The state of Ohio often does put runaways in Juvie. I'm so happy he was found safe. I am wondering if the reason he's in juvie is to keep him safe temporarily? I guess that's what foster care is for though. So happy to see he's safe!

Maybe there aren't provisions to protect a child witness? I mean, where should he go?

What a mess. Glad he's found, of course!

SUGARCREEK TWP. — Update@10:37 a.m.:

Jacob looked healthy when they got him this morning, Brown said. He’s thin, but he’s always been thin, he said. But the sad part is that he’s not had any schooling for the past year, and he’s not had any interactions with other kids, Brown said.

Chief doesn’t know if he’s traumatized, but he appears to be healthy.

Jacob Caldwell, teen missing since father's death, safely located
They don’t know if he’s traumatized, yet they are putting him in juvenile detention? That doesn’t sound right.

Around 11:30 p.m Monday night, Chief Brown said his office served a search warrant at a home in Miami Township in Montgomery County. There were four adults living inside the home and Jacob was in the basement. It did not appear that Jacob was "secured or locked in" the basement, adding that it appeared he was free to go where he pleased in the home. However, it appears Jacob did not go outside while he was in the home or socialized with any other children.

Jacob looked to be healthy when he was escorted out of the home, but the Chief isn't not sure how the situation has affected his mind, "traumatized, I don't know, someone else is going to have to make that evaluation."

After being taken out of the home, Jacob was taken to the Greene County Juvenile Detention Center where he's being held on a warrant out of Beavercreek.

The adults in the home were surprised to see police at their door, Brown says they are not sure yet what charges they'll face.

This is another one of those cases that I can't be happy about the outcome. Apparently he was being well taken care of, and now he is in Juvenile Detention. :(

Wow!

He's alive and physically safe - that's all that matters right now IMO. But I imagine this thread will grow and grow as the investigation continues and more news is released.

Did I say wow?

Ok. Here’s my thing. No kid is going to come forward if they are afraid of going to juvie. I think this is a deterance. I love in Ohio and have worked with run away kids in the foster system. I’m not sure what the answer is but I don’t think it’s locking him up.

IMO if they were planning to move him to a new location, more people are probably involved than just those 4. If he left willingly with those 4, then he might very well leave again with someone else. As much as I dislike his being locked up, it may be for his own safety and the safety of anyone who would get temporary custody of him.

What an irresponsible, selfish so-called mother. I wonder what she thought would happen to Jacob long-term. Or maybe she didn’t even care.

Snipped.

She was too busy protecting herself to worry about Jacob's future.

Well taken care of? As in fed and such? Yes, but he didn't go out, go to school, see any other children, was separated from siblings and paternal grandparents with no professional help after watching his father be murdered?... Not exactly well taken care of in my eyes.

Yes, Ohio has developed a reputation for treating kids poorly in the last decade. It's overrun by crooked politicians who don't really care about these things. Hopefully, the young man will get the care and support he needs. Keeping his case in the news media actually will help.

So you think Juvenile Detention is better for him?

No, not at all. My point was I don't think he was well taken care of where he was at. In the bigger picture.

Was he better off in a basement hiding from the world or in a detention center?

What a choice.

I hope things improve soon for him.

I'm not sure if I am wording things wrongly, but I wasn't saying that either of these options are good - I was saying that I don't think he was well cared for while he was missing.

Shame he couldn't have been left to recover with his grandparents.

Well the article said he looked healthy and he was free to come and go as he pleases. Him not going out or going to school is certainly troubling, but considering what he has been through, I doubt that is the worst of his problems. I don't see that his life will be any better in Juvenile Detention.

Me neither @KaaBoom :( It is very sad. His whole life has been altered in a matter of 1 year.

Oh, I know what you meant. I'm just shaking my head that this kid doesn't seem to have good options at the moment.
