NYC - Body found tied up in basement after elderly couple killed in fire - 9 Sept 2025

IMO
It has always been like this.
Every generation idealizes times of their youth.
The most important thing is to be careful.
Be vigilant of one's surroundings.

There are crimes which hurt me the most:
- against children
- against old people
- against animals.

Meaning - against the vulnerable.

This murderer disgusts me.
Throw the book at him
&
Throw away the key!

He could lead a nice life, he seems young, fit and strong - what else is needed?
He could have found an honest job and earn money like other normal people.
Well, he chose to torture, murder and steal from the elderly.

I'm not sure a person can sink any lower.

I think it is more than that. I think the perpetrator is sadistic and enjoyed setting them on fire.

I think he has crossed the line when one can expect minimal clemency from our usually compassionate society.

You're likely right. He has seemingly admitted what he did.
Warning: details are disturbing.

OMG 😳
I regret reading the details.
This is too much.

I cannot imagine what the poor family of the couple are going through :(
Therapies are needed IMO

I have no words to express my horror.

Rest in Peace now 🕯️

I should've put a warning - I'll go back to do that. I found it disturbing too. :(

Rest in peace.

Another one who should have never been let out prison…

Absolutely horrific. This couple, they were in their late 70's, and agreed to help this guy by letting him charge his cellphone. I feel so terrible for their paramedic son who found his mom and dad in this manner.

I don't know if it would have made any difference but I wonder why the parole officer assigned to this career criminal didn't intervene when this loser didn't register as a level 3 smex offender as required.
Quoting myself because the original article I read made it seem that not registering as a sex offender would have been a violation of his parole. I was wrong. That would have been true until 2022 but not anymore. Parole reforms were enacted in 2022 called 'Less is More'.

What a fitting name. Less is more (violence on innocent people).

You're a whole lot nicer than I am. Where he needs to be has no key since one you're in, there's no way out. (Unless he becomes a zombie.)

Yeah, that was the couple's big mistake, ugh.

My new philosophy as a New Yorker; never do anything for anyone, lol!

It wasn't the couple's mistake. No blame can be attributed to them for acting in a humanitarian manner toward a person in need. The big mistake was entirely that of the monstrous criminal, Jamel McGriff.

It seems that former info was wrong.
Later report - sent to this thread with NYP link - says the criminal followed the victim to the backyard and when denied access to the house, forced his way.

He obviously preyed on the elderly.

I guess there will be no trial, as he confessed, right?

And that, considering he is a recidivist and murderer, he will never leave prison.

Absolutely horrendous what this elderly couple went through from the start to atrocious finish. My heart aches for them.

I can't even imagine what their son went through and is going through after finding his parents at their home.

Not necessarily. Even after confessing to a crime during arrest or questioning, many accused plead not-guilty to crimes.
Pleading not-guilty may allow the defendant to (for example)
  • Force the prosecution to prove every element of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt
  • Negotiate a plea bargain
Not sure what the case is with this fellow though. He almost seemed proud of his crime and he may be one of those types that prefer the institution/familiarity/stability of life in jail.

🐄 Moo, he appears a prime candidate for the death penalty. Texas does technically retain the death penalty, but it's seldom used these days.
