It's absolutely true that no amount of money from insurance or a lawsuit would alleviate the crushing pain, but the money would be useful when raising the children who are now without parents to support them. Of course, the family will take on that responsibility, but their burden could be eased a tiny bit with insurance money.

jmo
Additionally, a lawsuit is often a tool used to ensure this kind of thing never ever happens again. Wherever the fault may lie (state/county/city for the roads, owner/operator of company, driver, all of the above) the parties responsible have to face consequences to make the changes necessary to keep people safe.

It’s one of the SONS that is in custody, who was only managing the business, as I understand it. The owner of the business, the father is reported to be in Pakistan for “a medical procedure”

Hmmm. Hard to believe one would go to Pakistan for a medical procedure if you live in the US, or even Dubai
With the cost of healthcare in the US, I would not be surprised. JMO

Thank you for the vote of confidence, though I suspect it would be misplaced. I have virtually no experience with automatic transmission.

In this day and age that’s quite amazing

I wonder if he was driving a company vehicle when he was arrested . . . .

Kinda sorta doubt it.

Exactly. He probably wouldn't take the chance of death by car. Having read about numerous and sundry violations by owners, managers, drivers, how was this company even in business?!?!

Limo company owner's son arrested in deadly New York crash, lawyer says

State officials: Vehicle was not allowed on roads

Hmmm. Limo company's attorney said that the vehicle was deemed road-worthy the week prior to the horrific crash. State officials say that said limousine should not have been on the road. Someone is obviously not telling the truth. Stay tuned...

Hi Everyone,

The next person to make an anti-Muslim post or posts what a Muslim would shout out is going to get an automatic TO.

Thank you,

If one goes on Yelp, the number of companies that have horrible reviews and questionable practices are not small. It is really an industry that needs some oversight. Many poor companies remain in business.

Son of owner of limo in deadly New York crash taken into custody

ALBANY, N. Y. — The son of the owner of limousine company in the deadly crash that killed 20 people on Saturday was taken into custody Wednesday by New York State Police, his lawyer confirmed.

Nauman Hussain was taken into custody earlier Wednesday morning, his attorney Lee Kindlon confirmed to the USA TODAY Network's Albany Bureau.

Hussain ran the Saratoga County limousine company, Prestige Limo, owned by his father, Shahed Hussain...

Great to hear!!! I hope they make his bail so high no one can afford it!!!

He could have gotten the proper license by simply going to the DMV, surrendering his current license, paying for a Class E license and taking a vision test. They would have sent him a new license with an E on it. There is no special knowledge requirements for a Class E license. It's simply an indication that the license holder has paid the fee for it. So that wouldn't have really changed anything.

Get a license to drive a taxi or livery vehicle

For sure it would not have changed the horrible condition of the vehicle. The driver could have had a solid gold, diamond encrusted license and it would have made no difference.

I'm hoping an arrest affidavit will be released today.

I’m glad charges have been filed they are certainly warranted given the magnitude of this tragedy and the immense suffering caused to so many families for greed.

IMO, the driver is as guilty as the owner and his son. He was instructed by law enforcement in August not to drive the vehicle because he wasn’t properly licensed to do so. He ignored the warning. I suspect he would also have been charged with negligent homicide if he had survived the accident.

Son of limo company owner charged with negligent homicide in horrific crash

The son of the owner of the limousine company involved in the deadly crash in upstate New York that left 20 dead has been arrested, according to state police and his lawyer.

He was charged with criminally negligent homicide, police said.

A source familiar with the matter told ABC News that he is being charged because he put a defective vehicle back on the road and hired a driver he knew was not properly licensed.

Snip

The development comes shortly after it was revealed that Lisinicchia had been cited in August for operating the same limousine without the proper license, according to the New York State Police.

Snip

The source said the trooper also took steps to ensure the vehicle was taken off the road, returning it to its original location and directing the driver not to drive the limousine.

Insurance may play a role in the decisions of some people. For those who need to pay a substantial portion out of pocket, India has long been a medical tourism destination for US citizens seeking a large variety of procedures at considerably less expense than in the US.

India offers not only a considerable cost savings, but top rate medical care to those who can afford it. Needless to say, most Indians cannot afford the top level care. Top level care, however, still exists and is available to Indians and foreigners who can afford it. Pakistan is probably a destination as well, though not nearly the same volume as India.

Out of curiosity, I spent time yesterday reading consumer reviews for local limousine companies (north suburban Detroit). Many negative reviews (1 0r 2 out of 5 stars) but none that were related to vehicle safety. Most complaints were customer service issues like substitution of vehicle without warning, inaccurate price quotes, late arrival of driver, unprofessional driver behavior, etc. None of the reviews I read indicated any type of safety concerns.

True, but with parents only in their early 30's the amount of SS benefit accrued will be small.
Hmmmm -- I didn't know that about SS benefits. So the chilrens' benefits will be based on the parents' contributions of their earnings? Did not know that. That could be very tuff for the kids and the remaining survivors.
I received it when my dad died when I was 15 y/o. It continued until I was 21 as long as I was in an accredited college or university through my 21st birthday unless I married, which I did not. It helped put me through college -- It is a great benefit for children who lose a parent.

I never heard of carbon monoxide poisoning inside a normally driven car. It usually happens if car is left running in enclosed space, such as a garage, or when the car is stuck in something such as snow.
You are right about the usual causes of carbon monoxide.

Though I don't think carbon monoxide was a factor, leaks can occur at the exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes (as the other poster alluded to). This can result in some fumes in the driver / passenger compartment.

Also, the vehicle was a post factory modified super extreme stretch limo (these modification are probably not sanctioned by the manufacturer and are done with varying degrees of mechanical skill). This may place additional loads on the engine or exhaust systems that the factory designers did not account for and could make C0-2 leakage more likely.

Thanks for that info, BDE -- those negatives you presented are bad enuff.
Our experience with limo companies -- only 4 or 5 -- were very, very good. Who knew!? Now we do. SMH.
This thing may bust wide open -- and IMO should.
