more like a 90's Chevy pickup truck, with a camper over the back of it. If you look closely, it also appears to have 4 doors.

I'm not sure any of that matters, but that is what it looks like to me.

Not much to say, other than that. But I do agree that the perp is probably more likely to be an older guy, rather than young. And I also think he is probably more leaning towards being a professional type, just because of how careful and methodical he seems to be with these killings.

Welcome!

I think so to about the truck. Weird how it is just sitting there isnt it ?

When Shutterfly first posted that , I believe it was called in as a tip. (not positive) So hopefully LE has what they need for the information to look into it , I know she said there where other images that it did show up in.

Thanks svpernin!

"The fact that all eight bodies have been found unburied in burlap sacks has led many to say they are the work of a serial killer"

Anyone think that more will be found? I think this is it, but they're still searching if I've read right. I was surprised they announced so early, as I read they are searching until 7pm, and they announced a few hours ago.

"Gilbert's family is being asked to identify whether the remains found Monday are those of their missing daughter, Dormer said."

Does this mean they're still....identifiable by face?

This is heartwrenching!

Perhaps since Shannan disappeared last May, there could be some identifiable marks. Does burlap preserve human remains? Also, it has been a very cold winter......:(

Just curious, but is that a reliable site?

I only ask because I've never heard of it before.

Not trying to question you though, but it is just very curious new information.

No no, perfectly fair question, Lifted. I didn't do much searching the the hour or so before I saw that article so I just posted it quickly, thinking it was new information that was released in between when I left work and when I got home. Now that I look further into it, I can't find much else about the burlap so it may not be true. The Gothamist is a web news blog and as with any of these websites, mistakes are not unheard of (like last week when a certain news website reported that Gilbert's remains were positively id'ed and they weren't). Keep your eyes open and information will unfold in the next few days. I apologize if that burlap information turns out to be wrong.

Another thought - we heard pretty quickly that the person found the other day was not Shannan. If we don't hear anything right away, especially since we know her family is going to view soon, then that will probably be a big indicator. Were they asked to view the other day, I wonder if they think one of them IS Shannan and want her family there before it gets out into the news?

I was thinking the same thing. The wording is so strange. If they have the medical records, dental records, and DNA for Shannan Gilbert, then what do they need the family for in the identification process? Maybe clothing or personal affects? I don't know. The word "remains" makes me think of bones. The poor Gilbert family has gone through this so many times. I cannot imagine their pain right now.

I have no scientific background but I don't think so. It's probably similar to clothing fabric but tougher. It would kind of protect from the elements, but heat and humidity would still do what they do.

I guess we can't positively connect all 8 bodies to eachother, or to one killer, until they are ID'd..

I hope that's it. I hope they don't go further and find 4 more..

This is like straight out of a movie. Very scary.

I think it is a way for LE to get them there safely, so they are not driving knowing that she was found. They would know if it were her no matter what state the remains are in because of the metal in her jaw (that's the right place?). MOO of course.

either the paper has worded it oddly; shannon's been missing since may 1, 2010 if her remains were to be found, i honestly doubt it's something they'd want her family to see, let alone they wouldn't be able to identify.

yet if they are referring to clothing or articles that possibly had been shannon's then maybe the family could help. le already has the family's dna on file for comparison.

i honestly think it's a mistake of the paper, a mispeak possibly of some sort.

remains are not going to be identifiable by anyone in the family. they are remains, as they stated. the forensics can match the dna up.

They are all May - September.

Seasonal??

What is this guy doing from October to April?

Is it possible that this guy lives in New York during the summer... May - September... then moves somewhere else for October - April?

Could he be a student and away at college? Or a teacher/professor?

Once again, my sources are not definitive but I am told that Shannan's family will be on NG tonight (probably via phone) so maybe we will get some more insight into this. Hope everyone can watch, it's about to start.

Is that the right time frame?? (I had kids way too early to go to college.)

I thought college got out later than the beginning of May, but again there are always exceptions and the 4 identified victims were June, July and September.

That is definitely possible. Might be worth looking into the schedules of the colleges to see if any match up?

Also, the first identified one was 2007. So if that was his first one and college is the reason he's there... he was probably in the area in July of 2007, to get ready for college. So this year would be 4 years he has been there. I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped after this summer if he's a college student.

as we see in the search pictures, le and the volunteers are having trouble with all the thick underbrush and brambles. even the k9s don't like the terrain.
do we know how far from the road the new ones were found?

would the killer have had to walk into the brush at all to dump the latest ones? with terrain that thick and rough it sounds like one would have to know of a path, or make one's own path to get through that.
