April 28, 2025 article

[…]

Krommidas, a Democratic candidate for the Nassau County Legislature’s Fourth District, parked his car near the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach and walked onto the beach to exercise at around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, friend (name retracted by me) shared on Facebook.

Police recovered his towel, clothes, and phone on the beach the following morning.

That’s an odd time to exercise on the beach? Does exercise mean swimming?

I believe he went swimming. According to this article:

She added: “On Wednesday, April 23, Petey parked his car by the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach, New York. He locked his car, took a towel, and around 10:30 p.m. walked onto the beach to exercise, just as he had done many times before. He has always been in great shape and has many future plans, including participating in a triathlon. He was not a stranger to cold water training.“

The day after he was reported missing, police found his towel, clothes and phone on the beach.

The clothes and phone of missing Long Island Democrat Petros Krommidas have been found on a beach close to his car, his family said — as they revealed he likely swam in the sea while training for an upcoming triathlon.

His family asked for the public's help to walk along the beach, focusing on the area between Lido Beach to Riis Park, specifically during high tide, listing approximate times for when would be best to search for any clues.

The Krommidas family has arranged search parties to walk the beaches between Long Beach, Lido Beach and Jacob Riis Park during high tide over the coming days.

Police said he was last seen wearing a camouflage print sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.

He is described as a white male, six feet two inches tall, 230 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Has it been stated if the clothes he was last seen wearing were the same clothes found on the beach?

It's believed Krommidas, 29, went swimming in the ocean off the Long Beach boardwalk on the night of April 23. He hasn't been seen since.

His clothing and cellphone were found there, and his car was found in the parking lot of the Allegria Hotel on the boardwalk

We can only suppose that what he was last seen wearing is what was found on the beach the day after. He went swimming at night according to the Daily Mail.

There is a lot of messaging about Petros' disappearance on social media. But I haven't seen any reports on search efforts on any clues not already reported in news sources. If he drowned it seems like his body would have surface by now, unless it was washed out to sea.

There is a FB from his sister listing search locations and times.

I saw this on the news today. Very sad, he has been described as very bright and good guy, and had a bright future ahead.
There's the possibility he was taken by a shark. Sharks are known to come into shallow waters near shore at night, when it's peak hunting time for them. And he was alone, more dangerous to appear as prey.
But then I'd expect he would have known that since apparently he often trained at night. Or maybe, since he's never encountered one before, he felt safe.
We generally think of Florida waters, but sharks are also present in NY.

County Executive Bruce Blakeman said Thursday he ordered the mobilization of Nassau’s Community Emergency Response Team and drone team to conduct an aerial search that began in Atlantic Beach.

The drones are searching “along the coast and nearby areas” while a command post was set up at Catalina Beach Club, Blakeman added.

"We are working on parallel tracks. Track number one is that he's still alive and we're looking for information about his whereabouts. Track number two is if he did have a tragic accident, that we can recover the body and make sure that the family is comforted with knowing that you'll be able to provide a proper funeral," said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

It sadly looks like drowning IMO with items left on the towel to go in the water.

Time is a bit odd but a friend of mine is an athlete who competes in swimming / running competitions, he often would go to take a swim or run at odd hours because its less crowded and quiet to focus.

Nothing on social media indicates they found Petros.
A Nassau County official mentioned the following: While we did not find any evidence of Petros, we covered the entire island on foot including offshore in East Rockaway & Jones Inlets with drones. Focus was to get out during the lowest tide to view the rocks & jetties. Thank you all who stepped forward to help out find this young man.

Mother of Missing Long Island Political Candidate, 29, Begs Rescuers to 'Bring My Boy Home' After Nearly 2-Week Search

Published on May 6, 2025 03:09PM EDT

The mother of a missing Long Island political candidate is pleading with rescuers not to give up on their search nearly two weeks after his disappearance.

[…]

Krommidas’ mother, Maria Lo Krommidas, has continued to lead search efforts for her son, posting tide patterns and pleading with local beachcombers, drone operators and divers to help search the beach and water for evidence.

“It’s been 12 days without knowing where he is,” she wrote on social media on Monday, May 5. “I can’t thank you all enough for all your efforts and time for all the love, prayers and support BUT I’m asking you, PLEASE DON’T STOP SEARCHING, DON’T GIVE UP ON HIM.”

“Every pair of eyes helps. Every step along the beach matters,” she added in another post. “Thank you for being part of bringing Petey home.”
