It's been 10 days now since 14-year-old Samantha Humphrey was reported missing. Search teams were busy over the weekend.

Monday marked 10 days since Samantha Humphrey, 14, was reported missing by her mother.

The scene at Riverside Park in Schenectady was active Sunday, with multiple agencies busy searching for the girl. NewsChannel 13’s cameras captured marine rescue boats on the river and a helicopter searching from overhead.

Authorities have a pretty good idea where the search zone begins, but given the murky water and the swift current of the Mohawk, where it ends is anyone’s guess.

Samantha’s mother, Jaclyn Humphrey, spoke to NewsChannel 13 last week. She tells us her daughter went to the park Nov. 25 to meet up with an ex-boyfriend. No one has seen her since then.

The working theory is that Samantha fell into the river from a railroad bridge at the south end of Riverside Park.

Assuming a body hasn’t been caught up in the debris on the river bottom or the jagged rocks on riverbanks – and giving the strong current – the search could extend several miles downstream, if not further.

Meanwhile, one of Samantha’s close friends, Hajile Howard, was also reported missing last month. Police had told us Hajile’s disappearance had nothing to do with Samantha’s. Sources are now telling NewsChannel 13 that police have had contact with people in touch with Hajile, and they are confident she is okay.

SCHENECTADY — The grandfather of missing Schenectady girl Samantha Humphrey is opposing a fundraising effort from the girl’s mother to hire a private detective to assist in the ongoing search.

Humphrey, 14, was last seen on Nov. 25 at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the area of Riverside Park in the Stockade neighborhood of Schenectady.

Samantha’s mother Jaclyn Humphrey started a GoFundMe page on Dec. 1 in order to raise funds to hire a private investigator and attorney to complement the police search for her daughter.

John Matarazzo, Samantha Humphrey’s grandfather, said on Wednesday that he and his wife Diane are opposed to the fundraising plan and wholeheartedly support the efforts of the Schenectady Police Department and the additional agencies that continue to search for their granddaughter.


“Her mother is distraught,” Matarazzo said. “But she just doesn’t understand – we don’t need money to find the girl. A private eye is not going to find the girl. She’s not hiding somewhere. My wife and I raised her brother (Mattox) for the longest time. We’re the closest to them of anybody. If Samantha was alive, she would have at least let us know that she was alive. Because she cared about us. So there’s no way that I believe that she’s hiding somewhere. I hope that I can be proven wrong, but I don’t have that feeling.”

Gotta agree with the grandfather. It's always weird when a parent that does not have custody starts any kind of "go fund me" or the like. It's also odd to do it so soon. Wait until the police don't have any more leads to work. MOO

NewsChannel 13 checked on the search Monday. We learned one volunteer boat was out on the Mohawk River.

There’s been no sign of Samantha since November 25, after meeting with her ex-boyfriend in Riverside Park in the Stockade neighborhood.

Police have said the young man, who is also 14 years old, is cooperating with the investigation.

Schenectady police and the Schenectady County District Attorney’s office continue to investigate her disappearance.

SCHENECTADY – City police and other law enforcement agencies are conducting an enhanced search along the Mohawk River Thursday for missing Schenectady 14-year-old Samantha Humphrey, city police said.

The search area is running approximately four miles from the city’s Stockade neighborhood to the Rexford Bridge in Niskayuna, police said.

The search is to include a state police helicopter, dive teams and law enforcement conducting a grid search along both sides of the river, police said.

Searchers are to be out throughout the day looking for Samantha and “evidence in this missing person case,” police said in a release.

“We would like the public to be aware of these comprehensive search efforts so as not to cause alarm,” city police said in a release Thursday morning. “We would also like to reassure the public that this case remains extremely active, and the department along with our law enforcement partners will dedicate the resources necessary to find Samantha.”

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — During a press conference near a command center set up along the Mohawk River, Schenectady Police Chief Eric Clifford told reporters that images from security cameras on the night Samantha Humphrey went missing capture her walking near an area along the Mohawk River. However, he says that his detectives have found no images of her leaving the general location.

“Through surveillance video we were able to track some of Samantha‘s movement to show that she was in the area at that time, and we simply see her walking in that direction,” said Clifford to reporters. During the press conference, the leader of the Schenectady Police Department also talked about a jacket that is believed to belong Samantha, a black and pink
coat that was shared on social media after it was discovered along the shoreline near the footings of a railroad bridge that crosses the Mohawk River.

NEWS10’s Anya Tucker asked Clifford if any of the images they have collected show Samantha wearing the jacket.

“At this time, we are just not able to determine whether the photographs and or video match what was found,” answered Clifford.

Police say on the night she went missing, Samantha texted a friend, telling them she planned on meeting up with her 14-year-old ex-boyfriend in the area near the Front Street pool, which is located next to a railroad bridge. The spot is considered a popular place for teens to hangout. That was around midnight on November 25.


When she didn’t come home, her father searched for her. Police confirm that it was her dad who spotted the black and pink jacket along the riverbank. Clifford says it was sent to the New York State Police crime lab. He told reporters that they have not ruled anything out, including the teen running away. All he would say about Samantha’s ex-boyfriend was that he was cooperating with police.

I'd guess the latter. It is likely a minor they're taking about, they probably don't want to give any kind of identifying information.
