Man accused of killing 4 relatives in West Chester passed out in court

Aug. 5, 2019

"...At the Monday arraignment Gurpreet Singh, of West Chester, pled not guilty to the charges. Judge Gregory Howard denied bond and noted that Singh could face the penalty.

Singh’s attorney Charlie H Rittgers asked for a reasonable bond, noting that Singh is a US citizen and has no prior criminal record.

Singh collapsed after making his plea, as prosecutors and lawyers were discussing upcoming schedules with the judge. He fell to the floor and had to be helped by deputies, who helped him to a chair.

The scheduling issue involves another celebrated trial Rittgers has coming up: the case of a teen charged with killing her newborn baby. The trial for Brooke Skylar Richardson is scheduled to begin Sept. 3 in neighboring Warren County.

Rittgers said Singh collapsed again in the elevator but he declined the offer to be taken to the hospital.

Rittgers said that he did not know why his client collapsed. He added that the turmoil of the charges and the death penalty may have been factors because Singh is healthy.

He said his client had been informed in a visit on Friday that he had been indicted and that prosecutors were seeking the death penalty.

Rittgers said after the arraignment that his client was “absolutely not guilty.”...

The next pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 10 at 10 am in Judge Gregory Howard’s courtroom."

Trial date scheduled in West Chester quadruple killing

Oct. 10, 2019

"The man accused of killing four family members in West Chester earlier this year is now scheduled to stand trial in a death penalty case in September 2020....

During his arraignment in August, Singh pleaded not guilty to the charges and collapsed in court. Judge Gregory Howard denied bond and noted that Singh could face the death penalty

Singh appeared in court on Thursday. A preliminary trial date was scheduled to run from Sept. 21, 2020, to Oct. 9, 2020. But these dates frequently are pushed back in capital cases.

Singh is being represented by Charles H. Rittgers, who has filed motions to close all pre-trial hearings in his client's case. His reasoning: "So we don't taint the jury pool like in the Richardson case."

Rittgers' law firm represented Brooke Skylar Richardson and secured her acquittal on a murder charge in the death of her daughterearlier this year in a trial that garnered national attention.

On Thursday, Rittgers also asked the judge to try to address the food served in the jail. Singh is vegetarian and the jail has struggled to accommodate his diet, Rittgers said.

Another pre-trial hearing is scheduled in the case on Nov. 13.

Singh was mostly quiet in court, shackled and in an orange jumpsuit. Several members of the local Sikh community appeared in court. Rittgers said at least some were there to support his client."
