Here's a bit more info. on stretch limos and seatbelts:

Do Limos Have Seat Belts? - Blog | Luxor Limousine

From above-linked article:

Passenger vehicles designed to seat more than 10 people, that have mainly seats that face sideways, aren’t required to be fitted with seat belts. Stretch limos, and some kinds of party bus, can fall into that category.

I'm enclosing an additional article on the safety of party buses, which includes some statistics on the number of accidents. It is an interesting read.

Looking at the 2nd picture in post #80 it looks like the limo went straight and hit the opposite side of the ravine straight on. That would be like hitting a wall at 60mph throwing everyone in the car forward at 60mph into (the back of) the front seats and windshield.

Unbelievable tragedy. My heart is with all those left behind to grieve.

A family member is being interviewed on CNN. The aunt of her niece, who was celebrating her 30th birthday.

She said her niece texted a friend before she got into the limo. The first limo had broken down, so the company sent another one. The second one wasn't much better. The aunt says her niece texted her friend, joking that she wasn't sure she'd survive her birthday in that limo. "Twenty minutes later, she was dead," her aunt said.

It really is horrific. I'm thinking about the effects of rapid deceleration, and how every collision is really 3 collisions:
  • vehicle with object
  • passengers with interior of vehicle/other passengers
  • internal organs with other body structures

Thank you for the valuable though sad information.

I suppose these are the reasons used by the accident experts who say there can be fatalities even at 35 mph. I do think it is due to the sudden deceleration when there is forward motion right before and then a complete deceleration upon impact.

It literally must be like hitting a concrete wall without warning.

Heartbreaking.

Sounds like this limo company didn’t maintain their cars.

This picture with the red line seems to indicate the probable path of the limo after going thru the stop sign at the intersection, and it leads to that bushy treed area that could be a ravine. Is that where it likely ended up? Seems to correlate with the picture of the vehicle we have seen, no?

If the vehicle was traveling the route indicated by the red line, I wonder how it struck a car or pedestrians in the parking lot?

I added another red line of travel to the photo. Perhaps the limo veered a bit to the left as opposed to traveling a straight route into the brush.

Unbearable tragedy, my heart goes out to all.
Limo Crash Kills 20 in Upstate New York; Nation’s Deadliest Accident in 9 Years
"The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine barreled through the intersection of two highways without stopping, crashing into another vehicle, an unoccupied 2015 Toyota Highlander, before landing in a ravine beyond the road. The two pedestrians were struck near the Apple Barrel and killed.

The loss of life stunned even seasoned investigators, who called it the nation’s deadliest transportation accident since a 2009 plane crash near Buffalo, N.Y., killed 50 people.

“Twenty fatalities is just horrific,” said Robert L. Sumwalt, the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is launching a comprehensive investigation. “I’ve been on the board for 12 years and this is one of the biggest losses of life that we’ve seen in a long, long time.”

I watched CNN also. She also said in her text, "It was making clunking noises, it was rusty and holes in it, the limo did not look good."

In a split second, hundreds of lives permanently and horrifically changed by an accident that killed 20 people enjoying their day. I so want to blame someone or something. I know that is not within my power or place though. I can only try to concentrate my energies on praying for/thinking of those who are in unimaginable pain and will never be the same. May they find the strength to face the days, months, years ahead that are changed forever.
