I'm still suspicious of neighbors, whether in the adjoining townhomes, in the apartments across the street or in other residences nearby. Is there somebody she would have felt comfortable opening the door to late at night and then going to that person's residence? Seems like something her father would probably have an idea about since he lived with her, but maybe not if he had been spending a lot of time at his girlfriend's. A neighbor could have seen JC leave and then made his move to lure her to his residence and then attack her.

It does seem like the perp is someone who is familiar to Katelyn...JC, a neighbor or another friend who came to see her/showed up at her house after JC left.

What about the landlord? Do we know anything about him or her?

Does anyone else wonder why dad had to move out so soon? I mean, couldn't he have waited another couple of months when Katelyn would be moving to Colorado? I'm guessing the dad moving out would've made it difficult for Katelyn to pay her own rent and that's why she was going to move in with JC's mom. Just wondering why the dad was so rushed to move out. It's not like he couldn't stay with his gf and continue to help Katelyn out for another 2 months or so. Very strange, imo.

I know when we rented from a place once if the lease was "over" and you didn't sign a new lease they raised your rent $300. I don't know the answer to this question BUT I would assume there would have been a room for Katelyn at the girlfriends (remember the sister is still in school so I'm sure they have a place for the sister) but I am getting the impression Katelyn didn't do well with change and maybe didn't want to go to the girlfriends. I noticed in her pics on FB she doesn't have a room at her mom's house.

Only that the owner told someone the dad rented the apartment like 5 years ago sight unseen because him and the girls were living in a hotel and he wanted something safer which the irony is painful. I do believe that it might be a husband and wife who own it but I will find out for sure.

Just a question:

I've never used weed, so I don't know ... do you get hyper when smoking? Does it affect you like other drugs, such as causing hallucinations, etc.?

Just a thought: if JC had been smoking allot before being with her, was he in a state of unusual anger, hyper, or some affect, to have 'lost it', when normally he wouldn't have?

Or did he ever do any other harder drugs?

The only time I have personally seen or heard of anything like this happening, the pot was laced with something else... like acid. Pretty much when I used to get stoned, we sat around, eating pizza, and watching movies or playing video games. We definitely weren't hyper. And most times I fell asleep sitting up. We also didn't get angry about anything... we were too mellow.

Pot isn't going to make you attack someone. It makes you mellow.

However...some potheads can become very agitated when they don't have any weed. I've seen that personally. Pot is psychologically, not physically, addictive and being without it can really put a heavy user on edge and make him lose his temper more easily.

Pot sometimes leads to stronger drugs BUT I have to say something that kinda surprises me when we have a workers comp injury at work we have to be drug tested and I thought this was becoming pretty typical so I wonder if he had a drug test when he had his workers comp injury.

MANY MOONS ago I casually smoked pot over a 3 year period I might have smoked 3-4 times a year and quit totally after getting high with a group of friends and basically freaking out. I could see myself floating around the room, my cousin was with me said I was the biggest buzz kill ever and I was the only one affected this way. Scared me to death!

This is bugging me this morning...about the papers. Assuming JC did just like he said, which is go to the fire pit and burn her documents.

When did JC come into possession of the papers? According to the texts, she wanted to be there to burn them. So why would she give him the papers that evening when she knew she was going to stay home and go to bed?

Did JC have the papers at his house? If so, did he go back home, pick up the papers and then go burn them? I seem to recall that he said he went directly to a friends house.

So, did he have the papers in his car and was just driving around with them for a few days?

Going back to the phone thing that DimeDetective brought up:

1) If I wanted to confuse the situation, I would take a flip phone, set up the picture, make sure it didn't move, and then close the flip screen enough so that it might look like candy bar phone but doesn't shut the camera off. It'd be tricky, but I think it could be done if the perp had a few minutes to mess around.

2) As far as I and my techie BF can figure out, using Bluetooth does not leave records. Its typically not a major or paid service like SMS, MMS, email, etc, so the phone companies would have no reason to track it. Also, from what I understand, its the equivalent of a digital USB cable, so a little different than the data transfer in texting and email. Also, if they both had smart phones, its pretty easy to get data cables and adapters so that the files of interest can be transferred without Bluetooth.

Time stamps are about the only thing I can think of to track SD card transfers or Bluetooth, but in my experience takes a little more digging to find those than it does for texts.

3) Just a question- I have an older Blackberry, and I'm pretty sure the camera doesn't flash when I take pictures. Does anyone know for sure if KM's model (and JC's model phone) did flash?

4) I'm starting to wonder if JC wasn't framed in all of this. There's just so many things that seem to say "HEY, IT WAS HIM, IT WAS HIM" but not all of them make sense. I guess it happens, and maybe more often among competing dealers?

Just some thoughts.

My blackberry I have the option of turning the flash off or leaving it on.

I have said from almost the start....

  1. He did it.
  2. Someone who knew them both not only did this but set out to "frame" JC.
  3. JC has the worst luck in the world combined with some VERY strange habits (burning papers late at night in the rain and sleeping until 4:30 pm), combined with a family that has not been an asset for him.
    4. Aliens did this and framed JC.

On 8/29, the amazing A_News_Junkie posted two photographs from the 8/25 Nancy Grace show spotlighting the disappearance of Katelyn Markham.

Of the second photo, A_N_J said:

"I wonder if this is the pic of a pic [KM's last text to JC before she disappeared] that he showed reporters. Reason being you see the circle glare, like a photo taken of a screen."

Though this hasn't been confirmed, I believe both the "circle glare" and the fact that the photo was displayed immediately after Nancy Grace barked, "Liz, am I seeing the text message? Is that what was sent? Liz, that's a yes/no. OK. If we have the text message, let me see it" (transcript here) are compelling reasons to believe that A_N_J may very well be right about this being KM's last text (the infamous "picture of a picture").

Exhibit 1

Exhibit1.jpg

KM's final ("picture of a picture") text?

Assuming this photo was indeed KM's final text, I sat down and looked over it very carefully by zooming in on my iPhone. My idea was that because of the "circle glare" noted by A_N_J, maybe I would be able to catch a reflection in the glossy surface of the hard copy photo that was photographed. And I did:

Exhibit 2

Ex2.jpg

The flash/"circle glare" in the lower left hand corner very clearly illuminates the upper left hand corner of the cell phone being used to photograph the photograph of Katelyn. (Important: I was later surprised and disappointed to find that this same image, when blown up on my laptop -- Exhibit 2 -- fails to display my discovery with the same crystal clarity as my iPhone. Please don't be discouraged if you're unable to spot the reflection of the cell phone here; instead, I ask you to view the photo on your mobile phone, preferably an iPhone since I am certain you'll see what I'm seeing. Everyone else, please bear with me, and trust me: the reflection of the photographer's phone is there.)

Next, I set out to attempt to pin down a clear visual representation of KM's cell phone in order to confirm that it is indeed KM's cell phone reflected in the hard copy of the "final text" photo. Using image search engines, unconfirmed reports, and the only known photo of KM with her cell --

Exhibits 3 & 4

Exhibit3.jpg
Ex4.jpg

-- I was able identify what I believe is most likely KM's cell: a red BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220:

Exhibit 5

Exhibit5.jpg

Exhibit 6

Exhibit6.jpg

Red BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, front view.

Exhibit 7

Exhibit7.jpg

I had a friend look at Exhibit 2 on my iPhone, and she agreed that a) the upper left corner of the cell phone that was used to take the photograph of KM is clearly reflected in the glossy surface of the hard copy (as stated above), and b) the cell phone reflected in the hard copy of the photograph is a "candy bar" (non-flip, non-slider) phone.

Of course, many people (and thus possible responsible parties for KM's disappearance) own candy bar phones, but it is worth mentioning here that JC uses a Cricket (candy bar) cell phone, which I was able to easily determine by pulling the following screen caps from video interviews/news segments (links included):

Exhibit 8

Ex8.jpg

JC's Cricket, front view. (http://www.wlwt.com/news/28919291/detail.html)

Exhibit 9

Ex9.jpg

JC's Cricket, back view. Note the camera lens at the top of the back, next to JC's finger. (http://www.wcpo.com/dpp/news/region...rfield/detectives-search-missing-woman's-home)

Furthermore, looking again at the "picture of a picture," we were able to easily determine that the flash originates from the top of the candy bar phone used to take this photograph. Upon further inspection of the Red BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 model likely owned by KM, we found that the flash on this phone originates from the middle/bottom of the upper half, as shown below:

Exhibit 10

Ex10.gif

Important Note: With most flip phones, it is possible to take a photograph with the phone shut; many flip phones offer a small preview on the front phone display. If KM took the picture of her picture with her phone closed, it would place the camera lens/flash at the top of the phone (as seen in the reflection in the glossy hard copy). However, this feature is normally used only for self-portraits. When photographing an object, there is no logical reason a person (especially an artist, who will naturally care a great deal about the quality of the photos she takes) would keep her flip phone shut, thus eliminating a preview of the photo that is about to be taken. A flip-phone owner would simply flip her phone open and enjoy a preview of her photo-to-be-taken on the larger inner display screen, which again places the camera lens/flash on KM's BlackBerry phone at the middle/bottom of the upper half.

Please take a close look at Exhibit 2 and let me know what you think.

(All above content MOO.)

First I think you need a new name -- like diamond detective as a dime is selling you sooooooo short!

Second, I think you are onto something - I can see a reflection of a phone and it would make sense that JC having a LG would not flip open the phone as he is conditioned to a one piece design.

I have an LG dare -- I am gonna try to look at the photo on it and see if I can see more clearly what you are seeing - but I do see it!

BRAVO DIAMOND DIME BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the circle glare on the photo or is it coming from the person who took the picture of the image on their television?

I don't believe she had the pearl flip phone. I think she had the 8130, which Cricket sold. It's been said she was also on Cricket like JC.

It's the right size and shape, and the flash is located at the top of the back of the phone.

SchoolgirlShamus, that's great because I'm not terribly "techy" either -- I've been looking forward to presenting what I have here and hopefully getting some of my questions answered, so your post helps a lot.

Without trying too hard, I can imagine a scenario where the responsible uses his own phone to take the photo of the photo, and then manipulates texts a little later, once he's out of the townhouse. However, I'm unclear on how much information LE has when it comes to phone records. If what they're able to look at is very detailed, I think what I'm considering here "may not mean a hill of a bean," as Judge Belvin Perry said. :)

Okay, tech savvy folks --- what if the pic was transferred blue tooth after it was taken?
Or since I am catching up - ignore my post as you all already thought of this!

Did you think of data card (sorry don't know the term) the little card that can be taken in and out of phones and used to store pics --
........or ignore me till I catch up! LOL

DimeDetective:

excellent post! I saw the "flash" in the photo but, unfortunately, I have no techie bones in my body to pursue any phone theories so I really tip my hat to you and others that understand this kind of thing. If you think about it, this is EXACTLY the type of experiment that detectives are performing on these phones and I think they know by now exactly "who" took "what" picture with "which" phone, what time it was sent and by who..(or "whom"..I never understood that rule)

Just wanted to thank you for this - it made me laugh. I'm tired and incredibly sad over this situation and I find humor a blessed coping mechanism, even dark sardonic humor, as would be expected with this kind of subject matter.

There have been some amusing comments in the FB discussion group, employing notorious details of the case, along the lines of, "I checked my inbox but don't see anything from you?" - "Well, you might need to wait 7 minutes." etc. etc.

One particularly funny fellow said, "If JC takes a polygraph, and one of the questions is whether he's ever taken a polygraph... will the machine break?" lol (I couldn't resist responding that the machine would probably catch fire in a rainstorm.)

As an aside note -- lots of us here will often use humor in the situation to keep our own psyche healthy. I personally find if I stay in the 'dark' too long without coming up for air or a snicker, I am useless. So for me it is totally a coping mechanism and never meant to be disrespectful. So go ahead and giggle, it is good for the soul and IMHO the case!

I think so too. THis is the phone I had before my current BB Bold. Also, if the flip phone had been used in a 'tripod' fashion with the phone barely opened, the picture would be upside down.

I think "shouldbworking" posted a link to this article and I just wanted to make a comment on a couple of things.

"Carter, a pizza delivery driver from Fairfield who has been in a relationship with Markham for six years, says he doesn't look at all the Facebook chatter about Markham. On Friday, Carter told The Enquirer that police have asked him for the first time to give them a written statement about his movements the weekend Markham went missing. "Accusing me isn't going to find Katelyn," Carter said Friday. "What would I do? We had a great relationship. Look at our pictures together on Facebook. Ask anybody I know. I've never been in a fistfight. I don't have a ridiculous temper."

We haven't discussed this "written statement" that the detectives are asking JC to provide for them but I have a couple of thoughts about it. First up, JC is such a poor communicator that they know up front that sitting across a table and trying to follow his train of thought and trying to pin him down on details (particularly TIME) is a pretty futile effort. The detectives have been working this case for three weeks straight which has given them quite a while to call in Katelyn's family, friends, co-workers, and JC's as well. They have developed their own timeline which can be backed up with statements from these friends as to what time JC arrived, and any text msgs he sent back and forth between friends prior to Katelyn's disappearance during the night and the next day. They have cell phone records, debit/credit card transaction records that might prove he is lying about his whereabouts in the 24 hours surrounding this incident. They have forensic evidence like prints, hairs and fibers which we still know nothing about...(firepit, possible blood drops in his car). They have the statement he made to police when he went into the station for his first interview and can compare it to all of the conversations he has had with the media and the Nancy Grace show. Now, they want his written statement. With all of the evidence that they've gathered he will be called into the station and corner him and I bet he will be placed under arrest if he doesn't break down and confess. Because the next time they get him under that bright light in that little interrogation room they aren't going to play nice anymore. They have the evidence and they will confront him with it and if he does have a heart I think he will confess...but that is unless he stops the interview altogether and asks for an attorney.
