I work in state government in a traditionally not well liked agency and we are currently going through several phases of active shooter training. So far ALL of it has included "run, hide, fight." Our agency is blessed to have a fraud unit which includes some HIGHLY trained law enforcement officers who still actively serve in a variety of capacities and who always carry. It's provided a lot of comfort to our staff knowing that in an active "shooter" event - which they've taught us doesn't always equal "shooting," that they are available....and that they've provided us with some training in what to do in such an event. With that being said, they've also taught us that even with all the training in the world you can't prepare for these events, but you can hopefully have at least a somewhat pre-thought out game plan. Are you going to run, if so, where can you run based on where the threat is? Do you need to hide? Where can you hide, and how much protection can your shelter provide? And as a last resort, fight, and fight like hell, you need to be prepared to die, as terrible as that sounds. What objects near you can you grab to fight with? A pointed letter opener can be used as a sharp pointed object to stab someone with, a heavy object to swing and strike someone with. These are horrible thoughts to have to think about, but I'm SO grateful that someone has given us directed guidance about HOW to think about these things because sadly in our society it's becoming necessary!
My heart goes out to Ohio State today.
