Identified! NY - Mount Vernon, WhtFem 51UFNY, 18-25, Left Near Junkyard, Feb'88 - Veronica Wiederhold

I was thinking I am going to go through some missing people and see if they are buried there. Mount Vernon is right out side of the East Bronx , Bronx is part of NYC. I wouldn't think people out side of NYC would be buried there, until I found some graves of people that died in Long Island which could be up to 50 miles away and up to 150 miles to the tip of Long Island.

Maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't her case file list or the coroner know what happened to the body?

I've just spent the last few days reading this entire thread... This poor girl must have suffered tremendously in her last hours, yet it sounds as if people are deliberately blocking information that might hold the key to identifying her. There are some real heartless jobsworths out there, she was a person, someones daughter and maybe sister. She was robbed not only of her life but of her identity! Jess you truly have a heart of gold, you have done so much to help this poor girl that you didn't know.

I haven't read the entire thread as of yet (it's very long!!) but I did find a girl that I think looks very much like our girl here. Barbara Cotton. Height, weight, age, facial features, even the mole/birthmark on her chest match up. I was thinking that since she went missing when she was 15 in 1981 she could have been a runaway and eventually made her way to New York, or she was trafficked. North Dakota to New York is a pretty long distance but their faces just look so much a like.

Could you provide a link, please?

Looks promising! You should forward this tip to the MVPD!

You have to be registered (citizen of USA or territories) and signed in. The Comparisons option shows up between Images & Documents and Contacts.

You would think so, but I've come across a couple of cases where no one knows where the remains are. They get misplaced, are buried in a common grave, or are a casualty of poor record keeping. Little Miss X comes to mind. IIRC, they sent her remains somewhere to be re-examined or tested (this was b4 DNA profiling) and lost track of her. Last I knew, AZ was still searching.
In CA, they cremated a lot of the unidentified, so those DNA profiling opportunities are lost.

Barbara Cotton's Charley page: Barbara Louise Cotton – The Charley Project

It's worth following up, but I'll be very surprised if it's a match. Barbara had scoliosis, which should have been pretty obvious on the autopsy.

I wonder if they may have some hair samples in evidence that they could use for genetic genealogy, similar to how Precious Doe (Snohomish Co.) was solved.

Becky has DNA in NamUs so she's not a match for sure

My understanding is that DNA being in the NamUs system does not equal automatic rule out. We can only assume someone is ruled out if they appear in the rule outs list.

My understanding is that DNA being in the NamUs system does not equal automatic rule out. We can only assume someone is ruled out if they appear in the rule outs list.

According to one of the reps at NamUs, they automatically compare DNA in CODIS, this includes comparing UPs to UPs, not just MPs to Ups. So if both the MP and the UP are in CODIS, and there isn't a match, those automatic rule outs don't appear on the NamUs page rule out list because of the sheer volume of names and the amount of work it would take to do to update it. So, we can assume if an MPs & a UPs profiles are in CODIS, even though the name is not on the list, that they have been compared and ruled out (if not a match).
The problem is we have no way of knowing which profiles are in CODIS and which ones are being held locally. That's why I always say, when in doubt, submit.
