1995 article:

THE SON of the Police Department's authority on fingerprints has disappeared without a trace. Steve Aiello, 23, whose testimony helped free a man charged with killing a powerful mobster's son, was last seen leaving his father's Morris Park house in the Bronx. Police believe Aiello may have been kidnaped and murdered by Genovese mobsters seeking retribution. His father, Frank, one of the most highly regarded civilians at 1 Police Plaza, runs the NYPD's Bureau of Criminal Investigation...

rbbm.
On April 26, 1993, Parrello's son Pasquale, 24, was shot to death. Police arrested and charged Mirdita with murder. He was caught at the scene with a gun. On the eve of the trial this summer, the defense found an alibi witness Steve Aiello. He testified without ever telling his father, and Mirdita was acquitted. Assistant District Attorney William Hrabsky believes Aiello perjured himself. Aiello was also at the Strike Zone Bar in Yonkers on the winter night in 1994 when members of the Tanglewood Boys, a gang of wanna-be mobsters, stabbed a college student, Louis Balancio, to death. Aiello, who has "Stevie" and red panther paws tattooed on his right arm, was supposed to begin work as a bricklayer at Local 37. He disappeared after being with a friend, Michael Marricco, who has refused to cooperate. Some feel the missing Aiello might be on the lam. They say if the mob killed him, they would make a public show of it.

I keep coming back to this thread because this story is so crazy when you think about it.

Steven was closely associated with the well known mob Gambino/Genovese families. And his dad worked at the New York Police Department's Bureau of Criminal Investigation at the time.

I'm honestly surprised we don't hear more about this case. This is like something out of a movie!

But here's the thing I keep coming back to. How does the son of someone working the NYPD's BCI unit in any way end up a witness in a mob trial?
His disappearance may be linked to retribution for perjury as an associate or an alibi witness concerning the Gambino and Genovese Mob family.
I would love to know more about his life, I feel that would give us more insight. But I can barely find anything about him.

And it turns out there are quite a few folks by that name in that area of the USA.

Profile: Genovese crime family capo Pasquale Parrello
This write up explains the incidents that led to the trial. This really does read like a movie! Ok so from what I can gather:

Genovese crime family captain Parrello Sr slapped Torie LoCascio for being disrespectful in the italian social club/ restaurant. But “Tore” Locascio was the son of Gambino family advisor Frank Locascio (who was in jail alongside John Gotti Sr.)

It appears that while Locasio Sr was in jail, Locasio Jr was running his big mouth, being obnoxious, using his dad's name around town, hence the slap in the restaurant.

Now I can't tell if word got to Locascio Sr or if Locascio Jr took it upon himself but at some point they got revenge by way of an Albanian ganster named Victor Mirdita.
On April 23, 1993, Parrello’s 24-year-old son Pasquale Jr. was shot to death.

An Albanian gangster named Victor Mirdita was apprehended near the crime scene and charged with the murder. He was part of an Albanian crew which allegedly was close to the Gambino family and the Locascios.

Merdita eventually went to trial, and was acquitted of murder (he went to jail for something else) but as per the news article posted above, this was the case that Aiello testified as a defense witness. Unbeknownst to his NYPD father

It was his testimony that helped Merdita avoid the murder charge. *Note how in the article there is a quote from the assistant DA at the time who thinks Ariello perjured himself on the stand.

The strange thing about all of this is that the last place Aiello was seen on Bronxdale Avenue. That is Gambino territory not Genovese territory.

So was the Gambino family tying loose ends, or did the Genovese family somehow get revenge for the death of Parrello Jr and Merdita being able to walk free?
