The fiancee of a 46-year-old New York man missing since his kayak overturned on the Hudson River earlier this month has been arrested. Angelika Graswald of Poughkeepsie faces murder charges.

Graswald claimed she was kayaking with Vincent Viafore when his kayak capsized on the evening of April 19 off Cornwall-On-Hudson in Orange County. Graswald, 35, told police she called 911, then tried to help. She said she fell out of her own kayak and was later rescued by a boater.

Police searched for several days without finding Viafore, who wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

Are you referring to the skyline photo SurfieTX? I'm on the West Coast, and the timestamp I see (which may be adjusted to the viewer by Facebook) shows 10:12 a.m.



It's still eerie, though, because it shows the bridge and the night skyline. His cover photo of his silhouette looking out to at the water kinda took my breath away, too. JMO

Intriguing. Presumably there is still no body so the police must have something else... Blood at another location? An eyewitness that saw something out on the water... or maybe saw her towing out an empty kayak...

Viafore's Facebook page has numerous pictures of him engaged in water activities, and on Jan. 26, Viafore described his wedding plans to a friend.

"The weddings (sic) going to be in Europe on the Baltic Sea, but we plan to do a Hudson River Cruise party" with friends, Viafore wrote.

Graswald posted a number of public Facebook photos of herself and Viafore since April 19. One is captioned, "I miss you, my love..."

Graswald has posted on Facebook about Viafore since his disappearance, including a message as recent as this past Monday that said, "Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near. Still loved, still missed and very dear."

The day after the incident, Graswald posted a message on Facebook asking for prayers and thanking those who reached out to her.

"Miracles ARE possible. The authorities are doing everything they can. We do not need anyone else getting hurt, as it is very dangerous out there, especially without daylight," she wrote. "Please, no questions at this point, we're doing everything we can. We will find him."

“Initially, we believed her to be a survivor of a tragic accident,” said state police Maj. Patrick Regan. But as police pieced together the situation, there were “some inconsistencies” in Graswald’s story which made them suspicious.

Statements she made to police Wednesday were catalysts for her arrest, Regan said, but he wouldn’t elaborate on what those statements were, a possible motive or the manner in which she allegedly killed Viafore.
