Knight did not specify the exact purpose of the operation Tuesday in Greeneville, or who the ATF is investigating. Efforts to reach someone at 11-E Auto Sales Wednesday morning were unsuccessful.
The ATF’s 26 Crime Gun Intelligence Centers nationwide “
identify armed violent offenders for investigation and prosecution using crime gun evidence, such as shell casings, in real time,” according to the agency website.
ATF agents in Greeneville Tuesday were from the Knoxville field office, Knight said.
He said that ATF Crime Gun Intelligence Centers “disrupt the shooting cycle by using forensic science and data analysis to identify, investigate and
prosecute shooters and their sources of crime guns.”
The 26 ATF CGICs, “working closely with their local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, provide investigative leads nationwide and support numerous crime gun intelligence initiatives in small- to medium-sized cities,”
