Ex-sheriff detective Sean O'Connell stands trial on Heather Bogle-related charges

July 30, 2018

"FREMONT - The trial against former Sandusky County Sheriff's Office Detective Sean O'Connell begins Monday with more than 28 witnesses, including former Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer, expected to testify.

O'Connell, 53, was indicted in December of eight counts.

Seven of the eight charges levied against O'Connell are related to his investigation into the homicide of Bogle, a 28-year-old single mother from Ballville Township who was found dead in the trunk of her vehicle on April 10 2015.

Bogle had been badly beaten, her hair had been shaved in a jagged pattern and she died from two gunshot wound through the lungs, according to a preliminary autopsy.

O'Connell led the investigation of Bogle's homicide from April 10 until he was suspended in June 27, 2016...."

Ex-sheriff detective Sean O'Connell pleads guilty to tampering with evidence

July 30, 2018

"FREMONT - Former Sandusky County Sheriff's Office Detective Sean O'Connell pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence Monday before he was set to stand trial.

O'Connell, 53, was indicted in December of eight counts.

Ottawa County Probation Department will conduct a pre-sentencing investigation hearing prior to O'Connell's sentencing set for 11 a.m. on Sept. 13.

Visiting judge Patricia Cosgrove could sentence O'Connell to up to 36 months in prison after the former detective pleaded to a third-degree felony charge.

As part of his plea, O'Connell can not own a firearm, and is subject to post release community control.

Following his plea, seven other charges were dismissed by visiting Judge Patricia Cosgrove.

Seven of the eight charges were related to O'Connell's handling of the Heather Bogle homicide investigation.

O'Connell's guilty plea to tampering with evidence is related to the Bogle investigation...."

"The indictment for count eight of tampering with evidence states on or about May 1, 2016 through June 30, 2016, O'Connell is accused of misleading public officials to corrupt the outcome of the investigation.

O'Connell lead the Bogle investigation from April 10, when she was found dead in the trunk of her car to June 27, 2016 when he was suspended by former Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer for giving the entire Bogle case file to a Sandusky County Department of Job and Family Services worker.

O'Connell resigned in September 2016 prior to receiving any discipline and told the News-Messenger that he was seeking an opinion from the SCDJFS worker on a person of interest in the case.

In the one charge unrelated to the Bogle case, O'Connell was indicted on a felony count of unauthorized use of the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway system, or OHLEG.

Gwen Howe-Gebers, special prosecutor, said she will not identify the person O'Connell allegedly searched on OHLEG...."

Detective's deal stirs mixed reaction

8/5/2018

"FREMONT — Heather Bogle’s loved ones aren’t the only family devastated by former Sandusky County sheriff’s detective Sean P. O’Connell and his corrupted practices as an investigator....

ome Bogle family members were in the courtroom when O’Connell pleaded out. They declined comment after the hearing ended. Josh Feasel, Heather’s brother, who triggered O’Connell’s demise with his harsh criticism of the detective early on, said he was disappointed in the deal O’Connell made.

Other families who say they were victimized by O’Connell in other corrupted and botched investigations he conducted reacted to his plea deal in different ways — some with frustration, some with fury....

O’Connell will be sentenced Sept. 13 by visiting Judge Patricia Cosgrove, the same judge who handed down a four-year term for Overmyer."

Myers' trial delayed to October

8/10/2018

"FREMONT — The suspect in the Heather Bogle homicide had his trial pushed back a month.

Originally set for Sept. 4, the murder trial for Daniel Myers, 49, is now scheduled for Oct. 22, according to a Sandusky County Common Pleas Court docket.

Judge John Dewey delayed the trial to July 27 because Myers’ attorneys, Toledo-based lawyers Merle Dech and Jane Roman, have had “difficulties” getting reports from expert witnesses,” the docket states. The issue with that, according to the docket, is because the defense lawyers by rule must present those reports to the prosecutor at least 21 days before trial.

“Those issues have now been addressed to the satisfaction of all,” the docket states.

The court also set dates in October for reviewing jury questionnaires and interviewing potential jurors, according to the docket...."

"Trial in Bogle murder case set to begin Oct. 22

FREMONT - After two hours of debate on Wednesday, attorneys in the Daniel Myers homicide trial whittled down a pool of 225 potential jurors to 160 for the jury trial set to begin Oct. 22.

There is still a long way to go, however, before the final jury of 12, plus two to four alternates, is selected for the trial that is scheduled to last two weeks in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court. Judge John Dewey is presiding. ...

The list of 225 remaining potential jurors will be pared down further through general voir dire, slated for 9 a.m. Oct. 17. ..."

Jury selection begins in Heather Bogle murder trial

Oct. 4, 2018

Daniel Myers appeared in a Sandusky county courtroom today as his defense attorney and county prosecutor Timothy Braun went over the initial 215 juror candidates.

After going over the short form surveys, 65 were excused from service in the October 22 trial.
[.....]
The next hearing in this trial is set for one week from Wednesday, where the court will begin long form juror surveys in hopes to begin dwindling down that juror pool to 12 seated jurors and 4 alternates for the October 22 trial.

So a week from Wed. is 10/10. Also a Discovery hearing on 10/9 per my notes! :)
