The poor boys did not have a chance. The father used to date Brittany's mother before dating Brittany. This woman does not have a soul.

Oh dear, really? That sort of thing always strikes me as odd.

Well, that explains why she's estranged from her family. What kind of adult daughter goes after her mom's boyfriend?

Yes. And what kind of boyfriend goes after girlfriend's daughter? Just gives me the heebie jeebies.

Those poor little babies paid the price for all these adult mix-ups, that's for certain.:(

rsbm, boldfaced by me

Now, I'm not talking about 'criminal insanity' here, but do you not think that the boldfaced above reveals some pretty deep mental illness? If not, do you think that it shows mental health?

Not that I think that her culpability should be diminished at all, but the thought processes involved here certainly reveal some mental illness. It is not normal to think that way.

100% agree. I also do not diminish her culpability for now, unless it is proven she has some major psychiatric disorder that did not allow her to form intent or distinguish right from wrong. This dating your mom's boyfriend is also a sign of not being all there.

These poor babies. I wish I could hold them close. We will find out more as time passes.

When mothers kill their offspring as this, it always gives me pause. This is not a Casey Anthony or a Susan Smith. There is something odd here. Really, really odd.

“The unusual circumstance of her meeting this man ... he was romantically involved with her mother,” Mr. Goslee said. “There is another tier of he is a semi-stepfather for want of a better term. He was never married to her mother, but nonetheless they lived together as a micro-family. Then he marries her (Brittany Cummins Pilkington) and controls her and now she is giving birth to little boys.”

Mrs. Pilkington became pregnant with Gavin at age 17, married Mr. Pilkington on March 30, 2010 — just two months after her 18th birthday — and gave birth on June 12, 2010. She continued to remain at home and gave birth twice more by the time of the first death on July 22, 2014, ever increasing the mother’s sense of isolation.

“She is 23 years old, but if you were to ask me how old she was, I would probably tell you she presents like a 14-year-old.”

When the case is presented to the grand jury, likely this Tuesday, the jurors may be asked to consider capital murder charges that carry the possibility of a death sentence. But considering the mother’s story, Mr. Goslee said he is not sure if such charges will be returned.

hmm, I am a bit surprised by the comments from Prosecutor Goslee It sounds as if he himself is a bit conflicted and sympathetic, feeling this young woman has issues stemming from her childhood. Not the stance I am accustomed to seeing from the prosecution. Makes me wonder about what we don't know that he does.

That, basically, is my thought. Maybe she was so pissed off, angry with her husband, she decided to remove from the house what he "loved" the most, the sons. It was vengeance.

Why did the 2nd son survive so long?

Birth order:
Son #1 - approximately 2011
Daughter - approximately 2012
Son #2 - March 2014
Son #3 - May 2015

So why is the death order
Son #2
Son #1
Son #3

Why didn't she kill son #1 as soon as the daughter was born?
Why give birth to son #2 first and kill him.... then kill son #1 later?
Not that I understand any of it, but that confuses me given the alleged motive.

I'm surprised Mr Pilkington hasn't yet been charged with statutory rape. I think given the circumstances the charge is in order. JMO

In Ohio, it is illegal for an adult (someone 18 or older) to have sex with a minor (someone younger than 18), even if the sex is consensual. Those who break the law have committed statutory rape.

And once again, our social inability to face and treat mental illness takes innocents away. I pray we would all just see mental illness as it is: something must like hepatitis, diabetes, cancer. It is an illness. It is not a sign of evil, of lack of willpower, or love. It is an illness of the worst kind.

I weep for these children, and also for the mother, whom I believe to be seriously ill. I put however a lot of onus on the father. He was not sick.

:gaah: The indictment said Joseph Pilkington, 43, had lived in his future wife's house since she was 9 and held himself out as her father. Brittany Pilkington's mother has said she and Joseph Pilkington had been in a romantic relationship and she was not bothered when he took up with her daughter instead.

Also from the article:

"After raising her as one of his daughters for years, he had sexual intercourse with her when she was 17 and got her pregnant," according to the indictment.

I suspect that Mr. Pilkington was sexually abusing Brittany for many years prior to her being 17. I also suspect that Brittany's mother knew of the abuse. Possibly even allowing it to happen in a bizarre three way mother-boyfriend-daughter love triangle.

Now I wonder if charges will be filed against Brittany's mother if it could be proved that she had knowledge of the abuse against Brittany but did nothing to stop it. It's hard to believe Brittany's mother wouldn't be bothered by her partner taking up with her daughter, unless she knew of the relationship and approved of it.

source article for my comments

I don't see it so much her being jealous of her sons or that her controller was giving the boys more attention; I see it as her thinking that her boys would end up being abusers as well, so she has to 'get rid of them'.

Shortly before Niall’s death, the first in the series, Mrs. Pilkington also saw more abuse of girls in her family as her younger brother, Steven A. Cummins of Huntsville was charged in May 2014. Considering the events of her life, she probably thought the boys would eventually end up abusing her and their sister.

Her brother beat his daughter horribly. She was abused by her bio dad. She was sexually abused by her stepdad who ended up as her husband.

I just feel so bad for this girl. Her whole life sucked. She didn't get any help. Now she's probably going to spend the rest of it in prison.
