Custody dispute played role in killing of Rhoden family, officials say
"John “Ozzy” Osborn, owner of Ozzy’s Barber Shop in Waverly, said the arrests seemed to take the case full circle. The volatile relationship between the Rhodens and Wagners wasn’t exactly a secret.
“Those two families were tight — until they split,” he said." This guy claims that they were friends at one point. I see no reason why he would lie to the reporter.
I do not understand the dislike shown to those who do report on this story. From what I have seen they report on the region in an accurate manner. It may not paint the region in a glowing light, but that does not make it inaccurate.
Most of the reporters who have worked on this story are from local/regional news media. They've all done a very good job. Some of them have big fans and followers here. I have a hard time singling any out, because they've all done exemplary work, especially Chris Graves of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Holly Zacharia at the Columbus Dispatch, Jody Barr, who was at the Fox affiliate in Cincinnati, everyone at the Chillicothe Gazette. No one could ask more of newspapers than the Cinci Enquirer and Columbus Dispatch who went all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court to gain news media access to the final AR's, not for sensationalism, but for the sake of transparency.
WLWT does a great job covering the hearings, etc. and of course our favorite pool video journalist who stands in the corner of the Pike County Courtroom to give us a good view during the pre-trial hearings. He's very professional and seems to know just when and where to move the shot to capture facial expressions, movements, people writing on their trousers, etc. I should try to find out his name.
The regulars/locals have
all been very good and I assume they've been respectful to the families and friends.
At the beginning, there were a lot of national and global journalists covering the story. They did as good a job as they could at the time, given the restrictions placed on them by LE.
For months and years, many following this case tried to get the national news media to come back, do a follow up story, poke into the case to see why it was taking so long to make an arrest. None were interested. Since the arrests have been made, I hope the national news media returns to cover the story in an unbiased, professional manner.
They may want to follow the example of local/regional news media who might explain local customs and help them understand the importance of avoiding stereotypes. The tabloid tv shows may want to consider doing the same.
