I don't believe it's a case of the general public not caring, but rather a combination of things, mostly lack of really good exposure and details.
The things that are set up to spread awareness about Cheryl don't really spread awareness but rather serve more as support or a reminder to those who already know about her case.
As an example, The green #CherylStrong yard signs. That's all the info that is on those signs. There is no photo of Cheryl, it does not say MISSING PERSON. To a passerby, it could easily be mistaken as a sign for someone who is battling liver cancer vs. someone from the community who is missing.
The main source for obtaining such signs were through Cheryl's Missing Facebook page (again, someone would already have to have the knowledge of Cheryl in order to be on the FB page) and people had to purchase them vs being donated by a local business or person, so that tends to lead to mostly family and friends obtaining signs; a small group of people which = a small # of signs.
Family and friends are often key in keeping their family member's/friend's name in the news. Organizing searches, vigils, fundraisers, flyer distributions, interviews, etc. Have any of those things happened very recently?
(*My intention is not to nitpick efforts, btw*)
Anothert thought in terms of greater or wider news coverage, which those close to her may be understandably reluctant to consider, is how news-worthy her story is currently vs. how news-worthy it could be. It has the potential to be at least a mildly salacious story, which reporters often salivate over, yet no one seems to have taken that angle. Middle aged mother drops daughter off at high school, isn't heard from again. Car found at Kroger the following day is and has been the main narrative. That grabs our attention because we follow missing persons cases regularly, but it doesn't grab and keep the attention of most people. Details such as the open marriage, Cheryl originally allegedly supporting their relationship and being friends. His taking the girlfriend and daughter to Florida instead of Cheryl, Cheryl seeing other men as well, the impending divorce he didn't see coming, GF now living in Cheryl's home. Their being coworkers, etc etc All of those types of things are what grabs people's attention and keeps it circulating in the news longer because there is a large element of drama and a marriage that didn't fit within the "typical parameters" of a marriage.
Exposure. It either spreads the word or puts more pressure on LE or both.
Though if the case truly has gone cold, not sure what could be done at this point or what more exposure would accomplish; re-examining the case, having another detective take a look, or conducting more organized searches perhaps?
Just random thoughts/opinions.
