The limousine involved in this weekend's deadly crash failed its New York State DMV inspection last month and should not have been on the road, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.

The crash on Saturday killed 20 people in Schoharie, a small town west of Albany.

Officials said the driver of the limousine also did not have the appropriate driver’s license to be operating that vehicle.

Looks like the group was on the road in the bus and then it broke down.

The vehicle had been brought in as a replacement after a bus meant to transport the party broke down.

It belonged to Prestige Limousines and Lisinicchia was one of two drivers employed by the company.

Abeling said the group had rented 'some kind of bus' to take them to the party venue, but it had broken down. The same company then sent a limo to take the group the rest of the way.

all of us law and order folks have learned a lot lately!

Apparently, it is really common for felons to flip , and then serve as FBI informants or work (when guilty, with prosecutors) in order to get their criminal sentences reduced.

It does make sense tho - when guilty of felonies - might as well!

Experts said such modified vehicles face less regulations than typical passenger cars and often remove features intended to keep occupants safe.

The horrific limousine crash that killed 18 people celebrating a birthday and two pedestrians over the weekend in upstate New York renewed questions over the safety and regulation of the stretch vehicles.

The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine involved in the deadly crash was a "chopped vehicle, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday, meaning it had been cut from a passenger vehicle and extended.

The limousine also did not have a certification that "it was extended in a way that was compliant with federal law," Cuomo said...

I'm afraid this is no surprise at all. Driver licencing fraud is a huge problem with some immigrant and ethnic communities in the UK. It's predominantly a Muslim problem and a Pakistani Muslim problem at that. It's quite common for one male to obtain a driving licence and to start driving a taxi, but then for various brothers and cousins to drive in shifts, producing the single licence if ever challenged.

It's also a problem, unfortunately, that many Muslims hold local secular law in contempt, observing only Sharia. At least, this is a problem in the UK and may or may not be the same in the US.

75% through the autopsies. Confirmed the driver did not have the proper license (more than 15 passenger vehicle requires bus licensing). Confirmed Prestige Limousine as the company, in Saratoga. Asked anyone who received calls or texts from limo passengers to contact them.

They have contacted the limo company owner. They do believe another vehicle was supposed to be used that day. Confirmed that the vehicle used as a substitute had failed past inspections.
