I grew up in Coshocton County and still lived there until a few months ago. I lived about 20 minutes away from where Sam went missing- if I wanted to go to Walmart or the pharmacy or whatever, that's where I would go. I live about an hour away from there now.

About Coshocton and Coshocton County:

There is a small Amish population, the next county over, Holmes, holds the largest Amish settlement in the US. The "City" of Coshocton itself is not large. Think, Walmart, a few fast food restaurants, pharmacies, HS, etc. Not a lot to do. Meth/heroin is a big problem around here, a large amount of residents living under the poverty line. The area where Sam went missing would not be considered in town, but very close. There are quite a few fun and touristy things to do on the outskirts of town- there is a small waterpark, a historical village, and a lot of privately owned ponds and places to go hang out. Lots and lots of windy back roads and land. Lots of hunting and fishing.

Because it's such a small area, there's a lot of activity from my friends and others in the area on Facebook. There are some requests coming from the family or people on behalf of the family and sheriff's department. I am not sure what can and can't be referred to and don't want to break any rules. I believe I can share that they are asking for searchers and giving specific instructions to anyone wanting to search? Hopefully a mod will help me out if that's not ok for me to share.

The Amish wouldn’t follow the news.

The Amish wouldn’t follow the news.
Some do, some don't. I was babysat by newer order Amish families in this area throughout my childhood. You'd be very surprised how much interaction there is between the communities. Most follow local news, fewer closely follow news outside of the area. There's so much interaction between the Amish and English. We work together, go to the same gas stations and stores, even share relatives. Generally they have an idea of what's going on in the neighborhood.

However, IMO it is very highly unlikely they would voluntarily interact with the police unless they had no choice. For example, the whole community (my home town consisted of 8 or 9 Amish families, 2 or 3 English) came and put a new roof on my parent's house when my Mom was dying and the roof started to leak. They didn't give my parents a choice to say no, just gave a date when they'd be there and direction to order pizza for dinner. They are extremely community oriented, but reserved as far as helping on an individual level goes. If you find yourself stranded on the road or needing help on an individual level... generally speaking, they will not be answering their doors. In that way they very much keep to themselves. Law Enforcement, politics, the military- as far as these parts of society go, they generally are very removed.

Again, all my opinion, but these are the people I grew up with.

With that being said after looking further into the exact spot this happened in, and especially after reading more developments regarding this case, I no longer think it's relevant. I'll post a link in a second- more information has come to light.

Friends and family worried about missing teen as video of him involved in fight circulates

From the link:
Mercer shared a video being shared in Coshocton which shows Walters before he disappeared. It showed a fight break out. The phone drops to the ground so the video goes black but the audio continues. Later in the video there was a sound like someone might be choking

But also...

“The information doesn’t lead us to believe he’s deceased,” Rogers said. “He could certainly still be with us.”

15-year-old Samuel J. Walters search sees community come together

More Updates:
Coshocton County Sheriff Tim Rogers said a fisherman who was at the lake came forward late Wednesday. His accounts matched statements from two other individuals who were with Walters shortly before his disappearance. The teen was last seen entering a wooded area by the pond alone, Rogers said. He asks that public efforts be organized and for people to respect private property owners and farm crops as they search.

Stone said searching of the pond and other nearby waters are also continuing, but he feels confident in how well the water has been covered by boats and divers.

Dusty Wilkin, Walters’ uncle, has been working with law enforcement and acting as a liaison between officials and the family. He said it’s been a trying time and emotions of the family has gone up and down as information has been uncovered. Wilkin said statements from the fisherman were seen as positive as it means Walters wasn’t taken by someone at the scene.

So there was an altercation on tape... choking noises heard. But the altercation may actually have nothing to do with Sam's disappearance. This is such a weird one. I hope they find him soon.

I haven’t read all of the links, did they release the video of the fight? I wonder how many people were involved and when it occurred. Definitely interested in knowing if there was any connection to his death. Also wonder what the manner of death is?

This is deeply saddening. So young.

My heart goes out to Samuel's family.

May they continue to hold one another close during their grief.

There has been no update on this case from LE since August, nothing about COD or manner of death in msm, so I'm assuming LE did not start a criminal investigation and his death was ruled accidental.

RIP Samuel.
