OH OH - ANTHONY SOWELL, 11 bodies unearthed at his Cleveland home, 2007-09 *dies in prison 2021*

  • #261
An accused serial killer was not granted bond during a court arraignment Wednesday morning.

Anthony Sowell, 50, is charged with five counts of aggravated murder as well as rape, felonious assault and kidnapping.

The public defender asked for bond in the case but the judge said Sowell is a danger to society. NewsChannel5 learned in the court appearance that Sowell has been on unemployment for about two years after being laid off from a job. He also has a pacemaker.

The case will be given to the grand jury.

I agree. Something here stinks! I mean that in the literal sense too!

From what people on the comment sections in the local news, there is a sausage processing shop next door, or something like that. Sounds as if there is a lot of smells going on around the area. I read that a neighbor said that there was a smell a while back or something like that..

In defense of the neighbors, if my neighbor had a "weird smell' coming from his house, and was also a convicted rapist, I'd be afraid of reporting him too - what happens if they don't find bodies and have nothing to charge him with? The neighbors might fear retaliation. It's like poking a sleeping bear. (or however that expression goes). They may have been afraid of antagonizing him and thus becoming his next victim. Not that that justifies it, but they might have just wanted him to stay the hell away from them - 'you don't bother me, i won't bother you' kind of thing.

I honestly don't know what a decomposing body is supposed to smell like - so I probably would not have thought of it myself. I would think he was a hoarder or something.

I can't understand why no one thought the smell was not from human remains. Why didn't someone call LE to have the odor investigated. This really puzzles me.

Well, I hope this will make people more aware of any possible strange odors and involve LE to find the source of it.

Maybe the Cleveland LE should consider calling in some help if they can only work so many hours.

They could call in the county sheriff's dept. or FBI for help, hope they do. Cleveland is another city that's having lots of budget problems and they've made a lot of cuts in the department.

I wonder if he was on any more mainstream dating websites? Even so, this makes me want to reconsider using even "normal" dating websites.

I know! The Internet has become a goldmine for predators - they can do everything anonymously now, test the waters to see how vulnerable their target is, basically master the art of deception. They can even find sites where people will tell them exactly what they're willing to do! (i.e. alt-fetish sites) and people will put themselves out there unknowingly to be victimized. The 'net has created a whole new world and way of meeting new people, for whatever purpose you intend, in whatever persona or facade you choose to present, and to pick and choose who interact with.

(bolded by me) - wow, that takes balls to ask for!

why in he!! would the PD ever think this guy was gonna be bonded out? and what difference does a pacemaker make? didn't seem to stop him from strangling multiple people, which takes some physical strength and intent to actually do, now did it PD?

I am sure they have to go through the motions of a defense. Wouldn't want it later overturned on ineffective counsel. JMO of course.

Finally i'm off today and i'm catching up. Yes I saw that on NG that I taped. OMG. These poor families. Didn't LE ever think gee we got all these females missing here, look at all these posters, something is not right???? What the heck...

I really think this could be used as another example of the "missing white women get more media attention" theory. It's unfortunate, but I can recall many times looking at missing persons lists and the cases I was familiar with were all of white women, while the ones I had never heard and the profile had little to no information or newspaper articles on was usually that of an African American woman. . :-(

I thought this part of the article was very interesting (in bold, by me):

A review of police reports and court records shows Sowell struck up Sowell was raised in East Cleveland. He joined the Marines in 1978, at age 18, and served eight years in North Carolina, Okinawa, Japan and California.

Police in Coronado, Calif., are looking into whether Sowell could have committed an unsolved rape from 1979 when he was stationed there, Police Chief Louis Scanlon said.

"We are researching this and looking for information," Scanlon said.

this guy could be responsible for rapes/murders in NC, California, and even Japan!
this is just starting to unfold, I bet the final victim count (including the rape victims who he didn't kill) will be much longer...

The public defender knew that no bond would be granted. It was just a "standard procedure" action.

I am just catching up on this. Amazing. I am surprised it is not getting more press as this could be shaping up to be one of the worst serial killers in the country.

I instantly thought of Fred and Rose West whose house was also a house of horrors. Police unearthed several bodies in their backyard, including the body of their own 19 yr old daughter. The Wests kidnapped and sometimes held their victims for days and days tortuing them before finally killing them, dismembering them and burying them in the backyard. http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/weird/west/index_1.html

I'm confused about this house. It looks like what appears to be a two-family but I have not heard any mention of someone else living in the building. In some shots of the house there appear to be two front doors, side by side and I definitely saw a shot of two mailboxes attached to the wall- one over the other. Did he live in both homes? Was on vacant and that is where he stored the bodies?

The home has been in the family for a long time. It was originally owned by his grandfather. I think that he has been there by himself. The area is a very depressed part of town with a lot of abandoned homes and buildings. I think that they have mentioned that the house next door is empty too.

It does appear to be a two-family.

Yep, definately a typical Cleveland two-family home.

IIRC, there are three apartments in this home. AS lived on the 3rd floor, where the bodies were found. At least one of the victims that made it out of that house said she was taken to an apartment on the second floor that contained only a chair and a blanket. IIRC, both recent surviving victims were taken to the second floor first. The main floor, I believe was his step-mother's residence.

Finally i'm off today and i'm catching up. Yes I saw that on NG that I taped. OMG. These poor families. Didn't LE ever think gee we got all these females missing here, look at all these posters, something is not right???? What the heck...Just now on Fox a reporter just said theres so many abandon houses on this block, one house is right across the street. They (the reporters) want to go search it, because LE won't. WHAT??? I think we will find out he killed more then 10.

Sorry but can anyone tell me how the lady met this creep in September? Did she go there on her own? Or did he kidnap her?

I'm not sure but I believe that the woman that has come forward and talked on camera about her attack is the victim from Sept. She has stated that she was a neighbor of AS for around 2 years and would never have expected this. She said she escaped by talking him down and I believe she is also the one that was reported to have promised him $50 if he let her go. She said she knew him and knew his girlfriend, which struck me because it was the first I had heard he had a girlfriend. I wonder where she is? Is she possibly the one from the Oct. 20 incident where both she and AS told FD, LE and hospital staff the same story of her keys falling off the balcony and her falling off trying to retrieve them? He rode with this woman to the hospital...

I do know that by all accounts I've heard from neighbors, LE and victims, he would lure women with offers of beer and drugs. I'm assuming he was able to convince at least a couple to come to him via his "dating" site. The women he would have met on there were there for the same thing, to "date", so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the victims aren't from the immediate area. I hope there aren't anymore victims yet to be discovered, but I'm not counting on it. Just praying for it to be true.

Can anyone refresh my memory on when the father died and the step mother went into the nursing home?

Segerna (stepmom) was moved to a nursing home "around a year ago" according to neighbors. My guess is it was sometime during the summer of 2008 because Allen, AS older brother, said he saw her at a cookout in early summer 08 and never heard from her again after that, which is why he was concerned for her safety early on until he was finally able to locate her safe and in a nursing home as reported on 11/2. Thomas, AS father, passed away in 2003, before AS was released from prison. I have to say, I was surprised that Segerna was located safe. Elated, but surprised. I would still like to know for how long she was married to the elder Sowell? I'm curious if she was in AS' life from an early age.

Speaking of cookouts....I saw an interview with a neighbor saying that AS was a friendly guy that would hold neighborhood cookouts and just had one on his birthday (which is in August). I don't know about you and I don't mean to gross anyone out, but if I had attended one of those cookouts, I would seriously be wondering what I had really eaten. I hope he wouldn't do that, but as sick as this animal is, I wouldn't put it past him. Although, he did surprise me with the humanity he showed towards his stepmother by sparing her. I was wrong in thinking he wouldn't, so maybe I'm wrong in my cookout theory, as well. I sure hope so.

I found a interesting piece on Gloria Walker from a dreamer web site.

I don't know if I would rule out Amanda Berry or Georgina DeJesus...The Charley Project says that they could be related, possibly forced into prostitution (so not killed immediately). See last paragraph on Ashley Summers' page...

Didn't LE ever think gee we got all these females missing here, look at all these posters, something is not right????

Yes, when I watched NG, I wondered about that too. No one made the connection among all the missing posters that canvassed the neighborhood and said.... "hmmmm"? Or LE didn't make a connection that there were so many missing women (some missing from this year) from a small region? And although it has been suggested that these women may have had troubles of their own, it seems that according to the descriptions from relatives, these women who became missing were people who were in regular contact with their families, and not necessarily people who dropped out of contact with their family for long periods of time. Suffice it say, it is sad that no one made the connections before now.... Of course we will learn more about the link between the missing and Sowell as the case moves along.

More points from NG last night:
  • The victim who fell out of the window was bound and gagged. When Sowell fell asleep, she removed the gag and was able to unbind herself. She jumped out of the window because she thought that it was the quickest route out of the house.
  • Fire fighters are expected to return today to tear down the walls to search for more victims.

What a house of horrors. :(

I wonder if he might have lured women - even from out of town - with a promise of a free place to live in one of those apartments.

It just occurred to me after seeing what you posted about women being taken to the empty 2nd floor apartment first.
