Excerpt:

Detective Robert Hahn said contractors made the discovery in February 2003 while working on a basement storage expansion.

"One of them hit the cement slab, it cracked off and he discovered some material. I believe it was the rug the body was wrapped in," Hahn said. "He started pulling on it and a skeleton started coming out. That is when he discovered there was a body in there."

Hahn admits police have no idea who Jane Doe is.

Forensic evidence indicates she was a white female, 15-21 years old, and likely 4'11" to 5'4" with a thin build.

The victim was found with the remains of a bra, pantyhose, and a ring with the initials PMcG.

Hahn said detectives compared those initials to every possible matching missing person report in the country and came up empty handed.

"The people that resided in the building at the time were interviewed and had no involvement in the case as far as we could determine," Hahn said. "They had no knowledge of the body."

Complicating NYPD's ability to locate potential witnesses, Hahn said decomposition indicated Jane Doe had likely been buried in the basement for more than 10 years.

"Information we have was that there were a lot of transients at the time that used that building for drugs or prostitution," Hahn said.

Hahn said the stretch of Hell's Kitchen where Jane Doe was discovered was "much seedier than it is now."

"Somebody, somewhere was looking for her," Hahn said.

At the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, new technology is now helping detectives learn a bit more about Jane Doe.

A sculpture carved with help from the New York Academy of Art depicts what the victim likely looked like.

Chemical signatures from water found in the hair, teeth and bones, have also allowed forensic pathologists to identify the regions where Jane Doe likely lived throughout her life.

"So basically anything we are ingesting in terms of water, will lead an isotopic signature in the bones, hair, and teeth," said Forensic Anthropologist Angela Soler.

Soler explained the isotopic signature on teeth is from a person's earliest years, isotopic signatures on bones represent the last several years of their life and the information from a person's hair indicates where they likely lived in the last three to six months.

"The good thing about this is it can tell us where we don't need to look," Soler said. "And that is what we are using to try to narrow down that needle in a haystack."

Maps based on the isotopic analysis strongly favor the likelihood that Jane Doe was from the Midwest Detective Hahn said.

"A lot of girls came from the Midwest and moved to New York thinking they were going to make it big or get away from circumstances at home but that is not what happened," Hahn said.

Hahn added that Jane Doe was found a near a section of Midtown dubbed the "Minnesota Strip" where young girls from the Midwest often ended up after running into trouble.

So glad they did isotope analysis!

Very good news, looking forward to learning the identity of this young female, hoping the isotopes help!

Susie Johnson, 22, unfolds a hollow condom wrapper and retrieves an emergency phone number she was hiding from her pimp for months.

The emerald-eyed prostitute from Kansas just escaped from two New York johns who kidnapped her, bound her naked in their basement, assaulted her, chopped off her strawberry blond locks while shouting voodoo chants and recording it all on videotape.
Johns tell Hotaling they go for younger girls as the thrill of buying older hookers wears thin. They also try to convince themselves heavily made-up 15-year-olds in wigs are really 20.

Many references to the strip listed here, fwiw.

September 14, 2007 Minnesota Strip (Eighth Avenue, near Port Authority Bus Terminal)

In the 1960s and 1970s, the area of Eighth Avenue between the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd Street) and 59th Street became overrun with teenage prostitutes from the Midwest and was dubbed the “Minnesota Strip” (first cited in 1975). Minnesota had passed tough anti-prostitution laws, and girls from the Twin Cities came to New York.

In the 1990s, a massive development of Times Square began, making the area attractive for businesses and tourists. The term “Minnesota Strip” is largely of historical interest today.

Forgotten NY
🤬🤬🤬🤬 Under a Bad Sign
(...)
The Cameo was located down-and-dirty right on what was known in the mid-1970s as the “Minnesota strip.” The boulevards of sexual and financial needs collided here, attracting underage runaways like moths to a flame. It was a block so deep-fried in its own gristle that it was held up nationwide as a pinnacle of American degeneracy, a sexual Bermuda triangle where 🤬🤬🤬🤬, exploitation filmmaking, and prostitution were likned together. It was a point of infamy in American archeology.

Rats, HUGE thanks for sharing this article. As you all know, Midtown Jane is one of the cases closest to my heart. Hearing that her isotopes point to the midwest makes all the sense in the world. I worked in NYC with a man and a woman who both came here from the midwest at a young age, hoping to make it big in theater and dance. They didn't, but fortunately they did not meet the fate of MJD either. I pray she is ID'd one day.

I'd love to see the isotope map of Midtown Jane Doe. I wonder if it would indicate a certain part of the midwest as more likely (Upper Midwest, Ohio River Vally, Great Plains, etc.)

I'd put $100 on her being from Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Wow Rats thanks for this article awesome news!!!! this is another one of the cases I have researched so much and has really grabbed me.. This is great news they are actually trying to solve this and did the isotopes... Midwest.. I also wish they gave a Map of where they thought in the Midwest she could of come from But as for now we have these states to look into.

The Midwest includes the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

I am wondering if she could be one of the girls that ended up running away from Covenant House and never heard from again.. I posted that on this thread a while back I believe..

Thanks sting this really makes me happy it is active again

I'd put $100 on her being from Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Yeah. Or possibly Iowa, Michigan's upper peninsula, and Chicago/northern Illinois.

I came across this while doing some research for this Midtown jane doe..
Its a long article from April 6 1971 about these pimps who took girls and tortured them. It seems like one of the girls was missing??.. it does not mention a name though.. I wish there was some way to find out who the missing girl was. Only info that might help is that she had a sister and they were from Kansas. I have posted just a couple of the paragraphs of the article.. Jane does clothing items and the 1968 dime seem to fit with someone missing from 1971. Anyway I thought I should post this here.

http://www.nytimes.com/1971/04/06/a...ng-girls-to-force-them-into-prostitution.html
Three of the girls are being held as material witnesses. The fourth, a’ 15‐year‐old sister of one of the other girls, is missing.
The missing girl and her sister, 16, reportedly ran away from their home in Kansas. City, Mo., traveled through Ohio, with a stop in Dayton, and then down to New Orleans, where they met three young men.

Her three male friends, who are being sought by the police, agreed, under the guise of finding her a place to live, are reported to have taken her to 409 Amsterdam Avenue, also said to be an apartment rented by Wimberly. From there, again by Cadillac, the girl was taken to the Grand Concourse address, the District Atorney said. The fourth victim, a 17‐year‐old girl from North Arlington, N. J., was also allegedly sold to the ring by one of the defendants—identified only as Jose—for $130. Jose is being sought by the police.
One of the girls, the missing 15‐year‐old, was taken from the Bronx address just before the police raided the three apartments on March 20, the prosecutor said.

Very interesting and horrifying how all these girls get hoodwinked and forced into sexual slavery.

Wondering if any of the females ( names listed at the bottom of article) accused of participation in holding these girls, have had a change of heart after all these years, and could perhaps remember the Midtown DOE?
speculation.

Does this one warrant phoning in? Seems worth a shot.

I had also Came across this Guy Richard Cottingham which I have mentioned earlier in the thread.. But this time I found a bit more information.. It really has nothing to do with this jane doe BUT... the situation is somewhat similar... I was wondering if this poor woman was ever identified or reported missing or even put up on any data base.. its so sad...
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york...red-husband-suburban-jersey-article-1.1030506
Nothing was ever learned about the second girl, except that she was around 16, 110 pounds and on her last day of her life she wore a pair of BonJour jeans, a burgundy mohair sweater and black patent boots.

The missing body parts were never found, but X-rays identified one victim as 22-year-old Deedeh Goodarzi, a Kuwaiti immigrant who earned her living as a prostitute. Goodarzi's young companion in death was never identified, police estimated her age was just sixteen. The victims’ clothing was found folded in the bathtub in two neat stacks

From the poster looks like there is a bit more information on the unidentified girl.. anyway.. I just wanted to post this since I noticed it and reminded me of midtown jane doe

Here is another article I thought was interesting I though I would post

http://www.nytimes.com/1975/11/16/a...ght-todays-runaway-is-no-norman-rockwell.html

On Feb. 27, 1975, Sgt. Jim Greenlay and Officer Warren McGinniss of the Police Department's Runaway Unit were winding up a 6 P.M.‐to‐2 A.M. tour of duty when they were summoned to the Midtown South Precinct on 35th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, to complete some paperwork, which is one of the banes of their assignment. In the muster room, they noticed a group of young women who had been picked up by a Prostitution Control Unit sweep on a section of Eighth Avenue that has become known to police as “the Minnesota Strip.” Ever since Minnesota passed a law making a second offense punishable by a mandatory 90‐day sentence, substantial numbers of that state's prostitutes have migrated to New York's more hospitable climate.

It was after the graves of 27 boys, many of them runaways, had been unearthed in Houston in August 1973, that Congress passed a Runaway Youth Act, which became law in August 1974. “The number of juveniles who leave and remain away from home without parental permission,” that act said, “has increased to alarming proportions.”

Ten million dollars in Federal funds were allocated for each of the years 1975, 1976 and 1977 for the establishment of shelters and counseling. A national toll‐free runaway switchboard was set up in Chicago; it handles about 1,000 calls a month. It has received calls from 8‐yearolds. It has also drawn up a statistical profile of the runaway: average age, 16; 36 percent male, 64 percent female (this female preponderance is attributed to the fact that many boys aren't reported); 41 percent recidivists and 63 percent who stay in their own

According to an unpublished master's thesis by Lieut. Neil J. D'Avino of the Police Department's Youth Division, the most common runaway is the “splitter,” who takes off as the result of a specific conflict—anything from a minor frustration, such as not being allowed to watch TV, to a severe beating. Then there are the “floaters,” who toy with running away, and are usually back within 48 hours. They seem to feel that running away confers status. Society pays attention. When the status wears off, they get bored and run away again. In contrast to the “floater,” in Lieutenant D'Avino's thesis, there is the “hard‐road freak,” the grunt‐and‐shrug teen‐ager with a record of truancy and an impulsive life‐style, who moves around the country, leaning toward criminality. Another type is the “lonely schizoid,” introspective and hard to reach, who fantasizes about being on his own.

But a common denominator for an overwhelming number of runaways is a broken or unstable home. In some cases, running away is a test of parental concern. In others, it's an escape from manipulation in a home where one parent uses the child to get back at the other. Sometimes running away can be a healthy response to an intolerable situation. Greenlay and McGinniss recently picked up one girl, a thin, sallow‐faced 15‐year‐old from North Carolina, whose drunken father had habitually cursed and struck her and once pulled a gun and fired at her. Her stepmother made irrational demands and punished her for disobeying them. For instance, she told the girl not to look out the window. When she did, the stepmother sewed the curtains together. Running away may have been the most sensible she could do.

Finally, there are the throwaway children. Perhaps their number has been increased by recession and unemployment. The parents make them the scapegoats for their own failures. More than once, Greenlay and McGinniss have called parents to tell them that they have found their missing daughter and been told: “We don't want her back.”

and lastly I came across Reynold Stoddard some Guy from the Bronx that worked as a baker in Queens who literally got away with murder in Feb 1975.. He strangled a 15 yr old prostitute and attempted strangling another one.. Now it looks like he has some catering company in SC.. makes me wonder if any women were strangled there and they never put the pieces together... but again.. I am getting away from Midtown Jane Doe.. Just this girl and her story reminded me of this Jane Doe.. This was all going around the same time.

https://news.google.com/newspapers?...lt9NAAAAIBAJ&sjid=EosDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6339,616542IMG_5640.jpg

http://www.nytimes.com/1975/05/03/a...xter-killing-charge-dropped-in-murder-of.html
After hearing both lawyers, Judge Rothwax said, “The murder charge is dismissed on the motion of people.” Mr. Stoddard, of 210 West 230th Street, the Bronx, remained free on $1,500 bail in the attemptedmurder case. He had not been indicted for Miss Baxter's murder.
Mr. Stoddard, who is employed at a bakery in Maspeth, Queens, was first arrested on March 3 when a prostitute, whose identity has not been disclosed, charged that he had attempted to kill her in a car near the Behnore Hotel, which, detectives have called the: haunt of streetwalkers.
The prostitute told detectives and Mr. Sears that she had been attacked by a man in his car and that the man had brandished a knife and a pistol and had threatened to kill her. She jumped from the car and noted his license plate, Mr. Sears said in court.

Dotr I think your right, that really would be interesting if it were possible, if they are alive..it could not hurt..Your post reminded me of Michelle Maren I believe I posted her page earlier on the thread.. but maybe she has some knowledge or memory of who midtown jane doe could be

She mentioned different people on he page and below is a a paragraph from when she was in Covenant House. and speaks about a girl name Lucy she never knew what happened to...http://michellemaren.blogspot.com/2015/02/

As I sat on my little bed in my mini-bedroom (a.k.a. closet) at the West 47th Street Covenant House group home, I felt thankful - thankful that I now had a roof over my head and hot food in my tummy.

With a sigh of relief, I thought, “I’m finally safe.” At the group home, there was a 12-year-old streetwalker named Lucy. She was going to testify against her pimp who, according to the Vice Squad and FBI, was a very big player in the New York crime scene during the Seventies.

That March, Lucy (along with Father Bruce Ritter) appeared on a 60 Minutes special report on teenage prostitution titled “Runaways, Throwaways.”
I sat and watched the episode with Lucy and the other girls in the group home. Lucy was interviewed while in shadow.

On a daily basis, there were strange black vehicles parked outside of the group home. Creepy men peered at our building through darkly tinted car windows. Sometimes, they very, very slowly drove up and down the block - peering all the way.

From behind prison walls, Lucy’s pimp had put out a hit on her.

We were all extremely frightened and asked the staff to relocate Lucy. They did and I never knew what became of her.

Considering the isotopes show she was from the Midwest, I wonder if Sandra Bertolas was ever considered. Seems like it might be a long shot and her pictures on Doe Network and Charley Project show her with a bigger build and darker hair.

What is compelling is the video linked here. You have to go thru the pictures in the video. There are pictures showing her with a lighter color hair and even a tint of red. She was a hairdresser, so its possible she could have dyed her hair. If she had been kidnapped for prostitution, she may not look as polished as the pictures show. Also note the photo in the video (family photo's on wall) which appears to show a thinner build.
