"Mitch Johnson said one of his best friends checked on his hunting cabin in Malone Friday afternoon and called police after noticing the scent of grape flavored gin as soon as he stepped into his cabin and spotting the bottle that had gone untouched for years resting on a kitchen table.

Johnson said his friend, correction officer Bob Willett, told him he summoned police about an hour before Matt was fatally shot and then heard a flurry of gun blasts."

So, so far the first cabin (Owl's Head) was owned by a group of COs who were in teh hunting club there, and the last cabin (Malone) was owned by a CO but yesterday all through this thread there was some confusion as to whether the second cabin (Malone but not the one with the grape gin and Mattpoop) was ALSO owned by a CO.

Not sure if we ever got confirmation on the owner of cabin number two.

Not to be confused with cabin number three where they recovered number two. :p:p

Grape flavored gin :gaah: reminds me of drinking Boones Farm when I was very very young. :giggle: Although I now have graduated to 3 buck chuck from Trader Joes

Wow...I got completely confused. I thought there were only two cabins (Owl's Head and Malone) that were confirmed at having been broken into. So, there were three? When it's all said and done, we're probably going to learn there were several cabins broken into by M&S.

I thought the Matt poop was discovered near the Malone cabin.

I wonder what the chances are that he slipped down a southward path and is heading towards his hometown? Probably not good.

I don't feel like Sweat would try to get into Canada at this point though.. don't know why but I just don't. I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to survive for awhile out of the spotlight at this point. Tell ya what though if Sweat was wearing a moth costume my cats would get him in a heartbeat.

I think its interesting that after finding the Mattpoop someone here speculated taht LE could test it to find out not only what he had eaten but also what his state of health was, generally speaking, and then on TV it came out that they think the men are dehydrated, and then that he was found in the end by a cough.

It's been raining like a sonofagun for the better part of this hunt, it's been in the 40s and 50s overnight, they're fighting the bugs and terrain, etc... I think it's more likely than not that they're both sick. I think it's safe to say Matt was a bit under the weather at least.

One Owl's Head cabin, two malone cabins and a malone field location where someone bedded down.

I believe DNA confirmation came from all 3 cabins AND the field location. I'll see if I can find links.

TWCNews (local station) Live: at the presser:

D'Amico: just wanted to take a second to (missed this part, people talking in my living room!)

had a burglary in a camp about 3 miles off of any roadway. Late Wed night we received a report of a breakin in a cabin off rt 41 in Malone, screen had been cut and window broken into, got evidence there as well indicated Matt was there too, late yesterday employed a number of officers and tactical team to that area, today confirmed property at the scene was in fact Matt's, today found a camp area where it appeared maybe someone had laid down and slept (people talking again).

today people .. their camper had been shot... realized a bullet hole through a camper they had been towing... (sorry can't hear the tv. :gaah: )

... there was movement detected by officers on the ground, what appeared to be coughs so what appeared to be humans not wildlife so a team from customs and border protection met up with Matt, was shot dead by border patrol at that time, we retrieved a 20 gage shotgun with Matt's body at that location, we have K9s, a decent perimiter set up, looking for Sweat at this time, no sighting of him, but no indication he wasn't with Matt, gonna continue what we've been doing the past couple of days, been successful thus far.

thankful for tips, want to thank LE partners, etc

BBM - so yeah there's the Owls Head cabin owned by a group of hunting club COs.

There's the Malone cabin off route 41 where property of Matt's was recovered. (Was the "property" the feces? Now I keep forgetting which is which with these darn cabins!!)

There's the Malone camp area outside / field location where it appeared someone had bedded down (and candy wrappers were found).

There's the Malone cabin owned by CO Willett where LE smelled gunpowder while investigating the camper that was shot, and they found Matt outside a short distance away thanks to his coughing.

So, cabin 3 was gin and poop...what did they find in cabin2? Sounds like a dehydrated Matt got drunk and tried to snag a camper....JMO

Remember Sweat murdered an innocent young husband/father/off duty police officer who was out at a little restaurant having dinner with his wife and child, in casual clothes: Sweat shot this innocent young man 24 TIMES and topped it off by running him over with the man's personal vehicle (the young officer got a phone call at dinner to check somebody suspicious out lurking by some business).

I think it's safe to infer from such 'overkill' that Sweat does NOT like law enforcement. And I bet Sweat was quite ticked off 'at the hotel management' when he no longer got to spend his prison days with his Boo, Tillie...

Also, I think it's safe to infer that Sweat is selfish and lacks empathy for other people (e.g., Sweat could care less that he viciously kills a young, much beloved husband and daddy...)

Sweat has prob' put 2+2 together, and figures if he's caught, his prison life will not be 'cushy' - no more make out sessions with old-lady-sewing-teacher, no more burgers grilled to order, no more 'May I have a hacksaw?'/'May I have a Phillips?'/'May I have a wrench?' and get these delivered to you pronto.

Oh, forgot, with Cinderella not showing up at the ball (Tillie not showing up at the sewer lid when she was s'posed to...), I think it's safe to guess that Sweat doesn't feel basis trust in his 'fellow man/woman' (LOL) and perhaps is a tad 'down on women'....

Hmmmmm............

I wonder how Sweat can survive for long without basic h20, dehydrated terribly, his body core temp' dropping, chilled to the bone in the night, so hot in the day, without sound sleep....... Oh, and Sweat is being hunted nonstop - remember 'it's not paranoia when they're really after you!!'

I can't wrap my mind around what Sweat must be feeling right now, what he will choose to 'do' next ....

This here tells it slightlyh differently and makes a little more sense IMO:

"the shooting of the camper led officers to a cabin off Fayette Road in Malone which had reportedly been broken into on Wednesday, Mr. D’Amico said. He said a screen had been cut and a window was broken into. He said on Wednesday, police recovered evidence from that break-in that indicated Matt had been at the scene.

When officers revisited the cabin following the shooting report, they discovered the smell of gunpowder and that someone had fled out the back door, Mr. D’Amico said. While searching the property, officers heard coughs and detected movement, and tactical teams came upon Matt in the woods. "

No he didnt. None of that is correct. You are thinking of a different person and different crime altogether. I'm a local to that crime and then some. That is incorrect.

http://www.pressconnects.com/story/news/public-safety/2015/06/10/tarsia-files-david-sweat/28735471/

There is no wife.

There is no child.

There is no restaurant.

There are no casual clothes.

There is no 24 gunshots.

There was no call to check something out during dinner.

None of that is right. Sorry but seriously.

Sweat and his cousin Nabinger and a friend Devaul drove over the NY/PA border, stole a truck, rammed it into the side of a fireworks store that was known to also have a lot of guns inside, stole the guns, came back over the NY border, and went to a little park in Kirkwood where they were switching the guns to a different vehicle when Deputy Tarsia saw the car there and pulled in to see what was going on (in his uniform, in his police car, not while having dinner - he worked the overnight shift, this was like 4am when this happened).

He was shot a combined total of 22 times by the 2 people who shot him, 15 by Sweat, who then ran him over (not with the police cruiser, with Sweat's vehicle).

No less terrible but let's at least be accurate here.

Per Accuweather...looks to be 54 degrees in Malone right now.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/06/0...ison-and-uneventful-time-served-before-their/

David Sweat was one of three men arrested after 36-year-old Deputy Kevin Tarsia of the Broome County Sheriff's Office was killed on the Fourth of July in 2002 in the town of Kirkwood, near the New York-Pennsylvania border.

Tarsia, a 13-year veteran, was shot 15 times and then run over with a vehicle after discovering the trio transferring stolen guns between vehicles in a park near his home. The suspects had stolen the guns after ramming the front door of a Pennsylvania fireworks store with a pick-up truck.

I didn't realize it happened on the 4th of July.

The best story for this is the one I've linked no less than about 8-9 times, and is in my post above. Our local paper here in Binghamton did a three part series on it and this article is a combination of all three plus info gotten from the unsealed court records. Nothing else tells the story as right as this article IMO. FWIW.

As so much of this spectacle has played out as surreal and Sweat is still perspiring, time to soundtrack it with the great NY band Blue Öyster Cult's homage to escape and capture by the Canadian border:

Not to be disrespectful, but I'm hoping to hear more about Matt today. Would love to know if he was injured, sick, without boots, what items he had on him, etc...

  • #238
On CNN did anyone else hear that guest a few minutes ago? What he said about Sweat wearing a sneaker/sneakers? I could swear he made it sound like he's only wearing one sneaker right now..??

GGE - I saw a whole film on that! A recreation of what Sweat did ! ??? Of course I trust you.....

SO VERY GOOFY how news gets scrambled - for instance, this morning as I click around reading articles, watching some videos, I see one article that says that correction officers' cabin is 1 1/2 miles down an obscure road and then 40 min. hike ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY HIKING THROUGH DENSE WOODS WITH A BACKPACK. Ok, so ahhh, how'd they get those bunk bed mattresses and the sofa in??? So then I see a video of a reporter just outside the cabin, then putz'ing in the cupboards inside: clearly there's a dirt road there, and even a big truck could get to the cabin....

Oh, and then there's owner 1.) peeks in window & sees a person, or 2.) owner smells grape gin, or 3.) owner sees cut screen & smashed window, or 4.) owner enters, sees h20 out, then hears one person run away, or 5.) owner ... is certain there are two people..... on and on.

Sorry if I made a mistake, but, I got that info' from one of those recreation of the crime shows.....

then the film was a lie. I won't go so far as to say I know the family personally but my husband used to work (and train) at the gym where Deputy Tarsia came to work out and knew him casually from their interactions there, and my husband still to this day has some contact with at least one of Kevin's siblings. I've known the name Tarsia from my husband for probably 15 years anyway if not longer. (ETA - trying to think back, it was 1996 when he worked at that gym so I guess it's more like 20 years. No wait, it was 1995. I know based on when one of my children was born.)

For what it's worth.
