When I first started looking at this thread I considered that it was possible that it happened as the fiance said. We don't have any actual evidence that something bad happened to her, but logically, it's unlikely that she ran away, never to contact any family member again.

We have so little to go on, and are all reading our own opinions into what we do have, but we have to be careful and tread with caution until more facts emerge.JMO

Do we actually know the location where this event actually took place, parking lot ect:

We have his word on where and when it happened, but no other corroborating information. Really, it could have been anywhere on Staten Island or Manhattan or New Jersey...

Absolutely, and who am I to second-guess this guy? He was about the age that my son is right now, and it would be difficult to imagine my son hurting somebody that he was planning to marry, although I know it happens all the time.

Also thinking (re the part BBM) that "heart shape" says "large." $$$

please excuse if this is a dumb question, but do we know what job the b/f had? i mean if it was a very expensive ring was it bought on credit??

  • #465
That's IF she said that... This is all speculation but I kind of envisioned that she was hanging out at his house, then they decided to go to the movies... I think that partly because if he was just going to pick her up and go to a movie, why would they go all the way across town to a theater near his house, when I'm sure there were a couple theaters closer to her house...

I am not sure about the USA, but here different cinema chains had an alligence to movie studios back then and if they wanted to see a certain movie they may have had to go to the one that was showing it JMO..

Yes, you are right, engagement announcement did say that. He must have been a well paid music teacher. A heart shaped diamond would have been expensive, as someone else here has observed.

I think here, by this time (1970's), most theaters played most movies (I am not certain, though).

I see what you're saying. But we don't know where he was coming from ... I think it was an early post (one of Gajonka's?) that said he picked her up for the movie (am I remembering that right?). Maybe he had a job near her home? How big is SI? What's the driving distance, timewise, from one end to the other? Would this have been a big deal? If she didn't drive/have a car, IMHO young people often take these long trips in stride ... when I was there age, driving was recreation. If we got a whim to drive to the beach at 11 PM Friday night, we just did it.

Hi folks! I have been catching up, these older cases always get me as well!
One thing I found while looking around ancestry that probably answers the "single, with dependants" listing on the draft card ...is that in the 1940 census, JL is listed as the son living with his mother and younger sibling.

I am still looking around, and will keep an eye out for new info!

Nice to meet you all!

Very interesting-I wonder if back alley abortions were still happening once it was legalized? I guess there were abortionists who were not doctors doing this for less than a dr would.

I think they were still happening as a regular abortion was probably expensive. And if they had to pay for one already, they may not have had the funds for another and went a cheaper route, thinking if it's legal it's safe.

It was probably like a lot people now who get medical treatments done by people who shouldn't be doing it. Michael Jackson is a good example and I believe Kanya West's mother died having plastic surgery. Priscilla Presley's face was destroyed from getting botox from someone who didn't know what they were doing.

Has anyone been able to go on classmates or any other site, where we could get a picture of the boyfriend. Even any college yearbooks, if the BF was a teacher his picture has to be somewhere in a school yearbook?

There are lots of yearbooks on ancestry, but I have not been able to find either of theirs, and the only Wagner yearbook I see is from the 50's. I might be narrowing things down the wrong way, but will try again later today.

Oh, one other thing I learned while searching census records is that dad was born in NY to polish parents who immigrated in 1902. I am not sure if that has anything to do with how strict the family was, but I do not think is was him that was being referred to as German on the PR. (I think it was German, right?)
Perhaps mom was referring to herself there. ??

EDITED TO CLARIFY:
I realize now that you guys were inferring that SYlvia was born in Germany... Got it.

All moo and all that :)

I did -- when I found the earlier entries and photo of SL. But I found nothing on him. I found Port Richmond HS, but did not find anyone with his last name (or anything close to it). Their lists are based on voluntarily registration though, so that doesn't really tell us anything -- except that he has not signed up. Many people don't.

Looked up the FB page listed in the above New York missing blog

The case was brought to the page back in May. Nothing was uncovered

The good news is, they are aware of this site and thread for Sylvia as of March

The more minds, the better

I was thinking about something that Gajonka said regarding the fiance avoiding having his picture, but not his name in the Long Island newspaper-why would that be after all these years?

Good question

I read somewhere that he is 62, posted in 2012 IIRC

Not sure if we could post it, you would have to ask a mod, I would think that because it is public info you would be able to share it, just a guess though.
