Agree. Uninformed media that hasn't done their homework nor understands the case is vulnerable to being played by the defense.

Also, why is Oxygen calling them the "Piketon Family Murders"? The family that was murdered is the Rhoden family, not the "Piketon Family". Yet they managed to get the name and spelling correct of the Wagner family defense attorney.

The media concerns me. It seems that many jurists search the internet but claim otherwise. The first sentence on this thread talks about a pot farm and that is not accurate. There were 5 victims found on properties without a 'farm'.

Is there anyway that this can be changed?

Yes, perhaps we can get that changed in the next thread. Why don't we put together a new "first page" for the thread for the mods to use? Kind of help them out a little. They have a pretty heavy workload.

But yes, I see the news and other media as being either deliberately uninformed about this case or biased against the victims. Really sad. The Ohio news media has done a better job.

That is a fantastic idea!

I have a good guess where this story came from...JMO

Amen! I think this is horrible! Betty, can you please talk to WS to get this story changed to a different one? TIA

Ok, the title seems fine:

OH Pike County: 8 in Rhoden Family Murdered Over Custody Issue 4 Members Wagner Family Arrested#44

"George Wagner III, his wife Angela and their two sons, George IV and Jake, are accused of killing 8 members of the Rhoden family, living in 4 different homes in Pike County, OH. Nearly all the victims were shot at point blank range, while they slept, some with infants and toddlers sleeping nearby.

While first thought to be drug related, Ohio's former Attorney General and current Governor, Mike DeWine says after a full investigation, the killings were the result of Jake Wagner's anger at Hannah Rhoden over custody of their 3 yr old daughter.

Four members of the Wagner family have been arrested on murder and other charges. The grandmothers of Hannah Rhoden's daughters, Rita Jo Newcomb and Fredericka Wagner, have been arrested on charges ranging from forgery to perjury and obstruction of justice.

So many twists and turns and Websleuths members are on top of every single thing that happens in this shocking case.

The gruesome slayings have rattled this southeast corner of Appalachian Ohio, a region that culturally identifies more closely with neighboring Kentucky and West Virginia than the state's northern cities."

I'll add some new links, too. I'm working on a case summary so can add that to some other information.

How's that so far?

6 arrested in Rhoden family murder case

Despite widespread reports that the Rhoden family had been involved in farming and trafficking marijuana, DeWine said he did not believe the drug trade had fomented the murders.

"There was an undercurrent of drugs," he said,. "There’s no evidence of the speculation that this was necessarily drug-related in the sense of the motive."

Reader became visibly upset when asked about the subject.

"We were working an eight-person homicide, not a marijuana program, and I believe today as I did then that they deserve more respect because they are true victims of a heinous crime that’s never been seen before," he said. As for the marijuana: "I would think that, after two years, we could get over that."

Betty,

This is a great idea. The heading on the thread and the description in the first post should reflect the truth. This is about the victims. There are far too many biased articles. There are no crimes or any wrongdoing the victims did to bring this on themselves. The Wagner Six are the only ones that committed crimes. Why on earth are we still discussing pot? I might be wrong, but I don't see it as having any bearing here. The "undercurrent of drugs" could well be the Wagners. They are the ones with shady criminal records. Perhaps one of more was on drugs. In the end, what matters are that the eight victims are stood up for. JMO

It’s the television network known as Oxygen. There is no difference. Their website is Oxygen.com. Hope that helps.
It concerns me that this story will be shown before trials begin, if there are are trials. Mostly, because a lot of people in that area will be watching after 2 years of no arrests. Won't help selecting jury pools which are going to be difficult as is.

Does anyone know yet what's in the show? Obviously, they've already interviewed some defense attorneys.

The autopsy report did not say CRsr was shot first. The medical Examiner does not make claims like that. They just state what they observe.
To all Websleuths that’s been here waiting on more information, I got a question why was Chris Sr the only one that had their remains covered up with a blanket or sheet? The only reason I ask is going back to my theory of the Wagners used Big Chris trailer to hide out in while waiting on Dana to get home, BM made a statement in Hazlitt interview that CRSR was on the floor in his bedroom covered up and GR was laying across his legs, blood was everywhere and there was bloody drag marks that led from front room to bedroom, JMO I believe that one of the Wagners setting close to nurse home and watch her leave, they continue driving behind her until she got home after that they gave the Wagners in Big Chris place the go ahead. JMO but could it be that one of the killers were getting sick looking at Big Chris and or feeling of second thought where kicking in and the other killer covered him up?

It now appears that 40-year-old Christopher Rhoden Sr., the family patriarch, was among the first killed. The reports indicate he was awake when he was confronted by at least one person with a gun. Among the nine gunshot wounds he suffered was an apparent defensive wound to his right forearm that shattered bone. Also, at least one bullet went through a door before hitting him, according to the reports.

Authorities had previously said the family members – who were found in three trailers on the same rural property as well as a camper several miles away – were killed in their sleep the early morning of April 22, 2016

COLUMBUS, Ohio — All of the Pike County massacre victims were shot in the head at point-blank range and seven of the eight were shot multiple times, according to preliminary autopsy reports viewed by the WCPO I-Team Wednesday.

All eight victims - seven Rhoden family members and one's fiancee - were shot with the gun barrel touching their skin or very, very close to it – just centimeters or inches away, the coroner determined.

The number of gunshot wounds ranged from nine (40-year-old Christopher Rhoden Sr. ) to one (44-year-old Kenneth Rhoden) for a total of 32.

A few inconsistencies in the mass killings were pointed out in the reports:

  • Although officials had said all the victims were shot in their sleep, the way his head was tilted indicates that Christopher Rhoden Sr. was shot through a door. He also may have been shot first as his body was the most decomposed when it was discovered by the coroner's office.
  • Larger caliber bullets were used to kill 37-year-old Gary Rhoden.
  • Kenneth Rhoden was shot in his right eye only.
The number of gunshot wounds per victims, according to the reports:

  • Christopher Rhoden, Sr. (age 40): Nine (face, torso, extremities).
  • Dana Rhoden (age 37): Five (head).
  • Hannah Gilley (age 20): Five (head)
  • Christopher Rhoden, Jr. (age 16): Four (head).
  • Clarence “Frankie” Rhoden (age 20): Three (head). Two were “contact wounds” as indicated by soot from the gun on his skull.
  • Gary Rhoden (age 37): Three “contact” wounds (head).
  • Hanna Rhoden (19): Two (head).
  • Kenneth Rhoden (age 44): One (right eye).
Reporters began inspecting the single-page reports Wednesday following an Ohio Supreme Court decision allowing journalists to view the preliminary results. Reporters were not allowed to copy documents or photos or even take notes.

The victims were found shot to death at four homes on the morning of April 22, 2016. Officials have said they believe the shootings took place hours earlier.

Christopher Rhoden Sr. and his ex-wife, Dana Rhoden were parents to Clarence "Frankie", Christopher Jr. and Hanna Rhoden; Hannah Gilley was Frankie's fiancee, and Gary was a Rhoden cousin. Three children in the homes were found unharmed.

Authorities suspect there were multiple attackers who were familiar with the victims' homes and the surrounding area, about 70 miles south of Columbus.

No one has been charged or arrested in one of the state's most notorious crimes.

How do you think they kept in contact? I've thought about this for a while. I'm guessing they would have left their phones at home. Maybe I'm overestimating their intelligence here. Could they have used walkie talkies? Maybe that's something that was purchased on the Amazon account too.
