OH - Evie the rescue dog beaten to death by prisoners in Ohio prison

I wonder what the screening process is for matching the animals with their inmate

They are criminals and they are there for a reason. Obviously at least some are violent, it's a high security prison. So I guess I am not surprised.

Plus it is 1000+ people and probably pretty crowded; long-term confinement does not make people any better.

This is sickening and horrifying. I am heartbroken :( Ugh.....sick at my stomach. These monsters.....this program, while I did read about it and was encouraged, needs to be ended AT ONCE. These monsters cannot have access to our most innocent creatures. I just can't....I just take this.

Rescue group involved said they won't provide any more dogs for the program and I can't say that I blame them.

I don’t blame them either you would be worried sick about this horrendous tragedy happening again.

There is something wrong with people who are cruel to animals. No rehabilitation potential there.

Individuals that harm children and animals can’t be rehabilitated I agree. You have to be a real monster to harm the most vulnerable in society.

My guess it is not very good if the prisoners killed an animal placed in their care.

Me too. I wonder why the animal would be left alone with the inmate. Maybe that’s the norm, but it may need to be changed.

The animals have to be kept somewhere, I presume it's left in the cell with the inmates? Otherwise where are the animals going to be kept?

I don’t know why I assumed there was some kind of centralized station where they were kept except during certain times since it was an institutional program.

I would imagine the kind of prisoners requiring rehabilitation into society would be ones convicted of assault or worse.

It can’t be the best environment for the dogs being in the prison and I mean no criticism of the rescue organisation when I say this. I went to prison once for a job interview in HR and it was a grim thirty minute experience, it was so bad that I turned the job offer down.

This tragedy occurred on the 25th of August and the animal rescue charity waited till yesterday to release the information because they were waiting on the autopsy results. I sincerely hope charges are coming in the coming days and that there is now no chance of the prisoner(s) involved being released back into society.

Okay I'm more rational now. I've always been a bit fan of these programs. The inmates just love these dogs and get so attached. I've cried more than once watching documentaries about them! If this was an inmate then it was a special kind of evil person.

I'm waiting to hear about camera footage. I'm curious that we haven't heard anything yet. There was an inmate beaten to death here recently and within a couple of days other inmates had gotten word out about what happened. Because of the video footage and witnesses. Entire thing was recorded, they were actually able to count the number of times he hit the guy. It was awful.

I'm surprised there are not leaks about this. There would only be 1 or 2 people in a cell. Short suspect list. Yet no leaks about who it was? I very much hope this crime was captured on video and that the video hasn't been lost. I want to be very sure that Evie gets justice... and that can only happen if the correct suspect is identified.

They enrolled her in the program at Warren Correctional and last week got the call that the dog had been found dead in her cell.

According to the Facebook post, a necropsy showed Evie died from blunt force trauma to her abdomen, causing her liver to hemorrhage and damaging a kidney.

The organization also stated that its concerns about the program had recently risen — but not to the point that they had removed Evie from it.

“Last week, we got a dog and she was all of a sudden fearful, so we were investigating and just making sure everything was good, but you’re talking just a few days later, this happened,” Joseph’s Legacy President Meg Melampy said.

I just wonder if the other dog had been abused in some way but not as severely.

An animal rescue group has been left 'absolutely heartbroken' after one of its dogs was killed while left in the care of inmates as part of a prisoner rehabilitation program.

Joseph's Legacy said its 'worst nightmare happened' after Evie, a four-year-old German Shepherd and Norwegian Elkhound cross, was found dead in a cell at Warren Correctional Institution in Lebanon, Ohio.

The institution, which houses 1,365 inmates, is a high security jail which contains adult mail prisoners – including murderers – aged over 18 on a 45-acre site.

This has really upset me. I hope they prosecute the inmates who did this for animal abuse and remove any privileges they may have. Rest In Peace Evie #justiceforevie
Oh, poor sweet Evie :( How horrific, sad and totally disgusting. :(

I know I just want to give her a cuddle and a steak I don’t understand how anyone could harm her.

How many men would be sharing a cell? I wonder if it is a He did it, no he did it situation and they are blaming each other. I hope there are cameras.

She was in the cell with 2 inmates.

I wonder how often this happens and we just don't hear about it. It just always seemed weird that you would place animals in a situation you obviously would not place children. I would not trust any incarcerated person further than I could spit.

I don't think it happens often, that's why it is news.

I have only read the headline, and cannot read any more, as so upset. Don't want to know what happened.:(:(:(:(:(
I hope the Creep, that did this is treated very poorly, and something VERY BAD happens to him soon.
Please Karma act and give justice to this dear Doggie.

I can't read any responses, as will get further upset.
I vowed, not to look at any animal stories, and after this headline, without finding further info, I must stick to my plan: don't open any.
I do this with any mention of 'live exports', switch channels as soon as an animal story begins, never watch 'animal documentaries etc.
Hope, if there is 'another life', these dear little things come back as masters to the ugly humans that caused them pain.
I'll now cuddle my little doggie, and read a book, to get tired, and try to fall asleep.
