They teach them now to run and hide but if the assailant has you cornered, you should fight. I think this comes from Virginia Tech where he walked in the classrooms and shot the people hiding one by one.

Watching the video from the recent mall shooting in Washington state is chilling. Those people - his targets - didn't have a chance. It made me think we can plan for these attacks but when faced with a hunter we're helpless.

Speculating -- that the notion that two got out of car- might just be nothing other than eyewitness failure

Omg asking if LE who shot attacker warned him he was going to shoot. Sorry, not even on my list of concerns in the slightest. I'm more concerned about my nails I've been biting than the suspect getting a warning.

ETA: they said officer engaged attacker have come commands that weren't followed and then shot him.

Maybe active shooter is the best alert they had to get students to safety. Like some people would use a fire alarm in a building to get people out quickly if something was going on.

Does anyone know if the professor slashed in the leg, was in a different building -- that would make the fire alarm separate incident moo

That may be the case. I'm still keeping an open mind. The way this situation was handled WRT to news media is just moving my hinky meter a little bit.

I dont remember which one it was, but the guy that pulled the fire alarm was labeled a "hero". I never understood that.

IMO it created more of a danger if a suspect had a gun , now you have everyone in the hallways - think about the consequences of Pulse - so many killed in a small place.

i remeber as it was breaking thinking oh boy now mass shooters are gonna start to pull fire alarms to herd everyone in one easy place to kill as many as possible .

It would easier to kill more if you got everyone in the hallway as opposed to separate classrooms.

This is the first time I heard Buckhead alert? .

Pondering if the swerve was just to get around all the people in the street.

I think it's a "Buckeye Alert", as in Ohio State Buckeyes. University of Michigan students used to call us "The Useless Nuts". All in good fun, I'm sure :)

1 Suspect Dead, 10 in Hospital After Ohio State Car-and-Knife Attack

by Pete Williams, Tom Winter and Tracy Connor

An Ohio State University student plowed into a campus crowd with a car, then jumped out and started stabbing people with a butcher knife before being shot dead by police Monday morning, officials said.

Ten people were taken to hospitals after the ambush, and one was in critical condition. The incident was initially reported as an "active shooter" situation, but the suspect did not shoot anyone.

A police officer was on the scene within a minute and killed the assailant. "He engaged the suspect and eliminated the threat," OSU Police Chief Craig Stone said.

The suspect's name was not released, but law enforcement officials told NBC News he was an 18-year-old Ohio State student, a Somali refugee who was a legal permanent resident of the United States...

I work in state government in a traditionally not well liked agency and we are currently going through several phases of active shooter training. So far ALL of it has included "run, hide, fight." Our agency is blessed to have a fraud unit which includes some HIGHLY trained law enforcement officers who still actively serve in a variety of capacities and who always carry. It's provided a lot of comfort to our staff knowing that in an active "shooter" event - which they've taught us doesn't always equal "shooting," that they are available....and that they've provided us with some training in what to do in such an event. With that being said, they've also taught us that even with all the training in the world you can't prepare for these events, but you can hopefully have at least a somewhat pre-thought out game plan. Are you going to run, if so, where can you run based on where the threat is? Do you need to hide? Where can you hide, and how much protection can your shelter provide? And as a last resort, fight, and fight like hell, you need to be prepared to die, as terrible as that sounds. What objects near you can you grab to fight with? A pointed letter opener can be used as a sharp pointed object to stab someone with, a heavy object to swing and strike someone with. These are horrible thoughts to have to think about, but I'm SO grateful that someone has given us directed guidance about HOW to think about these things because sadly in our society it's becoming necessary!

My heart goes out to Ohio State today.
