Robert E. Chambers Jr., who is known to many as the "preppie killer," arrived more than an hour late for his sentencing hearing today on drug charges, and a Manhattan Criminal Court judge tacked an extra 10 days onto his three-month jail term.
Mr. Chambers, appearing gaunt and wearing a black T-shirt and baggy gray sweatpants, apologized to Judge Gerald Harris, saying he had been held up while attempting to pay overdue parking tickets.
The judge sentenced Mr. Chambers to a total of 100 days at Rikers Island, saying his tardiness violated the agreement he had made with prosecutors earlier this summer when he pleaded guilty to heroin possession and driving with a suspended license. The plea had helped him avoid what could have been a one-year sentence if he had been convicted by a jury.
