An animal rescue group has been left 'absolutely heartbroken' after one of its dogs was killed while left in the care of inmates as part of a prisoner rehabilitation program.

Joseph's Legacy said its 'worst nightmare happened' after Evie, a four-year-old German Shepherd and Norwegian Elkhound cross, was found dead in a cell at Warren Correctional Institution in Lebanon, Ohio.

The institution, which houses 1,365 inmates, is a high security jail which contains adult mail prisoners – including murderers – aged over 18 on a 45-acre site.

This has really upset me. I hope they prosecute the inmates who did this for animal abuse and remove any privileges they may have. Rest In Peace Evie #justiceforevie

Oh no...That makes me really sad.

It's pretty clear in this case which were the animals.

Agreed. Animals have been used very successfully in a number of rehabilitation schemes. There's a well established one in the UK which takes young offenders from the inner cities and introduces them to horses, teaching them stable craft and basic riding.

That is unbelievably horrid!
I wish they could be charged as if Evie was a police dog.

Did no one hear her yelping?!
This was a high security facility, what were these inmates convicted of?
If they were there for murder and would be in for life why was rehabilitation even an issue?

I am so upset about this. I am a total dog person. I am also a defense paralegal. I know there are good people trying to change and innocent people convicted of crimes incarcerated who could absolutely use the benefit of a dog, who absolutely miss their own dogs. We have an innocent client right now who is awaiting trial in jail while his beloved dog dies, he'd give ANYTHING to have had the opportunity to have Evie! Unbelievable. I wish the penalties could be harsher for this than they will be!

This makes me so angry and so heartsick for that poor precious dog. So I will hope and pray fervently that some dog loving prisoners will take it upon themselves to visit some well justified karma upon the evil SOB’s who did this.

OMG, I can't even read this but I hope they get what they deserve and then some

I took only one brief glimpse at Evie's photo but I can't actually read the news report. We need to be aware of vicious acts against all living creatures, but... mistreatment of children and animals break me.

I hope This doesn’t ruin the program going forward. I know So many prisons and prisoners have seen tremendous success with programs like this. Heartbreaking. If there is anyone that could use the unconditional love of an animal, it certainly is a prisoner

Many thanks for all your replies everyone. I will post any updates I see about this horrendous act of cruelty. I understand how useful and important a program like this can be in rehabilitating prisoners but I don’t want animals put in danger either it is very difficult.

This story breaks my heart. I’m going for some doggie treats right now for my two precious loyal best friends as they lay beside my bed watching over me.

Rescue group involved said they won't provide any more dogs for the program and I can't say that I blame them.

They are criminals and they are there for a reason. Obviously at least some are violent, it's a high security prison. So I guess I am not surprised.

There is something wrong with people who are cruel to animals. No rehabilitation potential there.

I shouldn’t be surprised either. So why am I so shocked and hurt? Violent criminals or not; it’s not human.
