Circumstances of Disappearance:
Dawson was last seen in Dayton, Ohio on January 3, 1998. She was entering her apartment in the Martin Luther Manor Living Center on Liscum Drive at approximately 9:30 pm. She has never been heard from again.

Dawson's family members and friends became concerned when they could not reach her by January 5 and checked her residence. It appeared she left her apartment with the intention of returning soon, and there were no signs of forced entry. One of her winter coats was found draped over a chair, and her pocketbook was on the table. The pocketbook contained her wallet, money, credit cards, and a rent check dated January 8, 1998. There has been no activity on her bank account since her disappearance.

Dawson's loved ones reported it is uncharacteristic of her leave without warning. Her children declared her legally dead in June 2003, five and a half years after her disappearance. Foul play is suspected in her case and her whereabouts remain unknown.

I'm glad to see this on Websleuths. She disappeared within a half hour drive of me. It doesn't seem like she intended to leave her building in January since she left her winter coat, wallet, cash, and purse in her apartment. Plus, she just entered her building at 9:30 p.m.

I keep wondering why Maebell left her apartment after she returned home. She couldn't have gone far without her winter coat, wallet, and purse. Did she go to visit a neighbor in her building and something went wrong?

Yeah, the neighbor thing sounds interesting, 'cause when I would visit my girlfriends neighbor apt, I would just lock my door and go as is. No need for coat/purse if we weren't intending on going out.

I wonder if Maebell's apartment building had a separate laundry area, and she was taken or attacked while putting clothes in. Or another thought, maybe she took a bag of garbage to the dumpster or chute (if the building had one). This is very sad, she looks like a sweet lady.

<<Foul play is suspected in her case, because Dawson appears to have left her apartment with the intention of coming back soon. There were no signs of forced entry to her residence. Authorities do not believe she was attacked within her apartment or lured from the premises. Suicide has not been ruled out but has been deemed unlikely.

Dawson was born in Lexington, Kentucky and is a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. She had recently retired from her housekeeping job at Miami Valley Hospital at the time of her disappearance. She has also worked as a key punch operator, an elevator operator, a department store sales clerk and in a factory, and she has done volunteer work as well.

Dawson is described as being close to her family. She was divorced and left behind two adult daughters when she vanished. Her case remains unsolved. It is still being actively investigated by law enforcement authorities>>
