Was he better off in a basement hiding from the world or in a detention center?

What a choice.

I hope things improve soon for him.

jmo

I think most people think being free is better than being locked up. Many criminals hideout out to avoid being arrested. If they didn't think that was the better option, they would just give themselves up. So no I don't think he is better off now. I too hope things improve for him. But how that is going to happen in a detention center, I'm not sure.

Just for people wondering this is what a charge of "unruly" child means in Ohio. I just heard one in my town this morning on the police scanner. The child was hitting his mother so was charged as "unruly child"

An unruly child is a child who is a habitual truant, does not submit to control of the child’s parents or guardian, behaves in way that will injure their health or the health of another, or violates the law.

They don’t know if he’s traumatized, yet they are putting him in juvenile detention? That doesn’t sound right.

Sometimes detention is used to help the juvenile come to terms with what has happened. We need to realize that this young man watched his father be murdered. He then was secreted away and kept inside for a year. He does need to be with his grandparents who have custody, but likely he will need time. He has probably been indoctrinated this entire year that his father and his father's family are evil human beings. He may have even been convinced that his father's family killed him or that he was killed for drugs or something evil. He likely did not know this whole time that his own mother had his father killed. This is all JMVHO! Also, after reading his mother's FB page (before the murder), she was trying to convince people that she was an abused wife. She may have convinced the kids of this before the murder. Indoctrination takes time to undo.

Time is needed for this young man to reestablish a relationship with his grandparents. He needs to be in a safe environment during this time, and the court will determine if this is the right place for him. Unfortunately, he may have also been convinced (true or otherwise) that he was somehow involved in the murder of his father. We just don't know what has gone on for the last year. We may never know.

It sounds like he was arrested for truancy.

Thoughtful post, and helpful. Thank you.

IMO if they were planning to move him to a new location, more people are probably involved than just those 4. If he left willingly with those 4, then he might very well leave again with someone else. As much as I dislike his being locked up, it may be for his own safety and the safety of anyone who would get temporary custody of him.

I agree. Personally, I would be surprised if Jacob isn’t separated from the other juvenile detainees.

I may be completely wrong here, but the authorities wanted to make sure that there was a legal means to place Jacob in protective custody immediately once he was found, and they determined to go ahead and issue a warrant was the best way, IMO.

Well the article said he looked healthy and he was free to come and go as he pleases. Him not going out or going to school is certainly troubling, but considering what he has been through, I doubt that is the worst of his problems. I don't see that his life will be any better in Juvenile Detention.
RBBM for focus

“The four adults found inside the home are associates of Jacob's mother, Tawnney Caldwell, who is in jail facing a potential murder charge in relation to Robert Caldwell's death.

We always felt that he was fine … We had a really strong feeling that it was a family member who was involved in him being missing,’ [Sugarcreek Twp. Police Chief Michael] Brown said.

While Jacob did not appear to be held against his will, he was apparently extremely isolated while missing.

‘It was our understanding that he was not outside much. He's gone a year without school. He's gone a year without socializing with friends,‘ Brown said. ‘There was no evidence of him being secured or locked in. I think he could have roamed throughout the house, if he wished.’” (bolded and underlined by me for focus)
Jacob Caldwell, Ohio boy missing since witnessing father's 2017 slaying, found safe

From another article:
“Chief Brown said it did not appear that Jacob was ‘secured or locked in’ the basement, adding that it appeared he was free to go where he pleased in the home. However, Brown said it appears Jacob did not go outside while he was in the home or socialized with any other children.

[SBM]

He added that investigators always felt Jacob was not in physical danger, ‘we always felt that he was fine, we had a feeling, a really strong feeling that it was a family member involved in him being missing.’ Brown said Jacob was not abducted, but said he was encouraged by family members to run away.” (bolded and underlined by me for focus)

Jacob Caldwell, teen missing since father's death, safely located
[Poloce Chief] Brown said his department received a call on Monday from a female who said she had information about where to find Jacob.

Brown said the tip led to a search warrant being executed at a Miami Twp. home around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

"Four adults were inside, and we found Jacob in the basement. That appeared to be his primary area of sleeping," Brown said.

Jacob was taken directly to the Greene County Juvenile Detention Center, where he is being held on an unruly charge from a previous runaway incident in Beavercreek, Brown said.

--two of the four adults provided useful information for the investigation.

Surveillance video recorded the night Jacob disappeared showed the teen standing in front of a local Walmart, where he may have been picked up by someone in a pre-arranged meeting.
I'm wondering who had custody the first time he ran away?

Ok. Here’s my thing. No kid is going to come forward if they are afraid of going to juvie. I think this is a deterance. I love in Ohio and have worked with run away kids in the foster system. I’m not sure what the answer is but I don’t think it’s locking him up.
I think it would be a start to find out why he ran.

The homeowner said she was shocked when told the missing boy was discovered at the home. She said they never went in the home when they stopped by to collect rent check each month.
The homeowner said police have not contacted her or her husband about what happened Monday night.

One neighbor said they had noticed a white, teenage boy at the home recently – outside and coming and going from the house – with long blonde hair tied into a pony tail. That matched a description of what a family attorney said Jacob Caldwell looked like this week.

Ex-wife indicted in Robert Caldwell murder conspiracy has trial delayed

The ex-wife of a Beavercreek man killed in front of their children had her trial delayed Tuesday in Dayton’s U.S. District Court.

Tawnney (Thomas) Caldwell, 34, had a scheduling conference set for Nov. 1, at which time her attorneys and federal prosecutors may have a trial calendar, including a new trial date.

Bobby Caldwell, 35, of Beavercreek, allegedly was shot by Sterling Roberts on Aug. 15, 2017, in a Riverside parking lot in front of three of Caldwell’s children. One of those boys, Jacob, went missing soon after the shooting and was found in a Miami Twp. residence nearly a year later.

Tawnney Caldwell’s court docket indicates at scheduling conference/motion hearing for Dec. 5. It also shows that a mitigation package is due May 1, 2019, and a notice of intent due Aug. 28, 2019.

After 15 months, still no trial dates in alleged murder conspiracy against man killed in front of children
