By Colorado Army National Guard Spc. Bethany Fehringer, 104th Public Affairs Detachment
FORT IRWIN, Calif. (8/7/12) -- Soldiers of the Colorado Army National Guards 220th Military Police Company, 147th Brigade Support Battalion, and other units at the gathered at Forward Operating Base Santa Fe Aug. 7 to participate in a memorial ceremony to honor and remember a fallen Soldier.
Spc. Deanna Ballman of the 220th MP Company, a mother of two, was found dead on Aug. 1 in Ohio.
The 220th and 147th are at FOB Santa Fe, part of the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., to conduct their annual training.
The memorial service was organized by the 147th especially for the 220th to provide a time and place for their Soldiers to come together and support each other during their time of mourning.
I could always tell there was a little bit more behind the facade that she would allow people to see, and I think thats what I will always remember of her, said
Capt. Wesley Kvasnicka, company commander of the 220th. She might be quiet, and she might blend in to the crowd, but if you start talking about family or her children, she was vibrant and really came to life. She was a unique person.
I think the company will remember her like we always remember our friends and our Soldiers. Its that unique relationship that you have with your fellow Soldiers, said Kvasnicka. So as soon as we brought the company together and told everybody, the outpouring of support for each other was amazing. Soldiers who were brand new to the unit were struck by the emotion of everything.
I dont think well ever forget Spc. Ballman.
I just want to express my sincere condolences to her family and my gratitude for giving their daughter to the military, said Ortega.
She was a good Soldier. I know she was a good mother, and God bless.
