May 8, 2018

Last week, Grate plead guilty to 15 of 23 charges, leaving eight charges up for juror deliberation. Yesterday, a jury found Grate guilty of the other eight charges, potentially facing the death penalty, or life in prison without parole. The jury will be brought back for the sentencing phase of the trial on May 18.

Grate was caught September 2016 after a woman identified only as "Jane Doe," called 911 from the Ashland, Ohio, house where he was holding her captive. Throughout her 17-minute phone call, the woman begged for the police’s help as she stood quietly in the first-floor bedroom while Grate was asleep. The woman was safely rescued by Ashland police, and as a sexual assault victim her identity is being kept classified.

When Ashland police rescued Jane Doe, the remains of two bodies were found in the vacant home where she was being kept. An Ashland County prosecutor described the scene to a jury, claiming trash, dirty clothes and stuffed animals filled the rooms piled to the ceiling. The smell of death hung in the air, leading police to a room sealed off with duct tape where the body of a strangled woman was found under a pile of clothing.

As the investigation continued, police discovered a second victim's decomposing remains in the basement. The woman who had called for help told police she had been tied to a bed and sexually assaulted for days. The two bodies were later identified as Stacey Stanley of Greenwich and Elizabeth Griffin of Ashland.

During questioning by Ashland police after his arrest, Grate claimed he had disposed of another body in Madison Township. That afternoon, Richland County Sheriff's Office investigators discovered the body of a third woman in a wooded area behind a burned down house in Ashland, the remains potentially belonging to Grate's ex-girlfriend and missing person, Candice Cunningham.

In addition to the two bodies found, Grate has been suspected in the deaths of at least three other women (including Cunningham) in neighboring counties. They are an unidentified woman killed around 2005; Rebekah Leicy, killed in 2015; and Candice Cunningham, killed in 2016.

New details released on unidentified victim of convicted killer Shawn Grate

On Tuesday, the attorney general’s office sent a public bulletin to authorities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Isotope analysis of the victim determined she was likely born in one of these states. Testing also showed she likely spent the last five years of her life in Texas, Florida or the Caribbean.

Grate confessed to killing the Marion County Jane Doe, as well as two others in Richland County. He told investigators he may have killed the woman between 2004 and 2005. He said he believes she was a magazine saleswoman.

The Caribbean? That sounds kind of random.

Yes, another article stated Caribbean; Bahamas or Puertio Rico. The Bahamas is not far off the coast of Florida, wonder if the Florida Keys could be an inclusion of the Caribbean.

They're part of Florida. I would think they're included.

No worries Alleykins..... I'm terrible with grammar ... :) we all have some vice ..

Was tossing the Caribbean last night, have a friend she is from Puerto Rico, lives in Texas, has family in Texas and Florida and frequently went back to Puerto Rico over the years, even stayed once over a year.

I admit I have not fully followed the case and all of its findings over the years, wonder if she could be of Spanish descent.

Me too. What did we ever do without google? ;)

The Caribbean is an interesting inclusion for sure. I don't think I have seen that in other isotope results.

Ok found the article read it last night I may have miss understood it appears the reporter may have been providing possible areas within the Caribbean instead of LE.

Ohio AG: Marion victim of alleged Ashland serial killer is from Gulf Coast

Oxygen isotope values found in the victim’s bones indicate that she was likely born in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, or Florida. The testing also revealed that she likely spent the last five years of her life in Texas, Florida, or the Caribbean (Bahamas, Puerto Rico, etc.).

Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez is a light-skinned red-headed Puerto Rican.

I remember they used to have a vacation in Puerto Rico ad that featured a bunch of people sunbathing, in skin tones ranging from very pale to rich black. I loved it.

New tips roll in after southern states asked to help ID Grate victim

Marion law enforcement are chasing down leads stemming from a new public bulletin about the mystery woman found dead in Marion County and believed to be the first victim of suspected serial killer Shawn Grate.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office has received at least three tips as to the woman's identity since the bulletin was sent out last week, said Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey.
