attorney Miss Rouch (sp.?) requesting court appointed attorney for father, will take the mother on as a client. Mother may need an interpretator.

Prelim January 19 at 11:00 for both

Jake Will appointed for father. He has been in America for 30+ years. owns no property in Stark County

bond 5 million dollars. One subject to deportation, one has relatives in (New York?)

lost my coverage .....

personal opinion - I can't stand this couple - they look so freakin blank in their mugshots. no remorse, nothing. they make my blood boil.

One was "subject to a deportation order", the other has family in New York.

that's bits and pieces of what I heard.

It's what I heard too, fwiw

bond 10% or cash assurity

parents do not appear on January 19

Prelim hearing is a probable cause, but possible there may not be a Grand Jury hearing

Parents will be transported back to Stark County Jail

Mom looks totally blank. Dad looks like he's holding his emotions. There are red flush marks on his neck. I've seen guys that have that when they are upset or embarrassed.

I still get the vibe that the mother isn't mentally fit. For now I'm reserving judgement of the Father. I'm getting something different from him. There are so many different nuances with other cultures it's hard to try and understand his thought processes regarding first trying to revive his daughter, then resigning himself to help his wife. This is my opinion only of course. He covered up a crime and needs to be punished.

I totally agree with you. From the mugshots it seems the dad is holding back his feelings.

I just had a look at the Ang FB page now. Good God there is all kinds of wrong on there going back YEARS.

I read the business FB earlier. Sometimes he would close the restaurant on short notice for 3 days at a time because his wife was "sick" and couldn't go in.
He said in some of the older posts that she wasn't sleeping well and having trouble getting out of bed.

It's odd that he put a lot of personal details about his family on a business FB page.

I just got around to reading it too. The wife was unwell a lot, or she didn't want to go to work and the husband was run off his feet and apologetic. Idk what to make of it.

Do we know which one was the subject of a deportation order?

Like a plea for help maybe?

He admitted on that page he wasn't sure what a business FB page purpose was, so he said he would use it to post closings and such (not quoting). Perhaps he didn't understand that there was no need professional to post personal reasons for closings? I think they were in over their heads working everyday from dawn to probably midnight. Yuck I would never want to own a pizzeria for this reason. A friend did and they wound up selling at a loss just to get their lives back. Somewhere I read that his parents had a successful Chinese restaurant for years in same strip mall. He opened when they retired. Perhaps there was tremendous pressure on him to succeed?

All conjecture, and moo. I still feel more sad than mad here so far.

Earlier article suggested the Father gave the story that Mom hit her twice and he tried to revive her, etc etc. I don't recall hearing that the Mom herself has said anything at all.
forgiven :therethere: It happens to a lot of us at some point.

In the arraignment, it was said the mother speaks little English --- can only speak a bit socially. I wonder if she understood what was being said during the arraignment. The lawyer did say they may need a translator in
order to work with her

Around here, many of the Chinese restaurants are totally staffed by family members. Once established, they occasionally hire Americans. I have not found anything stating how long they have owned the business, or how long they have been in US. If they did not have family nearby to help, I can see them being overworked and exhausted trying to do it all by just the two of them. Although I do recall an uncle of the father who came to try to search ... did any of the extended family pitch in to work there, ever?

Judge Eddie Elum explained he set a high bond because one of the defendants could face deportation and the other has relatives in New York. Preliminary hearings for both have been set for 11 a.m. Jan. 17 in Massillon Municipal Court.

Neither showed any emotion, Chen lowered her head as the judge talked to her.

Cristin Roush of the Stark County Public Defender's Office represented the pair. She said Chen spoke conversational English and likely would need a translator in future proceedings. Zhao, she said, spoke English. He told the judge he has lived in the United States for more than 20 years. Elum appointed Jacob Will as Zhao's attorney.

STARK COUNTY
Chinese restaurant repeatedly closed for illness by parents charged in Ashley Zhao's death

"I'm sorry. We are not open right now," a post on Ang's Cuisine Facebook page declared. "We will try to open later on during the day, if she (wife) feels better. I will post, if anything changes."

This was a recurring theme for Ang's Cuisine that stretches back several years. Scrolling through their Facebook page shows a large portion of posts were related to closing the restaurant.

"I'm sorry, we are not open today. My wife is still not feeling well," another post on a different date stated. "She will try some gas-x today and see how it goes. I am too worn out from opening up by myself for the pass 2 days. We will be closed today."
