Where Is Lester Eubanks? Fugitive Murderer Reward Increases After His Case Is Featured on 'Unsolved Mysteries'

''The cold case of fugitive Lester Eubanks, who was sentenced to death in the 70s for the murder of a 14-year-old girl in Ohio but then escaped prison, has been given new energy as tips poured in after an episode of the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries” highlighted the case. The U.S. Marshals Service also increased their reward for information to Eubanks to $50,000 after the series was released on Oct. 19.''

''Authorities have discovered that Eubanks had gone by the alias Victor Young in the time he has been free. In the Netflix episode, police described how they also discovered that he made his way to California, where he lived with a pen pal that he talked to in prison. The woman had been previously married to Eubanks’ cousin, who was later killed. She described Eubanks as a bully, and said she eventually got him to move out by saying she had received a call from the FBI, according to police.

Police also believe that Eubanks’ father, the late Rev. Mose L. Eubanks, knew where his son was and would not reveal that information to authorities. Authorities tapped Mose’s phone and believed that he took calls from Eubanks. Mose died in 2012.''

We were looking for a different perspective - a real outside-the-box thinker - who could possibly give us insight," Deputy U.S. Marshal David Siler explained.

Siler had spent years dissecting the shards of evidence surrounding the 1965 murder of 14-year-old Mary Ellen Deener, Eubanks' 1973 escape from an Ohio prison and his series of false identities to remain at large. ABC News profiles this case in our podcast, "Have You Seen This Man?," hosted by "The View's" Sunny Hostin.

Siler wondered if a psychological profile could help fill in some of the many gaps in his probe. He reached out to the U.S. Marshals Service chief psychologist Dr. Michael Bourke for answers.

Bourke is a former prison psychologist who runs the Behavioral Analysis Unit, a team of mental health experts, forensic scientists and criminologists who can help deputies dig into the mindsets of the fugitives they are seeking.

"We took a look at behavioral patterns and habits and other aspects of psychology that might inform how they direct their energy," Bourke told ABC News. "In that mix is where you hope there's a breakthrough."

The role of profiling in criminal investigations has seeped into popular culture through books and television shows like "Mindhunter" and "Criminal Minds." Experts said the potential for a deep psychological analysis to help uncover helpful ideas for finding Eubanks should not be underestimated.

"It can be a tremendous benefit to investigators," said Bradley Garrett, a former FBI profiler and hostage negotiator who consults for ABC News. "It can help you to pull out behaviors that would give you indicators of what he might be connected to today."

Bourke's team looked at two main aspects of the Eubanks case. They looked for clues about his personality that might give Siler new directions for his search. And they provided guidance for how Siler could approach interviews with potential witnesses who may know something about Eubanks' whereabouts but be reluctant to talk.

One important takeaway of the review, Bourke said, was his belief that Eubanks remains dangerous, calculating and at times impulsive, even as a man in his late 70s.
US Marshal 'Mindhunter' activated in search for cold case fugitive Lester Eubanks

if he went to Michigan, what's to have stopped him from crossing the border into Canada
Always possible, imo.
Had an unusual encounter once with an American fugitive, who was wanted for shooting ( injuring but not killing) a cop when he was much younger.
Hoping enough time has passed before telling it here for the first time. Will make it as brief as possible.

Went to a library i frequented for material needed for a job i was doing at the time.
Oddly, this time i took the wrong escalator and ended up on the wrong floor.
Figured that since i was already there, maybe i could still find the information if not the pics. that i needed.
So i went to the info/reception desk and asked the conservative looking older man behind the counter, if there was a book with photos showing the long-term effects/results of getting shot.

The man practically jumped from behind the counter, raising his voice and angrily saying "what do you want to know about that for?!''

Walking away, feeling awkward and confused as to why this guy seemed to take such such offense- surprised when he followed after me, suddenly pleasant and helpful and offering me
various books.

Soon after, it was in the papers that they arrested the US fugitive, who was the very same man who had built a respectable life for himself in Canada.

Have often wondered if he thought that i was giving him advance warning, or threatening him. Guess it was just a bizarre coincidence/omen, wonder if he remembers me?

Murderer of a sweet little girl who smiles out.at us from an old photo.

Breaks my heart to a million pieces.

Further on up the road he will reap what he sowed.

I wonder if anyone ever followed his art? It's hard to believe he never made any more paintings. Artists have a distinct style and though they evolve you can still follow it as it gradually changes.. Maybe he sold a painting at some point or was showed in an exhibit. Narrowing down artists with a similar style in states and cities that Lester was sighted in, you can visually deduct which paintings are his, and also narrowing down with artist signatures or initials. Being he has been reported in Cali recently you can focus on art coming from there solely...

Welcome to Ws khdmc, great suggestion about keeping eyes open for the art!

Convicted child killer on the run for years may be captured soon
''Investigators narrowed their search to the City of Angels due in part to recently obtained photos from after his escape that showed him working and living in the area.
One of the U.S. Marshals’ 15 most-wanted fugitives, authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for his capture, the agency’s highest ever.''

''He escaped from the state Department of Corrections on Dec. 7, 1973, while on an honor furlough to go Christmas shopping unescorted with other inmates as a reward for good behavior.''

“We believe that he may have never left the Greater Los Angeles area,” Deputy US Marshal David Siler, a member of a cold case squad seeking Eubanks, said, according to KABC-TV. “We’re just hoping for that one, one piece of the puzzle that’s going to get us to his front door.”

Eubanks fled to Los Angeles and worked under the name “Victor Young” after escaping from prison, living off and on with a woman named Kay Eubanks between 1975 and 1996, investigators say, according to KABC.

Siler said investigators know Eubanks has friends and associates in the Los Angeles area. “We just need to talk to those people,” he told KABC.''

''While bouncing around to different jobs, the fugitive reportedly worked in a waterbed factory and as a hospital janitor.

“Fugitives on the run as long as Eubanks tend to use that time to change their appearance, use aliases, and even start new lives,” Siler said, according to City News Service. “He literally could be hiding in plain sight. This is why we are asking citizens to be vigilant and contact us with any information they believe will help us apprehend him.”

Eubanks would be in his 70s now and is described as 5-foot-11-inches and was around 175 pounds at the time of his arrest.''

''See what investigators have learned about Lester Eubanks' psychological profile that may explain how he's managed to hide in plain sight for nearly half a century.

New clues point to Southern California in long-running manhunt for child killer
March 2021 rbbm.
''Eubanks bounced around, living at times in Gardena, South Central, Long Beach and North Hollywood. In the late 80s or early 90s, it's believed that Eubanks worked as a janitor at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood.''

''Hundreds of new clues poured in after the ABC News Investigative Unit went inside the manhunt with the U.S. Marshals Service for the podcast, "Have You Seen This Man."

Among those clues are photos that Siler recovered showing employees at a former waterbed factory in Gardena, where Eubanks worked during his early years on the run.''

''Springer knew Eubanks as Victor Young and says that he worked hard, kept quiet and rode a 10-speed bicycle to work. She says that when it rained, she would sometimes offer a ride to his Gardena apartment building on El Segundo Boulevard right across from a golf course.

Another thing she remembers about him: "He wore a lot of cologne and it would give me a migraine," she recalls. "It was overwhelming."

"One of my business partners, she took pictures of everybody, everything," Springer says. "And he was not in any of them, not one."

"One person that we have a name as a possible girlfriend, her name is Renee and she went by 'Sherm,'" says Siler.''

''The U.S. Marshals are asking anyone with information to call 1-877-WANTED2 (926-8332)''

Mary Ellen Deener, age 14 years old was murdered in Mansfield, Ohio on Sunday, 14 November 1965 by Lester Eubanks.

Mary Ellen was on her way to the local Laundromat when Eubanks attempted to rape her. She was shot in the right side of her chest, and then in the abdomen.

Eubanks returned to the body after he shot her and smashed Mary Ellen's head in with a brick.

Eubanks was convicted on May 25 1966 of first-degree murder while perpetrating a rape. He escaped from prison on December 7, 1973.

He has recently appeared on a wanted poster for the crime of "Escape", but it should be remembered what crimes put him in prison to begin with.

How many other children were victims of Eubanks? How many more will there be if he is not apprehended?

It is a very close resemblance. Where did you find the color photo, and what information do you have about it?

If the information matches with what is known about Lester Eubanks, I would pass it on to the US Marshalls Service.

Wow, that is awesome information, thank you welcome to Ws, ParisBlu25 !

Colorized and fixed up the picture of Mary Ellen Deener:
Poor girl never even got a chance in life. Unbelievable Eubanks got away in the circumstances he did.
I never really felt like investigators were closing in when they said they were a few years ago, seemed to be like a scare tactic to try lure any tips from anyone who may have seen/harboured him over the years without much tangibility to it. Just so many years had passed and there seems such little information out there, or should I say no information since he disappeared (except something about ‘pictures in LA?’). Wouldn’t it be great if he is recaptured before death (if that hasn’t already occurred) and spends his final days/weeks/years in a cell. All just IMO fellow websleuthers!
