[Judge Hartnett:]. She said no number of years would constitute a long enough prison term but that avoiding a graphic trial to preserve Ashley’s memory for her sister, who is old enough to understand what is happening, was desirable. Hartnett added she felt comfort knowing the couple’s living daughter was “far better off” without having Chen as her parent.

Stark County Assistant Prosecutor Dennis Barr said Hartnett summed up the state’s sentiments best.
“This was a tragic case, but part of the reason that we did this was we know she’ll be in prison long enough that when she gets out, [sister-J.] — her other daughter — will be a grown adult and able to protect herself,” Barr said.
[Sister-J.] is living with relatives in New York, but Stark County Job and Family Services still has temporary custody, said Jerry Coleman, assistant deputy director of legal services for the agency.

Chilling video shows Ohio mom admitting she killed 5-year-old daughter

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Newly released video shows a 30-year-old Ohio mother telling an investigator she beat her 5-year-old daughter to death and then help her husband hide the child's body, according to WJW.

Ming Ming Chen was brought into a police interrogation room last January after investigators found the body of 5-year-old Ashley Zhao hidden in a Jackson Township restaurant owned by Chen and her husband, Liang Zhao.

Ming acts like it is no big deal that she killed Ashley because she couldn't run the restaurant and take care of her children. imo

From the video she says: “I told my husband to take care of it.” it? It? She is a little girl named Ashley.... not an it! Even if she has a poor grasp of the English language, the child is not an ‘it”. She does not seem at all despondent and shows no emotion at all except to say “I don’t want to kill Ashley, but, you can’t control yourself sometimes” . Really?

I would really like to see the entire interview ... this just seems so wrong and uncaring. :tears:

I agree....22 isn't enough. What a horrible "mother."

I agree. 22 is not enough. I sincerely hope she is deported immediately after her sentence so her daughter never has to see her horrible face again

Hope another prisoner can't control themselves either! She is disgusting. No remorse, no love lost to her. I pray I never understand how you can give birth to a child, and then murder said child. I wonder if Ashley had been a boy if she would have murdered then? Does her culture of girls being less than have any bearing on her lack of caring? Yet another illegal alien. When in the heck is our government going to start checking up on people that came here on a visa, and stayed when the visa ran out? The rules are already in place, enforce them!

Earlier this year, Chen’s husband also accepted a plea agreement that dropped the murder charge he faced on the condition he testify against his wife at her trial. He has not been sentenced but is expected to receive a 12-year prison sentence with the possibility of early release after six years.

Yes, Mom is a monster, but ...there was another adult in the home/business that could have prevented Ashley's death!!! He could have called those same relatives in New York and taken her back to them.

Judge: Ashley Zhao’s father failed her

As a result of those actions, Stark County Common Pleas Judge Chryssa Hartnett sentenced Zhao Wednesday to 12 years in prison. The term was specified in a plea agreement Zhao reached with county prosecutors in September when he admitted to two counts of endangering children, both second-degree felonies. One is connected to the events last January and the other linked to the abuse the girl previously suffered, Schnellinger said.

A murder charge was dismissed against Zhao.

My gosh ... just no emotions from either parent. I don’t understand. They never bonded with this little one at all and were ready to just discard her little body.

Another thing ... Surely the father has been here in the States long enough to know how unlikely it wiuld be to cover up something like this.

Thanks for all the links and commentary. This is a sad case. I watched the father's interrogation and the way he describes Ashley, she may have been a special needs child. The bizarre posture, difficulty learning, etc may have just meant she needed some extra help.

I can't find the mother's interview anywhere. If anyone sees it, please post a link?

Anyone else finding it strange that the DA still hasn't released the autopsy in this case? And that we can't find Chen's confession anywhere but we can find the husband's? These 2 gave conflicting accounts of how Ashley died. They're in prison and we don't really know what they did. I don't remember if I'm allowed to post links but two Ohio news outlets posted articles complaining about lack of access even though they filed the appropriate motions in court.

If they're media you can post the links.

Here's one of the articles. Has anyone actually seen an article that references the autopsy report? How did Ashley die? The father said the wife was slamming the girl's head on the floor. The wife said she punched her.
Also, what does Chen say in that video clip? She wants her husband to kill her?

I'm sure they're both probably guilty. It's just strange with all the secrecy and Chen's allegations against the husband back when she changed her plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.
