I've watched this sad video over and over and really don't see what else the police officer could do.He couldn't use a different weapon because it just happened so fast and she seemed very intent on stabbing the girl.It's just so sad someone this young had to die.I hope we learn more about her past and why she was in foster care because we have to learn to help children learn better before they act out this way.I hope she is at peace now.

It is a very good thing that this tragic incident was captured on video. And that the knife is clearly visible on her hand.

Kudos to the department for releasing the video so promptly.

Aliwi was actively shooting at LE, threatening them, and they only wounded him? Why?

Why not shoot 'center mass' once, instead of four times? The case is under criminal investigation. We are just spectators, who don't have all the info, so it's not plain and simple. <modsnip>

We don't know what exactly happened in the store. What we know is that once he was wounded, he surrendered. He didn't keep shooting , he gave up.

Because one shot is not guaranteed to stop the threat. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp. He doesn't know what her mind state is, if she's on drugs, etc. His main focus is to stop her from potentially killing the other person

Not too confusing, really. It sounds like she wanted to attack both girls, and did. She may have wanted to attack others in the crowd. I'm sure they'll get the whole story. Was it a case of bullying or some kind of long running teenage feud?

I think the girl that fell to the ground is very lucky that happened. In my opinion Ma'Khia broke off that attack because she didn't want to go to the ground with her. That's when she attacked the young woman in pink. JMO

While background information and life story may be interesting, I don’t think it changes anything. The reason MB was acting the way she was really has no bearing on the police officer’s reaction.
We are not here to determine if MB was justified in wanting to stab someone, or acting the way she did. The officer didn’t know her back story and it doesn’t really matter. What the officer DID know is she was currently the aggressor. SHE was currently, actively trying to stab someone. At that point her back story doesn’t matter.
Let’s suppose she was the one who originally called for help. Let’s suppose the others there were originally the aggressors. Would we then expect the officer to allow her to stab the girl in pink? Of course not, because MB’s life story doesn’t matter in regard to what ultimately happened.

I agree 100%. We could analyze all day about what led MB to act out the way she did, just as we could with any person who commits or attempts to commit a violent crime. The police officer isn’t there to get her background story before he has to make a split second decision. JMO

Please tell me you don’t think attempting to stab someone with a knife is a petty crime. And I believe your statement that people are being regularly killed by LE for petty crimes is a huge exaggeration. I’m not of course referring to George Floyd’s murder. JMO

Sometimes lethal force is necessary and LEOs are tasked with making those judgments in fractions of seconds. To expect an officer to shoot for a leg or arm or attempt to shoot a weapon from someone's hand or otherwise distract in a non lethal way someone armed with a lethal weapon is not logical or feasible. MOO

This wasn’t a petty crime. She was trying to commit murder. But why are we not also talking about the men who is bashing in that females head after she lands on the ground?

Some people aren’t talking about the man bashing in the female’s head because it doesn’t fit the agenda. I’m surprised the cops aren’t being bashed for not putting a stop to that. JMO

It’s hard to understand how or why a sixteen year old has so much bitterness and anger in her, Columbus is where I live and Columbus is where I work. I actually work in Columbus City Schools. I work inner city and it’s rough!! These kids fight everyday, two teachers went out of here last year with concussions trying to break up fights. When you fix the parents, you will fix the kids. They are taught to fight, their parents were taught to fight. But, yet at the same time I love theses students, I would do anything for them, because deep inside, at the end of the day they are kids. I am a little white lady, that is not what they see, they see I care I want better for them. So, until you have lived this life you will not understand these kids or why they do what they do!

The family of the girl in pink who was about to have her neck slashed with a knife probably doesn’t consider this to be a petty crime. MOO

Yes, it's different, the point is, he's got decent weapons training, and hey, he wasn't 400 yards away, he was mere feet. The authorities are investigating whether he used excessive force (4 shots to the chest area as opposed to say 1?) to stop a female from stabbing another. I'm not sure about using the bin Laden example; as far as we know, unlike bin Laden, MB hadn't yet been responsible for murdering 1 person let alone thousands, and maybe Rob O'Neill felt some satisfaction in taking out the infamous terrorist. Unlike bin Laden, MB was not an enemy of the state. She also did not have lieutenants or rifles, she had a knife. It's not Hollywood to ask whether NR needed to kill her to stop her. Is NR's 'shot choice' to shoot to kill MB supposed to be how LE handle civvies who are a threat to themselves or others? Why aren't mass shooters like James E. Holmes or Ahmad al Aliwi al-Issa shot dead on site when they've killed people and are still active threats to others? eta: Why did LE only wound Aliwi in the leg, when he was killing random strangers?

As far as Al Aliwi, was it confirmed he was shot in the leg by police? Or was he laying prone on the floor in a submissive position?

I personally don’t think so, jmo.
Going into a school armed with an AR15 is a very different situation.
I think if the teen girl was aiming an AR15, rather than a kitchen knife, people would feel different too.
It’s just much easier, and quicker, to kill someone with an AR15, she could have even mowed down everyone there with a barrage of bullets, including the cop. No way is that possible with the knife she held, she didn’t even grab a chef’s knife!
And this whole idea that LE needs to always shoot at center mass doesn’t make sense when the situation can obviously often be diffused without inflicting a death penalty in the street.
This is a uniquely American problem unless you want to compare the US to a few poor countries, like the Philippines under Duterte, where extrajudicial killings in the streets by the police are also the norm.

Do you happen to have a link that has a breakdown of the number of encounters with police and the percentage of all of those that result in the death of a civilian? For the whole US, and maybe for the year 2020?
Also, could you explain to me why you've said this is a uniquely American problem when other posters from Europe have stated that their LE encounters these problems as well?

The per capita rate of gun ownership and police killings are higher in the US than any western country, that’s just a sad fact.
I live in a country where the only gun allowed is a single shot air pump rifle and you have to apply and register to get it, a few cops carry guns but most don’t.
There’s very little homicide.

Could you please explain what gun ownership has to do with this situation? Also, I am genuinely interested in seeing a link that provides the stats that the US law enforcement agencies have the highest number of deaths to civilians.
