im thinkin mom had some issues and dad covered for her. maybe she was beating Ashley and just went ham and took it too far. idk why he would continue to cover for her. we may find out at trial.

9-12 update: Liang Zhao, Dad takes a plea deal and will testify against mom. He will be sentenced to 12 years after the trial against his wife ends. He pleaded guilty to endangering children, tampering with evidence, obstructing justice and gross abuse of a corpse. Zhao will not be formally sentenced until after Chen's trial, which is scheduled to begin October 16.
10/13 Update: A mother will go on trial in January instead of next week for the death of her 5-year-old who was found dead in the family’s Jackson Township restaurant. Motions seeking an insanity defense for Mingming Chen and to suppress evidence have delayed the trial until Jan. 26. In court papers filed late last week, Judge Chryssa Hartnett granted a defense request to change her plea to not guilty by reason of insanity while ordering an independent evaluation of Chen’s mental condition at the time. The insanity defense is tied to battered woman syndrome. From court records it’s unclear precisely what role battered woman syndrome plays in the defense’s case.

So the contention is that she was insane because she's a battered woman and killed her child because she was insane? Dad's throwing her under the bus and now she's gonna try to throw him under as well.

I can only imagine the type of family dynamics those poor children were living in.

The Stark County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday issued a news release saying Mingming Chen, 30, will be sentenced to 22 years in prison and then be deported. Officials with the prosecutor’s office said the release was emailed early by mistake.

Chen has a final pretrial hearing scheduled for Friday morning in Stark County Common Pleas Court. She is charged with murder, two counts of endangering children, obstructing justice, tampering with evidence and gross abuse of a corpse.

I could not find what I had read in the past, but here is an update for today:

Ashley lived in New York with her grandparents until October of 2015. Chen in her interview with investigators said the girl refused to listen and would push her sister when she didn’t get her way.

Court documents accuse Ashley’s parents of abusing her on multiple occasions from the time she moved in with them until her death more than a year later and say the girl suffered from blows to the head and torso.

In court Friday, she pleaded guilty to a reduced count of involuntary manslaughter along with the remaining original charges. She was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Has there been any updates on where the sister is living now? Is she still in custody of Stark County? I recall the funeral was held in New York.

Judge David Nist said the county would care for the girl because no family could be located who would take her in. Zhao’s family is mostly in New York, court officials said, and Chen’s family is in China.
