Kind of hard to believe that a Muslim from Bangladesh would not know what ISIS is? ISIS has bombed a few mosques there in the past 2 years and has moved into the Bangladesh area. How could he not know what ISIS is?

If you heard ISIS pronounced in Bengali or Arabic would you recognize it?

If zI lived in Pakistan then I would probably recognize how it was pronounced there.

That's an interesting stance - is that a new LE thingy in NY?

A victim is suppose to understand the inner workings of the perpetrator now? A rape, robbery, car-jacking victim should understand a language/terms spoken during the crime in order to be taken seriously?

What about the 9 year-old? This is partly about the 9 year-old right? What was she suppose to understand before calling 911?

Totally lost on this new thought process - would really appreciate some help seeing something other than the crime at hand.

Just some juvenile delinquents with nothing better to fill their time. The perps probably only have a slight idea of what ISIS is. And, no, the national media will not report the race of the perps unless they are white and fit into the story the media is so eagerly waiting to print.

I can sorta see how some would consider this point relevant - like the juveniles occupying government building in Oregon - with nothing better to fill their time. Boys will be boys and girls will be girls - I guess. The media point is vague - but whatever. Jmo.

I don't get it either. I don't think it's on the victim to understand what or why someone is assaulting him. In this case there's also the language barrier - he was speaking through a translator - but what difference does it make? He and his niece are victims of a hate crime. It doesn't matter what he said or who did it or what he was wearing. That's all irrelevant.

eta: It matters who specifically did it, but imo their gender, race, age, etc., isn't important.

Totally bizarre line of questioning a victim -- but, sadly, not at all surprising.

it really broke my heart to see this happen. It really makes me wonder wth is the matter with people. Race snd religion aside, if someone is hell bent on assaulting people they will find reasons to do so. I hope the victims are able to physically and emotionally heal.

What difference does it make if he has or has not heard of ISIS? ???

It doesn't. It's just a nitpicky detail used in an attempt to discredit the victim, or accuse him of lying, or possibly hint at him being a member of ISIS.

Two teens arrested on assault charges for allegedly beating Muslim man in Bronx while shouting about ISIS

Cops arrested a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old for the Jan. 16 attack after the younger boy’s mother heard the boys bragging to their friends about the hate crime, a police source said.

The alarmed mom turned her son into the 43rd Precinct, where he gave up his 15-year-old partner, who was then nabbed at his school Friday morning, officials said. The suspects — whose names were not released because of their ages — were charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment as a hate crime. The older teen faces a list of other charges, including acting in a manner injurious to a child.

Didn't they call this a mugging before "hate crimes" became a way of life? I assume if you are assaulting and/or battering someone, you hate them. JMO

Or a detail because the victim told it to reporters? It is really difficult to know someone's thinking and intentions. The best we can do is educated guesses. Even the most expert person of mind-reading, psychology, and psychiatry just make educated guesses.

If you're sincerely interested in learning what constitutes a hate crime there's lots to be read.

Well, people on this site, prosecutors, and defenders will all claim they know what is in every person's mind that was involved. Even though we logically know that is impossible.

Thanks. I think my educated guesses were right on the money,
