I sent in the possibility that this is Patrick Pegg from Missouri. He matches all the available information; same height, race, gender, hair colour, and eye colour of Patrick and very close weight range as well.

There is no DNA on file apparently for Patrick. Hopefully they can get some. I can't tell if John Doe has a scar on his forehead, and there is no mention of a gunshot wound but everything else fits.

did he rope because of post-9/11 trauma?
This was my immediate thought as well! 9/11 affected the entire country, but it was definitely more intense in the directly impacted areas.

I immediately wondered if he could be military from the haircut. Maybe not 9/11 trauma, but the knowledge that we were going to war.
Great observation re: the haircut! A "military angle" would never have occurred to me. But President Bush had announced the War on Terror just eight days prior, so this theory makes perfect sense.

One pushback though: if this is true, wouldn't it have actually made it easier to identify this man? The military would've had his photo on file and listed him as AWOL.

Then again, the months following 9/11 felt very chaotic, so it's possible the AWOL list was simply never cross-referenced with reports of unidentified remains.

Not necessarily. If he was guard or reserves and just never showed up to drill again he wouldn’t be on any AWOL list.

Does he have a military haircut or is his hair longer and pulled back from his face for identification purposes? His hair is described as straight which suggests it's long enough to identify if it's curly, wavy or straight.

that’s a good point. i think his hair is as short as we see in the photo, it doesn’t look pulled back to me. BUT, since it is so short, it’s possible that if this person was reported missing it’d be with a hair type other than straight. it’s possible his hair was recently cut that short and it normally has some sort of pattern that isn’t detectable at that length. something to keep in mind while searching for matches imo.
