So sad hearing about this crash. Praying for the families and loved ones of all involved.

A lot of questions at this early stage.

> was this a limo bus VS town car?
> one article states limo was going 60mph. Wondering about speed limit?
> one article says limo heading to reception another says wedding.
> father of couple who rented the limo says he didn't know what they were doing. Wouldn't he have known about wedding if two sons in wedding party?
> did all limo passengers perish? No survivors?
> this crash happened yesterday No media reports until 24 hrs later.

Very sad.

Confusing. This story says it was a birthday party. (Source is NY Daily News, fwiw.)

What a nightmare it must be for first responders to piece this all together, too.

Hopefully we’ll learn more shortly from the scheduled press conference.

Prayers to everyone involved in this tragedy!

Based on names I found two of the victims (the ones who said to have rented the limo) wedding website. Not sure if allowed to post. They were married back in June, so this was likely not a wedding party.

I guess we're going through the typical media cycle of the initial reports are incorrect! I went back to my initial post, as it is less than 60 minutes, and I did an edit to add that it might be incorrect information in the article. But at that time, it did say a wedding party.

The story was first reported yesterday afternoon.

My guess is that once the local news outlets went to press, the story is submitted to the Associated Press and other news wires (this is common) — that’s when it really picked up steam.

I’m seeing dozens of stories posted in the last 2-3 hours, most are Associated Press. Most are the same, down to the headlines.

That tells me that AP sent it out on it’s national news wire.

The post date on this story (link below) was more than 15 hours ago. There are earlier ones, I’m pretty sure. Looking now to see what i can find.

Agreed. Early media reports will always update during developing news stories. It’s not uncommon or necessarily even inappropriate. It’s just how it works. They’re going off early police, witness and other first responder statements.

The first report I read said wedding party. Did not even mention the bystanders that were killed. IMO exceptionally bad "reporting" on this horrible accident.

Very sad.

18 died in the limo, while 2 were bystanders.
20 die in upstate New York limousine crash

The road is notoriously dangerous with many accidents happening.

I know the accident happened Saturday afternoon. The death toll was announced earlier today.

That’s sort of an unreasonable expectation, imo. Nobody instantly knows how many or names victims during a mass casualty event of this magnitude.

Police won’t even release that info to the press until it’s been confirmed. I’m confused as to why you see that as a problem.

Looking at photos from the scene, it isn’t surprising at all, to me, that the info wasn’t immediately available.

And if you’re reading a wire story, it might be 15+ hours old, despite what time it was posted to the news website. The first story many read might not actually be the most recent or updated story.

Holy lord. Please know that I’m certainly not here to argue with anyone. I’m just stating facts.

It’s a developing news story.

First responders, police, etc. — their priority is to get the situation under control, not to tell the media everything. That part happens after LE and first responders get the scene secured, can safely start treating victims, put out fires, secure deceased victims, etc., etc., and start sorting things out.

Anyone who can imagine how chaotic and confusing traumatic scenes like this really are, I hope, would understand this.

1:30-2:00PM doesn't sound like a wedding reception. Maybe on their way to afternoon ceremony, if it was, indeed, a wedding party. Homecoming weekend here for both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, as well as many high school homecoming games, dances, parties. Hopefully, press conference will clear things up.

Robert Sumwalt, Chairman of NTSB, is speaking now. They’re leading “multi-disciplinary teams” to study possible vehicle malfunctions, street conditions, and other avenues.

They are working together with local law and state law enforcement as they examine different aspects of this incident.

Including disaster relief efforts during this time.

Will not speculate on cause of crash.

President of NTSB speaking.

NTSB will be there about 5 days, and focus first on perishable information and evidence. Their mission is to not only say what happened, but why it happened.

I took some screenshots but it's not letting me upload them because the files are too large?

Contd...

Christopher Fiore, NY State police:

It’s early in the investigation.

Many family members have yet to be notified, so they’re limited as to what police are able to say at this time.

Only front-seat passengers required by law to wear seatbelts in limo: NYSPD

Two pedestrians were struck.

Will not ID limo company at this time.

Lots of questions about the driver and other things they will not answer right now and they say it's part of the investigation.

Front seat passengers and Driver are required to wear seatbelts, but the people in the back are not. It is unknown at this time who was wearing seatbelts.

Sumwalt: discussing the magnitude

“One of the biggest losses of life we’ve seen in a long, long time.”

Deadliest transportation-related loss of life since 2009.
